Thinking about getting one?

Allow me to take the soap box....

We played a few games here at work yesterday in our art lounge. Mind you, only the best for our gaming experience. 60" plasma screen with complete surround sound system. Now, we have stared at Oblivion on this screen for a long, long time, but now we had to see what else was out there.

What we played:
Madden
NFS
Condemned
Kameo

There may have been some others that I wasnt around for, but these are the ones I checked out. Basically, WOW. Condemned is probably the only title there that I would actually be interested in, but after seeing the other titles, I am sold. For one, football never looked so !@#$ing good. Car racing, never so jaw dropping. And little fairy chicks hopping around kicking arse.... well, I dunno, it looked.... cool? Hehe! But ya, if you ever wanted to get a new tv for the 360, it looks like an big fat years worth of savings should go there and another years worth to a surround sound system.

The games and the 360 are definately gonna push the gaming world into a new gaming era. I am VERY excited and want my 360 NOW. Hopefully, Oblivion will be there soon to play a major part in this gaming revolution.

Very exciting stuff is about to happen....

the screenshot from PGR3 looked so real that the reviewing magazine accused the studio of cheating by releasing FMV footage as in-game experince.

Then they released the wireframes and said... "ha ha ha suck it"

well not really, but you get the idea.

I am thinking about it... but, I have an old 32" TV and my surround sound sub woofer just went up. Really need to replace and upgrade the whole system.

The Xbox360 isn't so bad... it's the peripherals - like TV and sound.

My question is, and not sure if anyone has looked at this yet, but how crappy does it look on a normal TV? I would swing the 360 now and upgrade the TV later when I get some additional cash.

didnt the normal Xbox support HDTV also? i think i read somewhere most the companies didnt make any games which were in HD.

I played Call of Duty 2 the other day on a decent size plasma display, it looks very very nice.

Though I'm still going to wait until next year when the price will be lowered. Still have to finish doom 3 and half life 2...

More units were released at CircuitCity.com today at 2pm, but I think they are gone now.

In all honesty, we have our QA dept here testing our game with the 360 on regular analog tvs. No bells and whistles. It doesnt look horrible, but it doesnt look great either. Its no worse than what the Xbox looks like on a regualr tv anyways. It's all in the pretty tricks we developers put into the game that sets it apart from the XBox anyways. ;)

On an HDTV/plasma though, you get bumped to 1080i and it's simply awesome. The XBox has an aftermarket component cable that you can use unstead of the RCA cable it ships with, but there are only a handful of game that are offered in 720-1080. I have yet to see a game on the 360 that isnt offered in 1080i though.

I "should" have my 360 by next Mon or Tues since developers were given an opportunity to get them directly from MS for a much cheaper price. We will see if they actually get here though. Knowing MS, we wont have them until Easter '06.

I'm actually holding out for the Playstation3. I believe it will be a better system, cell processor, 50GB blu-ray discs, HDMi outputs, I own about 50 PS2 games, etc.

The 360 is definatley impressive, I've played CoD2 and it looks great. I think it may have been rushed to market, but I guess we'll see. I did read a bit the other day about M$ pumping false shortage to increase interest/demand, I figure it's cause they already know it will be an outdone 'old' system sometime next year. Not a long life for a console...

Regardless, I wouldn't buy either till I upgrade my television. I've got my eye on a DLp. But like ISCE said, it's the peripherals that you have to worry about.

What do I think?

I think the PS3 is still a long ways away, so for now, The 360 will be the best, heh.

Seriously, Sony hasnt even sent us development kits, so I REALLY dont think they even know what they box will do. You can read this and that on the internet all you want, but until the actual developers get kits in, the hardware is only speculation. I do look forward to working with the PS3 though. I am a huge Sony fan and I hope they can stay on top of their empire in the industry.

Nintendo Revolution however.... what can I say. With that stupid as all hell controller gig they are going with, they may as well just give up and start making fishing rods.

I have read quite a few articles about the Xbox 360, but not one answered my only question... will the new system play "old" Xbox games? Every article talked about the improved graphics (no duh, what a shocker... a new system is better than the previous version!!!), etc. and raved about it, and then failed to mention wether or not my $1500 worth of games would even work on the damn thing... brilliant! Even the Xbox 360 website is useless... unless you want to watch a green glowing dot circle endlessly. Retards. The reason I got a PS2 was it would play all the older titles too. The only reason I got an Xbox in the first place was because I won it from Taco Hell. However, it is a great system & hooked me on Halo. Oh, well (unless one of you know the facts) I guess it'll remain a mystery.

