Not customer made, I don't believe in reinventing the wheel. Did research and noticed that the 98-2004 Rodeo tail lights have similar shape (the contour is defintely different though). So bought a pair, made brackets, and there you have it

Thanks Lisa, can't wait for you to see it in person. Sunroof was an unpublicized mod but is probaby the 2nd most useful mod after the SC. You ain't seen nothing yet... I've got the hood scoop coming and other mods on the way :)

Thanks guys! I would love to help you guys out but it was really time consuming and I would have to make the brackets "perfect" on every set. The reason is due to the tight clearance between the rear door and the tail lights. Secondly, additional steel tabs had to be welded to the tail light guards at the correct angle so that the rear door won't hit them. The tabs are used to mount the "aluminum" brackets to the "steel" guards.
I'm just in it for the love so let me show Tone what I've done and perhaps he can commercialize it so you guys can enjoy it as well.

Hey, that would be great. I'm sure even a custom set wouldn't be too difficult for someone with the right skills to fabricate, and I'm sure there are a lot of other VXers out there like me who have always wanted this mod...
Thanks for sharing your idea. ;Db;

Note sure if Julian911 is still out there. Was hoping to get some close ups on the tabs and mounting to the interior door.
They look so sharp and I always thought that the rear of the VX has been lacking in mods compared to the front.

[Doug,
Sorry for the late reply. I I will snap some pics and you will know exactly what I'm talking about.
Julian
Your PM account is full and I don't have your email address....
Sounds good, everyone is running around with the holidays.
I really appreciate the pics. Always thought the VX needed taillight guards. I have tube everywhere else, and it just looks strange.
Any closeups of mounting areas, and inside the door, etc., would really help in trying to duplicate your creation.
Anyway, once again, really appreciate the effort on your part.

Julian911: finally got around to taking my Amigo tail light guards over to the local weld shop and get them to add pieces of stock to them in three places. I then (as you aptly described-PAINFULLY) bent them to fit in-between the edges of the door, and under the cladding bolt in the front. Still need to tweak a little. I would never do this for someone else. A total PITA.
For me they really compliment the wraparound merc guard on my front and the Rage motorsports cargo rack on the roof. I know the "tube-heavy" look isn't for everyone, but it is the overall look I am going for with my VX. After I return from deployment I want to get some black rims and aggressive tires, and a satin paint job. I am hoping prior to leaving I can Gatorback the cladding. We'll see if that pans out.
I will add photos when I can take em in the light.

Nice work. I like them but IMO they could be a little closer to the tail lights... and they would be absolutely perfect if you could round the inner sharp edges.

01/09/2012, 04:22 PM
Thanks, gotta hand it to Julian for the concept. I agree on the sharp edges, but don't have a bender. I ended up doing all the bending of the brackets with C clamps, a hammer, and the edge of the sidewalk.
I could probably do better if I had professional tools or even a table mounted vise-then again, I'd probably spend way too much time working on the VX if I did.
As far as distance, I kept em a little farther from the vehicle, to match the big guard on my front--I guess that was matter of preference - and function when offroading.

Julian said his were from a Rodeo, wekilled used AMigo. I pm'd Doug yesterday to get some more details, and he thinks they're the same so either can be used....I'm also thinking of ordering the plastic ones and just seeing how they look...although the high gloss isn't attractive...but wecould at least test fit them and return if I don't like them.

My bad. I went back to look at my ebay purchase history, and they were actually Rodeo.
I don't think it would matter however as you are chopping the brackets off and the rear ends have always been identical minus the spare mount. Same with tail light shape. I had an Amigo before my VX). (BTW, the way they attached to the Rodeo was really cheesy. a 3M adhesive tab and screws through the guards and into the existing screws on the lens, rather than attaching at the body.

