My engine pinged today going up a small hill. It lasted for about 20-30 seconds and then went away. I tried to get it to do it again, but could not.

This is the first time that this has ever happened but it concerns me a bit. Any ideas on a cause?

very true, instead of getting raped for higher octane fuel do octane boosters (additives) work?

Could Be water in fuel tank.... going up a hill mighta put the water pocket right at the fuelpump area degrading octane rating.... reason for being unable to reproduce is cuz you used all the water in your tank already.....

Gas floats on water water in gasoline tends to "stick together" in bubble kinda like italian salad dressing.

but then again.. i'm not an auto mechanic.. just a helicoptor mechanic....

Sounds like a candidate for some Seafoam treatment.

After four years my VX would only consume 93 octane. 89 or 87 octane would make my VX ping.

Already done, and if it was water in the tank, I should have been flushed out after a couple of tanks worth of gas, I may try and pput 93 octane in it the next fill up and see if that helps.