The $400 model WILL DEFINITELY play old XBOX games in fact the 360 has hardware (or software?) built in that will immediately increased the graphics of old XBOX games. This has already been tested by www.ign.com on Halo 2 and they did a write up on it and said pretty much the edges of all objects are more defined and clear, and ok say you are looking at a flat rock wall the 360 will automatically make depth to the wall giving it "edges". How this really looks is yet to be seen by me, but as the testers said the effects are minimal but noticable. But yes the more expensive $400 model will be reverse compatible. Hope that helps.

both of these previous post are only partially true.

only about two hundred games are compatable at launch.

its like this, xbox uses a completely diff gpu than x360 so you have to emulate the older games, this is where the hard drive (included in the $400 model) and xbox love come into play. you insert disc xbox live checks for emulator, if its available it downloads and saves to hard drive. if not tough luck and you gotta wait, they are gonna add more and more as time goes on but not all games will be compatable. this is the list of games that will work at launch IF YOU HAVE THE HARD DRIVE.

XBOX 360 Backwards Compatability List

It looks like they are still going through emulation on some of the games. "The folks at Xbox® are working hard to add more of your favorite games to this list, so check back often for the latest updates."

How can you be a Sony fan after the latest Sony/BMG fiasco? What does being a "fan" of one holding of a corporation have to do with your decision to buy gaming consoles from another of their holdings?

Allow me to draw a comparison:

Bad analogy, microsoft has released quality products year after year with free updates to newfound bugs everyday. :)

On the other hand, Sony attempts to load malicious spyware copy protection onto your machine. (and if you try to tell me its only possible because of windows, I'll laugh because the same thing could be written for OSX) Bad Bad Sony! When I bought a 65" sony TV, the HDTV "unit" went bad, and sony refused to replace it because it only screwed up on ~50% of the channels.

I could go on and on about the crappiness of Sony products and why they are a POS corporation, but its all ancedotal.
I'm wonder if any of these people (http://www.ps2settlement.com/) will be buying PS3's?

So basically, what you're saying, is that your personal experience with Sony has been bad, and therefore it's your goal to hurt them in any way possible, including smack-talk on public forums.

Maugan, while I agree with you that most of Sony's products have gone way downhill, every big corporation has a bad side to it. There is no preverbial savior among them. Sure, Sony has jumped into the spyware game... one that Microsoft jumped into years ago. You don't remember all the madness about Windows XP and ME allowing MS to look into your machine? You don't remember the holy craptitude of Windows 98? Or OMG 3.1? How about the fact that Microsoft has virtually monopolized the software industry and overprices its buggy software. How about citing their NMEROUS lawsuits? Although Freeware is certainly making a stand. I've heard the new OpenOffice is badass. Anyhow, I'm getting off topic.

The point is that no big corporations are philanthropical pushovers. They do whatever it takes to make money. End of story. Should that stop you from buying either the XBox 360 or the PS3? Well, no, not in and of itself. But the wise consumer will be wary of both, and will carefully evaluate them to ensure that he's getting a quality product.

I'm already wary of the XBox after hearing the BS about emulation. Sounds like a typical MS crapware non-solution to me.

Here is what I hear all around at work.
The interest in 360 is horrendous. However not everyone is aware that there are going to be two options. The $300 dollar option is just Xbox 360 hat will play only games for 360. $400 option is supposed to be backwardly compatible, regardless if it's emulator or actual compatibility.

The biggest differences between both options is that $400 one is fully network ready and comes with all kinds of accessories. Also, someone might correct me on that one; $300 option does come with hard drive. You must buy it yourself.

I only hope MS learned on heir mistakes and step by step will master this platform to allow us to play ALL older games. However, we all know how monopoly works and how it makes its money. And believe me; they make more money on their accessories and games than actual Xbox.

