Ok, here's what makes me happy driving with iPod driven music. In case you've been thinking about this one for a while.

I went with a Sony CDX-F7005X Xplod stereo. It has auxillary out in the back.

Ordered a Sony XA-300 off of Ebay from a guy in Canada so the price was great. (You need this for the auido line in.)

Belkin stereo adapter (cause it's what BestBuy had in stock, I guess you could go with a Monster)

Blank insert (where the 6 disc changer was)
Hole drilled in this for the line-in audio. It makes a great area to keep the iPod and a phone or what ever.

Only draw back i found was the car charger causes audio feedback, like a tape hissing sound.

But the audio sound quality is awesome. I was using the tape adapter and hated it, though it was the best out of 3 (tape, tunecast, and iTrip)

I've seen some cheaper alternatives. with the line-in in the front but i wated a cleaner look.

I just put this Ipod holder together with wire wesh,(about a half hour) to make a patern for bending a piece of Alum. plate. I like it so well, I don't know if it would be worth the effort to remake it. (I don't have a sheet metal brake).
Like my laptop table, it also uses the ashtray slides and requires no alterations from stock.http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/P1010010.JPGhttp://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/P10100081.JPGhttp://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/P10100091.JPG
The one picture is of the Ashtray, Laptop table, and Ipod holder. next will be a drink holder. or two? I don't smoke, so ashtrays are coin holders for me.
As noted by others the only drawback is when you charge these from the lighter outlet, you will get amplified feed through the stereo speakers,
Easy fix, just listen to a CD while charging.

OC, you're in Kona? Get ready for visitors! ;-)

I'm taking the wifey to Hawaii for her 30th b-day. We are flying into Kona October 1 around 8:30 pm, planning on staying the night close by, then heading to Volcanoes in the morning. Can you advise me of a cheap hotel near the airport?

(By the way, this post is NOT off-topic... I bought her an iPod for her b-day, too! ;-)

Thanks much! PM me if you prefer...

:)
Notice: No Cassette player in head unit :(
I want to get a Griffin Air click remote, Velcro fastens to steering wheel, then you can put it out of sight, like in the glove box. I have friends that tell me that the cassette adaptors can wear out your player (spinning with no tape).
I don't use tapes anymore, anyway. Best ones stolen out of my Miata.
P.S. I love the Big Island, the crater could use some guard rails, unless you want your Ex to see the bottom. (JOKING)

The setup I have is a HUGE improvement over the stock AM/FM/Cassette head unit & 6-disc changer. I went with the Alpine CDA9847 (AM/FM/CD/MP3 head unit) and the Alpine iPod Mobile Interface - KCA420I. Replace the stock CD changer (or, in my case, the 5th defective CD changer) with the ISUZU blank cubby hole to have a nice connection point , connect your iPod, set it on random play via the head unit, and away you go! The sound is awesome, and there's no need to deal with cassette adapters or a rat's nest of wires. No commercials, no mindless chit-chat, just music... sweet! Here's how it looks...