Will:
Sorry man, two issues:
- I am way deep in middle of masters thesis right now. (took a quick break)
- Second issue is everyone's body panels are lined up slightly different from each other, and even if I fabbed them, they might rub someplace. Mine aren't even a 100% success. I still want to tweak them a little as they touch ever so slightly on the drivers side. Also a little off as they both tilt maybe an 1/8 inch outward too much. The way I did it you need to drill a second set of holes in your VX lights on the black lip and since I don't have your VX...
It takes patience, but if you measure it can be done. With few exceptions I just copied Julian911 thread anyway. That and keep a look out on ebay for guards. I know that if you can find a welder like I did the rest can be done with a hammer, visegrips, and lots of swearing.

With high shipping prices back and forth, you may want to check with a local shop to see if they could weld some bracket for you. Just something to consider if shipping is expensive.

Pretty hard to find black powdercoat steel tail light guards for Rodeo/Passport readily....
so.....These two are the polished stainless steel tail light guards at pretty good prices...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-PASSPORT-ISUZU-RODEO-TAILLIGHT-GUARDS-TAIL-LIGHT-GUARDS-/350516916189?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item519c6fafdd#ht_3330wt_993

1) was wondering ballpark how much it would cost to get them powdercoated??
2) Would the powdercoat be as durable as if it came from the manufacturer powdercoated?
Would it be more likely to chip since it's aftermarket?
Or can a good shop do these polished ones really nice?
3) I did find some Aries brand black guards, but they seem to be on a back order so I'm not real optimistic they'll actually arrive.
4) Westin, SteelCraft, Romik, Polar Bear, don't seem to be available any longer and Manik has gone out of biz. So I'm hoping the Aries ones are actually still available.
5) I've set up several std ebay searches for all these.
maxprime
01/17/2012, 01:48 AM
To powder coat them should cost around $35-40 for the set.
As far as chip resistance, all powder coating is applied thru magnetism to bond to the metal and baked to harden the coating and will be no difference between factory and aftermarket.
hope that helps, Kat
Also, I am thinking about making a set for my two VX's since I haven't found any that fit like a glove.

I thought the Jackaroo was our Trooper (box-y isuzu) and the Frontera was our Rodeo.
We are both right -
The early Jackaroo's were box shaped and same as your Trooper. At that stage we also had the Frontera from Spain, and the MU as a grey import.
Then the later Jackeroo's were the same as your Rodeos. The Frontera's were discontinued in Australia about the same time.
Our "Rodeos" are utes, or pick-ups in 'merican lingo.

STRIKE ONE.....
Thought I'd try to easiest route with these plastic stick on guards so Jon didn't have to get all mixed up in metal and welding......:smack::smack:
These VTech Tuff plastic ones have a 90 degree angle to them, but our lens are more like 110-120 degrees, so you can see the big space in between. I put a screwdriver in between to show the distance.
Is this a job for a heat gun???
Heat them enough so the angle can be relaxed a bit and fit the contour? I'm afraid I'd really deform them if I tried it however.....

If the plastic doesn't feel like it has any flex, I wouldn't heat it. It looks like plastic that will melt rather than bend.

It just depends if you're willing to risk your $36. As soon as you hit it with the heat gun, you won't be able to return them.
My suggestion would be to stick them in the oven at about 250 deg for 10 minutes. When you pull them out, you'll be able to tell if the plastic will be soft enough to 'adjust' without cracking or deforming the hollow bars.
It looks to me that unfortunately the way that they are molded, the bars will deform (sorta like trying to bend a metal channel - when you bend it, one of the sides will start collapsing).
BLUF: I'm sure it can be done ... just not sure how difficult it will be.

Doug- did you modify the curvature of the horizontal bars at all? Yours look like they're about 90 degrees, basically about the same as the plastic ones I just tried.

I read that over several times, and just wasn't sure if he was talking about the horizontal metal bars or the BRACKETS .....His horizontal bars do not look scuffed or imperfect in any way...and I just didn't think that was possible given his, um...technique.. :laugho:.....plus they ARE STILL at about a 90 degree angle....and I think they came that way...so I think he was talking about rearranging the brackets.