When it comes to upgrading your TV and other systems...
Here is a tip. If you were thinking about and are almost ready you should maybe make a move soon. The biggest day in retailers’ world is coming in just under a week. It's called Black Friday and happens every year just after the Thanksgiving. Although the door busters are a great mystery until Thanksgiving evening, just Google Black Friday and take a look.

Also for impatient, who want their Xbox 360 earlier - Best Buy starts selling them on Tuesday, the 22nd. I think that's two days earlier than the rest of retailers. No rainchecks, but I know some of the stores open at midnight for a quick sale. You can give them a call and find out if there is going to be one open for business near you.

transio,

its not only my experiences with sony products, but many of my friends' poor experiences including a Sony X-plod head unit that caught my friend's car on fire nearly.

I realize that personal experiences shouldn't be grounds for "smack talk on public forums" however, I feel the need to let everyone know just how piss-poor their products are.

The PS3 is no exception in my eyes.

Ok I am not saying I know everything because I dont. For starters reason why (course being read and heard) that not all xbox games will be backward compatable because the 2 systems being xbox and 360 house diff video cards and they have tro pay royalties to other party which ends up costing MS more money.

Now about one system being better than the other. I guess it depends on your prefence. I love all 3. Why you ask because they are diff, yes graphics are better on xbox games than ps and GC but I have seen ps2 games i.e God of war have waay better graphics than most xobx games and well is sad but a lil game on GC called RE4 blows most of the games ps2 and xbox away. No havent played Re4 just seen from afar. You cant really say these graphics are good sure with right set up they will be good but and correct me if i am wrong developers usually dotn get the full potential of the console until years after its released. Even more so when the company comes out with a new system. So choose what you choose but dont act like a fanboy down playing the rest.

As far as the revolution... Well as nintendo says we are ok with being 3rd we are more about innovation than sales. ya thats pretty smart to me why waste money trying to be #1 when u make just as much being #3.

Ya cant wait for all 3 to come out myself but may have to go the whole buy one and ebay it to help pay for my own unless a certain someone <cough> wormgod can hook me up with his discount :)

OMFG, Microsoft has released MEDIOCRE products year after year. I take it you've never had to deal with UNIX administration vs Microsoft administration? Or manage a Unix web server vs a Microsoft Web Server? Microsoft should be blamed for ALLOWING the installation of spyware on a their OS! You can't even infect a Unix kernel! Microsoft are a bunch of idiots. Anyone who believes Microsoft delivers "quality products" has never experienced the quality available from the alternatives. Kind of like when Chevy owners talk about how great their suv is! (They have never had a VX to drive!)

So NICE of Microsoft to deliver patches all the time! Sure is handy when they sell CRAP and then you should be grateful for the patches!

Maug lol I thought i explain pretty well but if need explain more well i can..... nm I cant.

You cant base one companies products off another, yes same brand name but diff departments make the items they are just using the brand name to sell thier products.

For instance you have a regular nickle well people are going to pay a nickle for it. But if you have a nickle with MS branding people will shell out for it why???? Well because its MS.

Hope that analogy helped :)

yes, we are...

But it just got interesting.

Bottom line is that if it wasn't for MS' sloppy job I and many others in IT services wouldn't have a job. It's nice of them to release updates so often that we have to update our MRI discs every week. But what does it say about them? That they are working hard to protect us against themselves?
Unless Linux platform becomes more user friendly, and I do not mean just the interface, about 80% of small users are pushed to use MS OS. Whatever they release. And word has it that Longhorn is supposed give the maker even more control over small users' machine.

Going back to Xbox360. There are always pros and cons of a new product, any new product. It will be hard to compare 360 with PS3 for now, until both are released, and I hear PS3 release could be delayed. Sony might not keep up their deadline by this Christmas. However, when they are both on a market, I am sure members of this board will get divided one more time...

as was halo, but thats all that really appeals to me on xBox CURRENTLY. I can't say that one will be better than the other currently, but I have a friend at epic who isn't telling me much, but betting his arse that PS3 will blow the doors off the xBox 360. And he's an xBox FANBOY HARDCORE. I for one will play my friends 360, and wait for the Revolution and the PS3 i have way to many GC and PS2 games that I love, and that new Revolution controller is going to rock hard.... I'm betting there will be some sort of HMD released for the Revolution before it's all said and done... can't wait to play zelda with one controller being the shield and the other being the sword.. HOLY! I am impressed with the xBox though, it's nothing to sneeze at, but it's aimed more at PC gamers who want a console. I would own all three if i could afford it.

