Just found out last night that the Hialeah RallyCross is on a Sunday so won't be able to make it. For some reason I had it in my head all along they were on Saturday and consequesntly just had to eat $70 cancelling my hotel reservations. In any case, I doubt I'll be able to attend any of them due to the Sunday thing but the Miami area VX crowd should definitely check it out. RallyCross is a great opportunity to let your VX spread its wings and for you to challenge and assess your driving skills. Plus the SCCA runs a great event and everyone helps out in true team spirit. Go, drive, enjoy!

Is anyone in the Miami area going to this? I've never done any offroading before.... would this be a good place to start?

This isn't really offroading. Ever been to an autocross? It's where they set up a course delineated by cones in a flat parking lot and run it for time. It's all about control. RallyCross is the same thing but in a field, like a pasture or grass parking lot. You can check out some pictures from my March event here: Mitsubishi Rally Gallery. LOL!;pg; Well, I'm 6'3" and fit fine with a Simpson SuperBandit helmet. Heraclid is about the same height but has to really recline his seat to fit, but seems to be getting used to it as his times keep getting better.;Do;

I wear a big snowmachining helmet when I race at the drag strip. I'm fine when I'm in the car but getting in and out can become a problem.

Ok, but if i'm gonna go drifting around corners, how easily can i flip it?

The only way you'll drift around corners in a VX is if you disconnect the TOD. Believe me, you'll impress the Subarus.;Do;

Joe, sorry to hear that. I vaguely remembered it being on Sunday, but it just never clicked. I wrote it off almost right away based on location and never got to thinking about it any further I guess. Yeah, that's every bit of 6 hours from here, and on Sunday too... kinda hard to do. Doable, but doubtful. Not very accomodating to anyone but those only a couple of hours out. Even then, it's Sunday.

t2p, like Joe said, I have to recline a good bit but it's getting almost natural. Jay Dunford from this board has done some rallycrossing and said he also had to but that when he got the signal to mash that pedal it never crossed his mind. It's basically the same for me - it's really not a problem, and I really thought it would be. I'm using a Fulmer Snell M2000 motorcycle helmet. I think it has to be rated at least Snell M98 for SCCA rallycross.

transio, I did my first run or two more conservatively, but now that I've done a few of these things, I get pretty aggressive and you're going to have to try hard to lose the rear end, let alone flip, even in slightly banked turns. I've had it slide just a bit twice, but it was nothing to be worried about and it can help set you up better for the next section of the course. A lot of people are out there TRYING to drift for precisely that reason. Once you're out there and doing it, the rollover concern melts away. I look at it this way - the VX will grab and hold as much as you need it to, and it will break loose at the point that holding may get you into more trouble than slipping. Plus these courses are designed with an eye toward safety by keeping it fairly tight to keep speed down. You can't carry enough speed into a hairpin to get you into big trouble. I like rallycross a lot, and I think the dirt actually helps - there's actually a lot you can do in dirt that I'd never try on pavement.

Thanks for the info, guys! I won't be able to make it, though, because I'm still fabricating my dual exhaust. I hope to finish the project tomorrow, but who knows ?!