Tomorrow, the 21st, is the day! I'll be collecting my VX in Melbourne. It's coming of the boat from Tasmania overnight, and will be at the port at 6:00am. i'm counting the minutes. I'm so excited that i've been buying stuff to modify it even before i've seen it in person. Bought roof rack/box + a pair of fog/driving lights, and will make the black fins become shiny.

For us dummies on the udder side...what are the "fins" you're talking about?? :_thinking
Also, just curious, do you have the factory OEM CROSS BARS that go side to side, that the silver basket gets attached to? I didn't see them in the pictures.
The silver cargo basket looks like a rebadged "Thule" brand...called the "Xpedition 696" over here......do you know if it is?
It's been discontinued over here, are any more of those available where you got it?
There's several owners over here that would be interested in getting that same basket.
Good luck trying to sleep the next 2 days!!!!! :laugho::laugho::laugho: :thumbup::thumbup:

Dear VXKAT, here's where i got the roof racks, Powerfull 4x4 brand around here, looks like a replica, but t's very well made, took me 2 hours to put together, comes with the cross bars in black, you can see one attached at the back:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Heavy-Duty-Aluminium-Alloy-roof-Cage-1270-x-965mm-Small-/290571762614?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43a76d3bb6
Pretty cheap, but all the way here in Australia... They have 3 sizes for sale, and i bet if you buy in bulk they would ship to you, they come disassembled.
I'll attach the other one once i have the car in my garage, will do some measurements before attaching to the car. The fins i was talking about are those on the front grille that looks like teeth, mine are black, i want silver or shiny.
Here it's 2:40pm, friday, half day ahead of you already, i'll go early to bed to catch the train to Melbourne at 4 in the morning and drive back :)
Please let me know if you need any help buying the racks, i can be your contact here.
Finally, i miss USA so much, lived in Martha's Vineyard, MA for 3 years, and i'll never forget the amazing time i had over there.

Came back up for air (back to schoolwork tomorrow). I didn't mess with the curvature of the guards themselves (no pipe bender avail-or anything besides simple power tools and sidewalk, which is like cowbell, you can never have too much) All I did was use a Dremel to shorten the tubing you see in the pic--figured it would be a useful spot to mount stuff later --the pic you had with the CB antenna mount (BINGO, I LOVE the antenna mount). I then had the weld shop take three pieces of flat steel and weld it at a 45degree angle on the inside of the guard. Then vise grips, crescent wrench and some educated guesswork and just bent them to fit. One reason I have them so far from the tail light is the mismatch same as the plastic ones on the angles, it doesn't look as odd when they are further out (and they match the distance on my Mercedes grilleguard anyway)

What tubing did you Dremel and shorten?? The thin horizontal ones?
Are the thin bars/tubing now disconnected from the thicker vertical tubing?

Also, these stainless ones on ebay don't seem to have the correct shape...I don't see any slope on the upper, outer edge that would follow the curve of the top half of our tail lens shape . They actually look quite square to me....I can't get the picture to show in this post though.

Kat: The stainless ones are for an older model Amigo, so don't get those ones. You need the teardrop shape above for a newer Amigo. The tubing I was referring to was the two hollow ones (one horizontal on top of the other) that I shortened but left on for future undetermined use. I didn't cut any of the thick guard tubing nor the thin horizontal pieces. Those are both intact. I will keep an eye out on ebay for the right guards if I see any.

Dear Kat, I spent my half Saturday and whole Sunday drooling and doing things on the car. The fangs are shiny now ( not fins as I said before, hehehe!) and the roof cage is up. But I think they sit way too high on the car, I'll go to my mate's house next Tuesday or Wednesday to have it cut and shortened as low as possible, at least 3/12 inches. I took pics with my cel phone but once I lower the roof cage I'll take decent pictures to post. Amazing car to own and drive!

