View Full Version : Lifting the VX. Which should I do? Body or Suspension?

So I want to lift the VX. And since im on the hunt for a Proton Yellow i was on Auto Trader. This VX has a 2 inch body lift. What are the pro's and con's to doing a body lift vs doing a suspension lift. I would think the body lift would be alot cheaper as well.

Nope. All you need for a suspension lift is OME 912 or OME 919 springs. Body lift kits are a valuable from Independent4x and honestly they both are reasonably priced.

What makes the suspension lift a little more expensive is all the "non-essential" things that you might want after the lift. Things like diff drop brackets, adjustable lower links, longer steel braided brake lines, modified driveshaft, and various other items are not really necessary, but help put the VX back to settings that decrease the new heavier load on some of the components after lift. But honestly just springs and torsion bar crank are "necessary" for the suspension lift. There have been so many exhaustive threads on this subject here on this site though, the search should be your friend for a while.

I agree with Littlebeast.

That Proton was running 35" tires... I can't remember his name but I'm pretty sure it was a 3" body lift as I helped him along the process.

I installed a 3" body lift to help run 35" tires and reduce strain on the drive-train. If you're going less than 35" tires, I wouldn't recommend it because there's a good amount of changes that need to be done for the body lift to work. If your ARE going 35" tires, then there are pros and cons to installing a body lift, one of the pros is a smaller cost.

Suspension lift gives you more clearance for bigger tires and more clearance on the trail.
Body lift gives you more clearance for bigger tires and looks good at the mall.

My body lifted VX looked great at the mall and on the trails in Moab, you know in 2012,2013,2014.... where were you again? Bueller? :slap:

I cant find a single body lift for a VehiCROSS. would an Amigo lift work? They're practically the same car but the VehiCROSS looks like a futuristic version.

thank you. really hoping I can find a 2 inch. Cause 1 inch doesn't seem like its worth the work. but 3 inch is just a bit much for what im going for.

but if I go with the 1 inch do I need need the steering extension?

I attached the link to the Autotrader listing in the original post. The ad says its only a 2 inch body lift. judging by the 4 wheel shifter sunk down it is a body life.

Nice, hope to see you there again soon. I was also at the 2010 Moab meet as a mostly stock VXer. My point other than the jab, is that the VX wheeled pretty well for me for three years with a body lift/suspension lift setup. Of course, clearance was an obvious drawback. If I did all over again... I might do the same, or I might go all suspension. I do hate changing half-shafts though.

The reason Indy4x doesn't sell a 2" body lift? Well, the rear body mounts use a bolt that threads into the frame and I guess the size is impossible to find for a 2" body lift. I'm sure you could get around this a few ways but that's what I was told by Matt at Indy.

Also, I didn't use the steering extension for the 3" BL, so you definitely wouldn't need it for the 1" BL
