View Full Version : Featherfoot's ECU project

Now is the time to stand up and be counted! My contact has said that he was starting the inline 6 cyl and the V6 programmer while he waits on some follow on info from the current project.

I think we need to give him concrete info on the interest.

The V6 will cover the 3.2L, 3.5L & the 3.8L(?) which just about covers everything Isuzu makes, the Honda Passport and various and assundry GM products.

The design criteria is: to plug into the OBDII test plug, download and restore the stock program repeatedly; be able to upload and retract 3 (ea.) modified programs into the ECU.

1 for economy.
1 for TOW/HAUL (probably most common for daily driving.)
1 for all out performance. (WOT competition)

The programmer is targeted to cost under $400.00, probably $350.00 area.

We are anticipating 30HP gain on the naturally aspirated engines and more on the supercharged ones. We are looking at what would be considered the max allowable with the stock tranny and differentials.

If we were able to develop a kit for the tranny that would allow more would there be any interest?? cost of course would be adjusted as necessary.

I will make thia a poll so he can observe the results directly.

I voted for the naturally aspirated 'cause that's what I have. However, if I got a supercharger in the future, I would spring for the tranny kit as well.

I, of course voted for supercharged plus tranny kit... assuming it can be done. Seriously, whatever can be done would be great! I have the SC, and would be ok with just the extra performance on top of that, but I thought with the SC that the tranny was just about up to its limit?

Anyway, I'm up for anything. $350 area for selectible modes would be a steal!

since this is just reprogramming the ecu(?). would it be possible to upgrade from na to sc later on? or do we need to buy the sc version?

I am in for the SC + tranny kit. But, I gotta keep my TOD too, don't want to end up just RWD.

Just wondering if speedometer recalibration (for larger tires) would be out of the question?

Hey Feather-
I'm in for naturally aspirated. Could you please be more specific about the demands on the vehicle. Fuel consumption etc... Also I am in west LA, so if you need a second rig to use feel free to ask. I just want to make sure that I can go back to my default/factory settings if it doesn't work out.
Thanks

I'd be interested in the s/c + tranny kit, but would like more info on what the trans. "kit" would consist of and the kits total cost including estimated time and labor cost for trans. kit installation.

Would it be compatible with the "Interceptor"?

Also, if a 3-mode controller would be made specific to the all-out s/c and trans. kit, could its' "tow" setting be made safe for a s/c with stock trans. by "limiting" the max power output in "tow" mode?

This would allow the owner to install/evaluate the programmer now and the trans kit later.

The same deviation could be implemented in the s/c only kit, making the "tow" function "limited" for naturally aspirated engines, and allowing the user the option of upgrading to a s/c later.

Sorry, for the lack of info, my fingers were getting tired so I just posted the bait.

each of the 3 programs will give you the opportunity to adjust the settings +/- 5%, tire size input, rev limiter and speed limiter adjustments and tranny shift point adjustments.

without any doubts, count me in on the naturally aspired version., even though in the near future I plan on Tones SC. My question is what happens with the naturally aspired version once I install the SC ?...Either way, I still want the naturally aspired version.....thx, & by the way, GOOD JOB Oops! I meant naturally aspirated.

Forgive me my ignorance, but it all sounds like russian to me..:(
Can somebody explain me what this is all about,
1-what is it
2-can you do it yourself
3-what does it look like/is it big heavy

Holy !@#$%^&*!!!

This what I've been waiting for.

I'm in! I'm in! I'm in!;eekr;

I am voting for the full power option including ECU modification, installing supercharger, and tranny kit!!!

I have not purchased the SC because I was looking for a little more oomph if you know what I mean. This really gives me hope.

Long live the VX!

Don't know!! Have to check with my local tyranny wizard.

We have to determine how much the box is capable of and then figure out how to get it through the shafts.

If we only need to wave the electrical wand I'm sure that will be in the program where needed.

May need to add disks and HD bands to the clutch pack we'll figure that out.

We do have a tranny available for modding.

Stay tuned.

I realize this may difficult, but as this project gets better defined, can youprovide more detail between the modes? It sounds like most people are interested in the performance mode, but I wouldalsolike to know more about the other modes. For example, approx. what percent improvement to you expect in fuel economy for the 'economy' mode. Also, what is the 'tow/haul' mode buy you over the standard factory load? Etc.

WormGod

What would be nice is to incorporate the abilities of the Interceptor that Tone offers into it. Just a thought, if that is possible.

With all of these sweet mods out now (soon to be this one hopefully), I think I will finally just kiss my warranty goodbye and go for broke. I am missing too much fun it seems.

No data available for the VX, however, on the 5.3L V8 in the GM trucks there were minor performance gains and an increase of 3mpg fuel mileage. (that would have been close to 20% on my vehicle from stock)

Also, what is the 'tow/haul' mode buy you over the standard factory load?

in the `tow/haul' mode the bulk of the performance gaines are concentrated between 1000 and 4000 rpm, vs performance where the gaines are maximized between 4000 and WOT.

Etc.

I don't quite understand the need for economy/performance mode, are they not the same tuning? Both economy and performance tuning should be more timing, and mixture as lean as it can go without getting EGT's too high, or seeing knock.

The performance adjustments shouold be at a higher load and TPS, and the economy should be at a lower point on the map.

That way, if you want economy, just don't gas it hard, and max performance is always available by stomping on it.

I could understand if the different maps were for using different grades of gas, but otherwise I don't get it. Am I missing something basic here in tuning theory?

In my initial post I covered the 3 modes very lightly.

The economy mode is the mode to use when traveling from LA to Miami for the best fuel mileage and still be able to get out of your own way when needed.

The tow/haul mode is used for towing and will probably be used as the daily driving mode because of the SOTP reward when you punch it to show that Marano that you only look funny.

the performance mode is what you switch to when the Marano wants proof.

any questions??

this may be the most desirable mod that i have heard so far in the performance area, as i can't afford the supercharger right now what with the new house and all. why am i skeptical about the 30hp projection though? everything i've found on ecu mods give about 10hp at the MOST to a stock car. If you can bring 30hp to reality, i will be in for this one (at $350-400). but it has to be consistent on the dyno as well as shown not to kill our babies in the process... I am greatly appreciative of all the people doing these great mods for us all lately!

can you give us a timeline for completion on this thing?

keep us posted

Clearly an LS1 is a more robust powerplant then our 3.5 (correct?). I suppose we could assume some respectable gains but is 30hp realistic? I really look forward to seeing the data, and am certainly interested in the ecu mod. Especially the improved fuel econ if that is viable. Thanks

It would seem so. However as long as it's possible to get 500HP out of a 2.5L 4-cyl stranger things have happened. LaPole had a couple of chips modified he sez he got 50 to 60 hp out of his '94 350. We never know what is possible 'til we try.
