Tips on oiling a Green filter

Need to clean my Green air filter for the first time. Reason I'm asking...... Dave's K&N in his FJ has their oil in an aerosol can, sprays on nicely.

Had a Toyota TRD air filter in the 4Runner, that kit has a bottle of liquid oil, with no dispenser, you just drizzle onto the clean filter...made a real mess as there's not really any good control for amount applied and ended up soaking through and dripping a bit....just replaced it with an Amsoil dry nanofiber one, anybody want to buy it?, only used for about 6 months....

So that takes me back to the Green filter in the VX.....Two questions...

1) it's been in for 8 months and has minimal dirt showing on about 30% of it...I would have expected much more, especially with all my dusty dirt roads?:_thinking Tone's old post says it filters down to 5 microns though, and breathes better than a K&N. Does the minimal dirt seem odd or OK to you?

2) The Green cleaning kit has oil in a pump aerosol bottle, looks like it should apply evenly. Any tips?

I searched old posts and How To's and didn't find anything on this.

As a general rule of thumb...:_thinking

After cleaning & completely drying an oiled gauze type filter, I saturate the element with new oil, then lean it against something, so that it can drain, with many multiple layers of paper towels under it to absorb the excess oil. Another option is a bread pan, so you can save the exce$$ oil.
After about 1/2 hour, wipe the rest of the excess from around the perimeter & blot just a bit more off the filter area & install.

Since the stock airbox flows from the bottom up, excess oiling may be less of an issue, & even if you over-do it...the MAF is easy to clean...:smilewink

Good luck Sue with the green filter, mine the rubber dissentegrated....when I called to get it covered under warranty they said that Green at the time mine was made was making them overseas, now that they are making them here in the US they do not make them for the VX any longer. I had to go back to K&N after using Green since maybe 2004. I did like Green better than K&N but have no choice now. So be warned about the rubber....

I still dont like the sound of using a oiled filter, as for wouldnt some of the oil possibly fly down the intake into the maf sensor and make it give weird readings?

I agree Sprey but it would be dependent on how much oil you spray on it (K&N style) or how much you let it drain as Ldub mentioned.

yeah that's why I really didn't like the TRD one which ended up with so much excess oil. I'd definitely add some kind of sprayer if I did it again.

Yes, Sprey, there's much documented debate about whether the oil can foul the MAF sensor. I think I even recall seeing a video on K&N's site to disprove that assertion. But many have also said if that does happen, it's pretty easy to clean the sensor.

Even so, once I saw the nano technology dry air filter from Amsoil, and that it's used by the military in the Abrahms tank, I decided it was the one for us. Sounds like the sales guy has me hypnotized I guess. :laugho:

Too bad they don't make one to fit the VX....so I'll stick with the Green filter for the VX until either the rubber seals rot away (thanks Lisa) or something better and easier comes along.

Did you have them check to see if they're available for a Trooper or Rodeo of the same vintage?(99-01)
I'm pretty sure they use the same air box...:naughty:

doh, no I didn't think of it (what a surprise). What year(s) specifically should I check? I know I've seen the years mentioned here but I didn't commit them to memory. :thanx:

Don't know what years for certain, but I would think 97-01 would be close.

You could try snooping some air filter/parts websites to do a cross reference on part #'s...:naughty:
Even the hard copy at your local wall-mt would provide that info...:smilewink

Now for the bad news...

When I go to the Amsoil site, they don't have their nano filter available for any of those models...:upsetgray

I even tried to cross ref it with the K&N #, & still got nada, just a reco for a wix filter...:_confused

Wow, big thanks Dub for all that research....glad it helped ya pass the time last night. I had my fingers crossed for the Amsoil, but oh well. Guess I'll stick with the Green until it falls apart (course Lisa your TX heat could have been a big factor in that I think).

Still wonderin' where's all the dust from my dirt road? :_thinking