Just woke up!
The previous owner had all these stickers on the car, i'm removing them, looks too busy. And he had an old scoop (not functional) on the bonnet.
removed the scoop and the bonnet is faded, so i bought this one to replace the old one, so it desguises where the previous one was, until i can afford to respray the whole bonnet... There's a black sticker on the bonnet, to cover some glue left when i peeled a piece of rubber that the other owner had also stuck on the bonnet... For the fangs, i bought this heavy duty sticker from ebay uk and cut in that shape (sorry for my english...)
This car is like a little war tank, so cool, can't get over it!

Got scared for a sec. The pic doesn't match the year/model. Once you get them you might have to really sand them or etch them and put some primer to get the black to stick (unless you are going with chrome tube) There are agents you can spray on inbetween the stainless and paint that will help adhere the paint.
I think you are going to be much happier with the metal ones.

Sorry for the T/J but I couldn't resist. What does the forward facing pipe just to the right of the front license plate do? Are the passenger side hood vents real? What is the silver post on the driver's side of the hood insert? What do the antenna and black circular thingy on the front of the roof do?

Hello Maverick and Kat, that license plate support with the driving lights are pretty much standard here in Australia, i saw at repco, Autobarn and Supercheap Auto shops and they might cost 20 bucks, i can go have a look if you wish :) Everything else you see on the car is there for show, the previous owner stuck scoops, stickers, antenas, those 3 rubber pieces that look like vents, i tried to remove but it leaves marks on the paint, so i decided to leave them there for the moment. I just spent 3 hours lowering the roof racks, and now they sit really close to the roof, making the car look much better! Very happy with the final result. Those stickers with the dates on are showing the date the previous owner bought the car. I have a chip on my windscreen, and there's no replacement in Australia :( I can order one made, but would cost me $640 and takes 6 weeks to be made. I might buy one and leave in my garage for when i have to replace it one day, they'll just get harder and harder to find. I'll post a photo of the lowered roof rack, those 2 whistles that you see above my license plate between the driving lights are to scare kangaroos off the roads, like dogs, that whistle sounds in a frequency that only they can hear, and they don't like it.

MAKING PROGRESS....KINDA....
Here's sample #2....Stainless Steel tail light guards ....
I can't see a brand name anywhere.
First off...these are a very substantial hunk of metal.and are really nice!
Ironically the least expensive of all the ones I saw.
$50 on ebay +$5 shipping.
These appear to have the same 90 angle as the plastic ones.
I'd prefer a more flush fit , so these would have to be "widened" IMHO.
BUT, if we spread them, the 2 vertical edges aren't going to lay flat on the lens, they'd need bent inward....:_brickwal
NOTE- the style is different than most...instead of tubular shape, these are a flat metal, both the frame and the bars are flat, not tubular.
I prefer the round tubing, but if this is all I can find, I'll stick with these, if I can get them shaped a little better and tabs welded on..
If anybody has round tubing and wants to trade/sell....let me know.
If we can work out the fitment, then I'll get them powdercoated.
IDEAS???? SUGGESTIONS????
1) See if my 4x4/mechanic shop would be able to bend these. I know they can do the welding part.
2) Hubby's Uncle and cousins own a Heating.Cooling biz in Scottsdale..they bend tons of duct work.....could ask if they have some machine to spread and bend these.
3) Do exactly as "wekilled" did, leave the curvature alone, mount them a little farther away from the lens.
4) Go back to the plastic ones, find somebody to reshape those with a heat gun.

Did you guys consider buying the CF/black plastic (or maybe they're fiberglass?) covers from Summit Racing and have a fabricator use those as a template? Not pricey and he would destroy the plastic in making the mold, but sure seems like it would result in a much higher quality product.

