Replacing AC Compressor - Help

I am attempting to replace my AC compressor in my 01 VX. I purchased a used 2002 Trooper Compressor as instructed by someone here on the forum.

If anyone has replaced this themselves please chime in a let me know exactly what im going to have to remove in order to get this beast out of the belly of the VX and swapped out. At first I thought I could unbolt it and slide it "somehow" out of the bottom but I cant access the bolts very well and im not sure that's happening without removing the power steering and possibly much more.

i had mone done professionally but my mechanic said it wasnt that hard to get to and he didnt have to remove anything else - the system has to be charged anywys when you take it off so unless you have that equipment i suggest just bringing it to a reputable a/c and having them do it - wither way its a good thing you got the correct one beforehand as they will never be able to find the right one in the parts books

The compressor comes out fairly easily and the mounting bolts are a pain to access but all accessible from the wheel well/under body. I had a little trouble dropping the compressor because the steering link was in the way. I ended up removing the fan and pulling the compressor through the top.

Overall it's a straight forward install that can be finished in a few hrs.

As it turns out the 02 Trooper AC Compressor from eBay is not a match from mine. Its almost the same but the Refrigerant Line Connector hole is angled horizontal and mine is facing upwards...

I have the front right wheel off and I am able to see it more clearly now. I have 3 bolts left and they are proving to be very difficult to remove. I had the system evacuated already and was going to refill when I replaced the AC. I guess when and if I do get the compressor off I will try and get the bearings replaced in the clutch and return the one from eBay. I have no idea how im going to unscrew the bolts that are left, the steering link is in the way.

I finally got it out but I confirmed that that the compressor ordered from ebay was not compatible. The Refrigerant Line Connector hole is angled differently and the hole is too large. Im going to post pictures of mine and the one that I ordered.

Close but no cigar ordering the right one tomorrow, will keep everyone posted with a simple guide. I was able to pull it through the bottom without having to remove anything. In order to remove one of the bolts that was blocked by the steering link I had to cut a 12mm wrench in half in order to get the darn nut off.

Maybe the different A/C compressor on 2001 models is a myth...

you will need to replace the receiver dryer once you open it up to the air. I would recommend having it vacuumed to a negative pressure for a day changing the dryer then charging. Of course if it won't hold a vacuum then you most likely have a leak.

I have ordered a replacement bearing for my compressor as I was able to open the clutch, after purchasing some tools that a kind man at the auto part store said I could return after competing the job. It should be here on Tuesday and will report back on the happenings.

I already purchased a receiver drier along with replacement o-rings. Thanks for posting the bulletin!

i think izuzu just used whatever was sitting around the factory all 3 years - at least we know its one of the two - you can tell for sure from the tag on your hood or on the compressor itself which one you need for sure

hi, is it possible to remove clutch and bearing right from vehicle ?? thats what i am trying to do, but those(loan tools) seams like doesnt fit 01 model.
ii got my own bolts to fit clutch plate, but still something holding it... Any suggestions ? thank you

i got bad bearing, ,,, what did you use to remove clutch? did u puled it out with 3 bolts and one on middle?
also is there a snap ring needed to be removed to pul pulley ??? thanks for your help ... i regret the day i bbought VX too :-) , it was all good when it was new, now its like falling a part, one part at a time... i got temp replacement- Explorer 94 with 200k miles,, guess what?? no problem and easy to access any bolts

Reactivating this thread because I need the same answer as the last post.

Can the compressor's clutch/pulley be removed with the compressor still mounted to the engine?

If not, do I HAVE to remove the lines, or am I just screwed all the way around and have to pull the compressor completely out?

It's probably easier to install rather than find. Tons of them are on ebay but they will list just any part with any car to make the sale.

Hmmm, I pulled mine out of the wheel well, no problems or special tools needed. It was tight, but it fit, didn't even take the wheel off, and mine definitely came off of an 02 trooper. It was a tiny bit longer(fore to aft), but no problems with fit.

Ugh, I am going to have to replace mine sooner or later, doesn't like it when I am idle...

My pulley just started to seize. I need to replace the lower PS hose anyway, so I'm going to bite the bullet and have someone do it for me. More later.