My PSP, DS, GC and PS2 will have to hold me over until then... he he he.

I can't believe I'm saying this (being a mac fanatic) but in all fairness it really isn't microsoft trying to screw anyone with the backwards compat thing. They went from x86 architecture to powerpc for xBox360 and it's extremely difficult to pull off that emulation.

that being said, I Hate microsoft, they SUXXORS!!!!!!!!!111111

he he.

Yeah, MS isn't really doing emulation, they are implementing the Xbox API. The PS2 does true emulation of the PS1 hardware, registers, clocks, etc. Not a bad way to go, actually, it just requires work for every game, so compatibility is maybe. If they had delayed the launch until the API was fully implemented they could have guaranteed compatibility.

It's the same Microsoft BS, release it now, download the patch later.

Hey, I just got a new "rootkit" CD from Sony for Unix. The instructions were very clear:

1. Open vi.
2. #include <rootkit.cc>
3. Recompile kernel.
4. Reboot machine, pointing to new, infected kernel for bootup.
5. Congratulations, you are now infected with the XCP rootkit!

Oh, wait, didn't happen, cuz I would never do such a thing, and there is no way in hell to make it happen without my knowledge, or hide its presence, etc.

I'm only a fan of one game on ANY console - Gran Turismo. I'm waiting for PS3 to come out so I can buy Gran Turismo 4 and a nice steering wheel setup to play on.

technocoy: hehe its funny, my friend that works extensively with epic (provides all their facial animation tools) says that he's pretty sure the Xbox 360 is going to top the PS3 in "prettiness"

ahh well, we can all make grand conjecture until the hardware actually hits the streets.

Here's my experience so far...

Pre-bought my 360 (paid in full along with 3 games) back in September with a "guarentee" from EB games that I'd have it for Christmas. Got a call from them last week saying that shipped quanities had been severly cut down and stores were only getting small fractions of what they had been promised, my date for pickup was pushed to Febuary  . It's now about 11:30pm and instead of being happily inline down at the mall I've just finished visiting my 4 local Wal-Marts, 2 Radioshacks,GamesStop, BestBuy, Etc. each of which got only about 10 - 25 of the cheeper units, and 2-5 of the better units (which the employee's put aside for themselves). People have been in line there since about noon yesterday in some cases. If I cant grab one when Kmart opens in the morning I'm affraid I'll be stuck waiting...

Maybe Sega, Nintendo, and Atari should merge and take on this whole MS / Sony thing.

You all have been pretty busy while I have been gone, hahaha....

I get my 360 through work today. I will probably stop off on my way home and see if I can find anything decent for it. All the games will probably be sold out by the time I am outta here, but there really isnt anything I have my eye on anyways.

Since I develop for most game platforms, I dont like to pick favorites. But.... if I had to.... I would pick PC, heh. Hell, its completely upgradeable anyways, right? ;)

maugan,

that IS funny as hell. I will have to reserve judgement though until Some one has a real cev kit for the PS3... If it looks as good as the demo at E3, there are no questions in my mind. but if not, then i think they will be pretty neck and neck. I can't wait... it will suck if sony pushes to 2007, but i can't see how they can afford to.

After all the hype and drama surrounding the whole Xbox 360 shipping thing... I walked into Circuit City around noon and bought a premium system, extra waireless controller, 3 games, and a 2 year service plan for $625. No lines, no fuss, no drama. It was the very last system in the whole place, they decided to sell the black friday machines early... money is money reguardless of what day you sell the machine on I guess. I then walked over to EB where I had prebought a system and some games and cancelled my entire deposit. No long wait for me, everbody should try again Friday.

P.S. - This thing is worth every penny!!!

Got mine yesterday. MS actually got them shipped to developers on time for once! Woot!

First HOME impressions: The power cable is insane. Could power a fridge. the HD and optical outs are a must in order for it to look better than a regular old XBox. Without HD, it is simply an XBox.

Picked up Condemned and Ridge Racer 6. Ridge Racer is not so impressive, but fun. Condemned is simply amazing. Fun gameplay and great atmosphere. recommended.