If its just for looks you can just use brake hard line and a bender (they are dirt cheap). Have someone tack them together with a welder add mounting tabs and paint any color your heart desires. Yeah, I know they're "mostly" cosmetic,...have ya seen my front/rear skids? :laugho:....But we've gotten into some pretty thick brush and chaparral around here where the branches are just at the right level of the tail lights, and drag along them (and the sides :goof:)...which is why I have to buff the heck out of my paint with the Griot's stuff!
But I've always liked the look and have had them on almost every SUV I've had in the past 15+ yrs.........I even put some type of cheap black pinstripes on my '84 CRX tail lights! That's why I'm so gung ho to finally get them for the VX.
I haven't called the fabricator guy yet, but I will soon.
Simple you say????...simple for you, but not for me....;)
I'll get there....eventually.....and no, not purple....even I have boundaries I won't cross ;)

Sue, i really admire your perseverance, you'll get there! That Westin and Manik model appear to be almost the right shape, we just don't know the size, I think if those 2 have approx. the same size as the tailight, it won't be hard to bend them a little and respray with matte black or powdercoat. Your efforts are amazing, and if you find a model that fits well, i'll buy one too, and have it adapted to mine, i think its a great idea, since its so hard to find parts, this would be an extra protection, and looks really good in my opinion, keep up the good work!
these Tacoma have a good shape:

Sue,
I can talk to Welder Guy about making them. It probably won't be high on his priority list for a while though so the wait time will probably make it a no-go for you.
I'm guessing that what you would prefer would be 1/2 inch thick wall tubing to go around the tail light and 1/4 solid cross bars. Thoughts?
It would help if someone has a busted tail light that I can loan him till the first set is done. Anyone have one?

Thanks Tom & gizmo....I don't want to cut in line on the other things WelderGuy is making.
I have a few more vehicles I've found that have a similar shape..what I'm going to do now is get measurements.....I'm going to have to go to a parking lot with my tape measure....:goof: since I'm not having any luck with sellers responding with measurements, or they're inventory is not on site.
This may take a while, but I'm going to keep at it
If anybody has any of these trucks, or has access to one, PLEASE let me know tail light meausrements. :thanx:
Possibilities:
1) 2005- 2008 Toyota Tacoma
2) 2004 -2007 Dodge Durango
3) 1998 -2003 - Dodge Dakota (not SLT)
4) 2004 GMC Envoy/Chevy Trailblazer
5) 2005 -2007 FORD F-150 STYLESIDE/FLAIRSIDE-turned upside down ...yes, upside down since a welder is going to fab tabs anyway....

KAT - Mebbe I can move it quicker if I prototype it in copper tubing (which I can work with) and then just hand it off to Ron to fab in stronger material and weld on tabs.

No...I bought these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/350516916189?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
I don't think those would work cuz the years are '98-'02 for the Rodeo/Holden. I realize this listing says it fits '03 and '04 also, but from everything I've read, they changed in '03, so these wouldn't/shouldn't fit.
I'm still discussing options with 2 different fabricators.
1) One option is to take these S.S ones I have, bend them open more, weld on and shape the tabs, then powdercoat them.
2) The other option is to build the tubular style from the ground up, then powdercoat.
I'll be talking to one fab guy this weekend. I've sent him pics and we're going to discuss it all.
And yes, I'll get a price for him to do additional sets of each type.
TBC....stay tuned....

I just got my package from Isuzu factory in China, i bought the Isuzu emblem + roof lights from the F series trucks through Alibaba.com 18 bucks for all parts, but shipping was killing 50 bucks through UPS but arrived in 4 days! My rear emblem was a black sticker, and i have trouble backing up at dark, so the lights are functional, attaching them to the spoiler doesn't damage the car, just used some silicone sealand and 4 "self threading" (is that what they are called?) screws.
They are black and are hardly noticed, so i'm happy with the final result.

MAKING PROGRESS ON CUSTOM MADE TAIL LIGHT GUARDS!
Took the pics of Doug's installed tail guards to the off-road fab shop today.
1) Discussed details to fab a replica of the Rodeo guard and create 3 tabs for mounting, with appropriate shape/angle so it clears back door. Will be round/tubular style, with 4 horizontal bars within the frame. Made from mild steel. Can get them powder-coated black locally.
2) Also requested he try to re-shape the stainless steel set I got on ebay, with the flat metal design and basically find a way to make these work. I want these to be really close to the lens, so we'll see what he can do.
He has time next week, so he'll call me to set up firm appt. and I'll leave my VX for the day.

any special instructions or cautions for accessing it??? These guys have never seen a VX in person (there's a surprise! :rollo:)...so they won't know the ins/outs of our how to remove the rear fender cladding.

Prolly don't need to remove it completely, just do like we did (when we installed your hitch) & remove the torx screws in that area, & gently pry the cladding away so they can loca fastening points.

Still need to do a little tweaking when I have more time, but the tailgate opens fine, just want them to be perfect. Anyway, thanks Julian911 for the idea.
*** NEED SOME INPUT!***
Fab shop got the passenger side guard no problem, BUT the rear gate comes within about 1/8" of the Driver's side lens when open, and the metal tabs would rub the carp on the metal.
Doug or Julian or anybody - DID YOU ADJUST THE DOOR, or how did you get the rear door to clear the tabs?? Thinner metal? More offset than Pass side?

You still need pics??
yeah, pics would still be helpful.
I'm actually "trying" to get 3 different sets made:
1) CUSTOM, from scratch-
we're deciding if we want to bring the tabs out any further than in the pass side pic. Thinking of welding the frame right there to the tabs, instead of an L or Z shaped tab. This way the guard will be a little more flush with the plastic lens (which was my request). They removed the tail light assembly, made some adjustments to move it to the left a little, and sanded down the inner vertical edge of the plastic lens a small bit...so we're making progress
2) Manik guards I got last week (tubular style like yours).
Have the same shape/pointy corner as yours on the top and bottom of the vertical bar. Looks like those corners will catch the rear door when opened. We felt they could grind down both corners a bit, weld corner back together if we need to really grind it down pretty far into that welded joint.
Did you offset yours a little to the left to avoid that corner, or was it solved simply by ?
Also they've cut the tabs off the Manik ones, and as soon as we decide on what style tab, they'll weld it on these.
3) Stainless steel FLAT style metal.
I haven't given up yet on these. One idea was to make a cut vertically at the junction of the 90 degree curve, then get them at the right curvature and weld a piece back in where the small section was removed, grind it down into the flat shape. Then try to bend the outer tube frame to match the new curvature.....or cutting out a piece of outer frame if necessary.

Wohoo! got the custom tail light guards finished, powder-coated, and installed. :dan_ban:
Theyre very robust to say the least. They used thicker steel for the tabs than Manik or the SS ones, so they're really solid.
They did manage to get the driver's side tabs to clear the rear door....by about a whisker! One pic below I have a toothpick stuck in the gap, that's as far as I could get it.
Going to hold off modding the black Manik and stainless steel ones. Turns out it's pretty difficult to get the chrome-plate off...and I can't afford another custom job right now, so these are both on hold. The shop did make a few extra tabs, so they'll have them on hand if more are to be made.
Here's the custom ones in RAW METAL, and then POWDER-COATED:in a black 50% gloss. I requested they design them to fit more flush to the lens like this.

Well, now we know what cladding that has ShowRoom New dye looks like when a sander/grinder hits it.....
I don't actually know what caused it since they shaved/sanded the inner vertical part of lens...and only on driver's side. Maybe a tool rubbing on it...I don't know....but the place has a shop full of sandrails, VW dune buggies, and everything in between, and they're all pretty rough looking.....no beauty queens or Pebble Beach entrants there....so a fine specimen like mine apparently isn't their specialty....:goof:
