View Full Version : VXC Products survey...

hey guys and gals...

Been mulling around the idea of POSSIBLY resurrecting offering VXC products again. This would include the original ABS skidplates (front, rear, sides), grill inserts (plastic and stainless steel), shifterplates (old and new), clear lenses, and the new mud guards. I've included some pics of the products for your reference. Just need to know which product you would honestly be interested in purchasing right away. Reason asking is that I'd start with the most 'wanted/needed' product to get some cash flow to get the others going as well.

Front and Rear ABS skidplates:

Side ABS skidplates:

Old shifterplates:
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/rudesvx/shifterplate1.jpg (http://s1124.photobucket.com/user/rudesvx/media/shifterplate1.jpg.html)

Old shifterplates and front clear lens:
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/rudesvx/shifterplate2.jpg (http://s1124.photobucket.com/user/rudesvx/media/shifterplate2.jpg.html)

New shifterplates:
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/rudesvx/shifterplate3.jpg (http://s1124.photobucket.com/user/rudesvx/media/shifterplate3.jpg.html)

Grill inserts (plastic):
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/rudesvx/grill.jpg (http://s1124.photobucket.com/user/rudesvx/media/grill.jpg.html)

Grill inserts (plastic):
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/rudesvx/grill2.jpg (http://s1124.photobucket.com/user/rudesvx/media/grill2.jpg.html)

Grill inserts (stainless steel):
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/rudesvx/grill3.jpg (http://s1124.photobucket.com/user/rudesvx/media/grill3.jpg.html)

Mud Guards:
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l571/rudesvx/mudguard1.jpg (http://s1124.photobucket.com/user/rudesvx/media/mudguard1.jpg.html)

Note, with the skidplates, I do NOT have the original molds as they were destroyed by the former vacuum-former when they closed up. However, I DO have the original CAD files that I can get the molds machined out to start forming more as needed. The rear plate I can probably get started in producing as the mold is not that complex to make. Then, I'd follow up with the sides when cash starts coming in. I'm already talking with a local former who has given me rough prices to form parts. But, I'm going to see if I can negotiate the prices lower as they're a bit pricier than the previous former I dealt with years ago.

Again, I'm still on the fence in making the jump to do this as I know how much work is involved with producing parts and I'm figuring out the best approach of keeping post finish work to a minimum per project. If you're honestly interested in purchasing any of the items mentioned, please add to the poll to increase interest count. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. rudy

Side skidplates and new shifterplates - like RIGHT NOW. ;)

VX in shop getting final prep for paint, so if these are a go soon that would be great. Money in hand, Rudy!

And I've still got your front and rear skids on there, looking great.

If that front skid plate had some mounting points for foglights I'd be all over them.

Gorgeous work though (I'm a mechanical product design engineer, and appreciate good design and workmanship).

Would probably have to be some embedded metal for that. Not sure fiberglass tabs would survive the torquing of top-heavy driving lights.

Check out the safari bar option (http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=22249) if you're going for mounted lights.

Those would be mine. Found Here (http://myvehicross.com/modifications/vx-o2-concept-style-gear-and-4lh-selector-knobs/).

These ones are cheapo eBay ones as I couldn't find the Razo ones JoFotoz mentioned above at the time.

Automatic Shift Knobs (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Matrix-Shift-Knob-Cylindrical-Aluminum-Red-Carbon-Fiber-Automatic-Transmission-/331398712093?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d28e70b1d&vxp=mtr)
Manual Shift Knobs (http://www.ebay.com/itm/MANUAL-STICK-SHIFT-CARBON-FIBER-GUNMETAL-ACCORD-CIVIC-CAVALIER-GOLF-SHIFT-KNOB-/400812301514?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d52465cca&vxp=mtr) (used for 4lo/hi shifter)
I have a matching one for the e-brake, but can't figure out how to remove the current cover without actually cutting it off.

I just took them apart, sanded the hell out of them, primer, paint and satin clear. I love them! And they do compliment the Shifter Plates and Faux CF prints of the interior! :bgwo:

Do note, you will have to permanently remove the square tubing around the gear selector.

Rudy, thanks for offering these up.
I have voted on the survey, but it is a conditional vote.
Yes to -
Front skid plate
Rear skid plate
Side panels
Mud guards (will they come with the rubber to attach to the body??)

Trouble is, living Down Under freight is expensive, so I would want to consolidate all parts into one shipment. I am sure we can work out how to do that, and there is no urgency (within limits LOL).

If everyone follows through on what they put in the survey though? Rudy's gonna be a busy fella whipping up 115 (as of now) orders.

Keeping 'em crossed that this happens quick-like.

Ok, so I'm in the middle of getting the rear plate mold fabricated to start things off. Will be sending CAD file of the rear plate mold to a buddy who can CNC it in one piece. Hoping to have results by next week some time. If the mold is to my satisfaction, I'll bring it to the formers to get more accurate quotes for fabrication. I should have a better assessment on prices for the rear plate at that time. If things go smooth and no hiccups, then I may pursue getting the side skidplates mold fabricated to get that started.

Also, plan to work on molds for the NEW shifterplates at the same time. Will keep you posted as things progress. rudy

You know I was just messin' earlier. I hope you make a bundle for your efforts. People like you who support the ongoing improvement of our platform deserve a lot of credit and support in return.

Now then... where are my side skids? ;)

hey all...

I'm considering going with 'kickstarter' (https://www.kickstarter.com) to be able to finance and get the ball rolling in producing these parts. I've never dealt with this process and was wondering if anyone out there has and has any experience, and/or any advice, suggestions, and what to avoid.

When I first started VXC, I financed the initial investment in producing molds to make parts out of my own pocket. That was before kids got big, mortgage, etc. With this option, through the help of investors, I would be able to finance the initial investment in producing the molds and get parts cranking out to the public sooner than later. And when things get rolling, I would be able to expand the line of products in the future for out beloved vx for newer and cooler accessories.

Please let me know your thoughts. If you want to pm me in private, please do so or email direct (rudesvx@sbcglobal.net). Thanks. rudy

If the manual set up (console cover) is similar to the auto. Then it might be possible. But since manuals are not common, it would be a custom piece for you. We can discuss later when things get going on my end. Thanks for the interest. rudy

I kickstart (read: purchase) a lot on Kickstarter. The one main gripe is not having a project meet deadlines and or not coming to fruition at all. Leaving everyone that helped fund a project at a loss of funds.

I'm putting together a personal project on kickstarter myself and it is pretty straight forward. The difficult part is coming up with a delivery date and sticking to it and delivering. In your project I'm sure there are a few variables to account for as well.

IMHO, communication is key before and after a project is funded, and having a clear goal and product availability to those that fund.

Also, if choosing this route, you may be able to get everything you need done for manufacturing for most or even all your products based on your poll above.

JoFotoz
02/19/2015, 07:05 PM
Have you come up with prices yet?

You'll need a 'normal' retail price to publish..
.......then those that back a 'kickstarter'...
...get a discount off that .

Its a good system in that you get 100% valid orders PAID upfront...
..rather than 30 people saying YUP..then never following through.

However, you need to get enough to finance.. in order to satisfy
the orders for those that do put money upfront.... or you have to refund I believe?

IIWY.... I'd start with the front/back & side skid plates.

Offer a package on all 4 ( front/back & two sides.)
A deal for just front & back
A deal for front OR back
A deal for just sides.

Just my 2 cents!

OK..some actual 'rules'

How does Kickstarter work?

Thousands of projects are funding on Kickstarter at any given moment. Each project is independently created and crafted by the person behind it. The filmmakers, musicians, artists, and designers you see on Kickstarter have complete control and responsibility over their projects. They spend weeks building their project pages, shooting their videos, and brainstorming what rewards to offer backers. When they feel ready, a creator can launch their project on the site and share it with their community.

Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.

Why is funding all-or-nothing?

All-or-nothing funding is a core part of Kickstarter and it has a number of advantages:

It's less risk for everyone. If you need $5,000, it's tough having $1,000 and a bunch of people expecting you to complete a $5,000 project.

It motivates. If people want to see a project come to life, they're going to spread the word.

It works. Of the projects that have reached 20% of their funding goal, 81% were successfully funded. Of the projects that have reached 60% of their funding goal, 98% were successfully funded. Projects either make their goal or find little support. There's little in-between.

To date, an incredible 44% of projects have reached their funding goals.

Knigh7s
02/19/2015, 07:30 PM
To add to JoFotoz posts...

If you do get fully funded, you can look into backerkit.com (https://backerkit.com/features). If anyone wasn't able to fund the kickstarter, you can setup "pre-orders" to let the late birds in, increasing your funding. Another great part is "add-ons" say I was only able to get the front and back skids, but after the goal was reached, I can "add" the side skids to my order, bumping your funds up again.

Vendetta
02/21/2015, 09:39 PM
Unless you're going to spin up a production line for receiving frequent orders for these parts and possibly others, then I suggest that the kickstarter model is just too complicated and the wrong way to go.

If all you need are the funds to cover your time and materials plus margin and a beer or two, then you might consider taking money up front from customers, one part or kit at a time (e.g. side skids - currently the most in demand, then rear skids, then front skids, etc. based on demand).

The end results are the same and a lot less complicated than involving a third party. You get the money up front, and your buyers get the goods when you make them.

Just letting you all know that my machinist buddy will be cnc'ing the rear skidplate mold tomorrow. Should have it in my hands this weekend. I'll be cnc'ng the smaller plugs (hitched/non-hitched) myself some time next week. Once complete, I'll bring this mold over to a local former that I've been dealing with and talk numbers to get these formed. Will keep you posted when things get further along. Thanks. rudy

Interested to see the progress you've been making Ron. As I said via PM, the skid plates I picked up from a past VX owner in Ohio awhile back had stress fractures throughout the mold that I'm having to have addressed by my bodywork dude, so very doubtful I'd go back to the same origin for any side plates even if they were being offered.

Why not just get them LineX'd. Since they are subject to damage because of where they are mounted, seems like an elegant solution. LineX would even fill in the fractures you already have so they won't spread. Your body work dude will be able to hide them but not keep them from getting worse.

@ Jo...Yeah i usually work with 7-10 # yellow foam for quick mockups here at work.

When i receive the parts, I'll clean them up and test fit the non-hitched version on my vx (since I have a standard hitch installed). Test fit for the non-hitched version of the rear plate is good. NOTE: Since the cladding and skidplates can vary from one vx to another, adding additional mounting screws to secure the top edge of the plate directly to the cladding will give you a uniform flushed fit. Since it's constructed out of ABS plastic, the plate is pliable enough to conform to the shape of the bumper. In my previous (Ebony) vx, I never had to use additional screws on the top edge. However, with this recent (Ivory) one, I added two additional screws on the outter top corners replacing two of the cosmetic screws on outter left and right. This resulted in a clean tight fit of the plate to the cladding bumper. I'll have a better explanation on the installation instructions in detail.

I'll be sending out the hitched version for a test fit to a fellow vxer soon. Mile High, you have a pm.

Final prices for the NON-hitched version are as follows:

-$225 primered only
ADD $85 for paint + clearcoat (OEM)
Installation hardware all included. Actual shipping is TBD.
PM me if you're interested in buying.

Once I get confirmation of fitment for the 'hitched' version (Tone Monday hitch), I'll be offering that up for sale afterwards.

After I do more hand finish work, I'll be selling this first NON-hitched version as is for $190. If you need it finished and painted OEM, add another $85. Let me know if you're interested.

hey guys...

Currently, the price is at $225 (primered only). However, I was just offered by my manufacturer a quantity discount if I order the rear plates before May 15th. This would ONLY apply to the NON-HITCHED version of the rear plate as I'm sending the HITCHED (Tone Monday) version out for test fitting still. This means, that I can offer the rear plate at $199 (primered only). Add $85 for oem paint still and shipping would be around $10-$15 (approx.). I'll verify exact shipping cost when I ship the HITCHED prototype out later this week. After May 15th, the price goes back up to $225. To make things easier, I'm going to create a direct PayPal link to order the rear plate.

This is your chance to purchase the rear plate at a discounted price. Do keep in mind that the funds will also help continue the development of the side and front skidplates as well as other vx goodies. Please e-mail me (rudesvx@sbcglobal.net) if you have questions. Thanks. rudy

hey Evo...

We chatted a couple of years ago about getting together but never came around to it. I work here in SF (near the ballpark). If you want I can help install on your VX if you're in the area. Let me know.

The front and sideplate molds have not been developed yet as it requires funds to produce the molds. Funds from the rearplate sales will help continue development of these molds and other future VX accessories.

Yes, they are textured black off the mold. The other, I sandblasted the texture for an experiment. rudy

So could I use it right out of the mold? I like the way it looks without doing anything to it. Would it need to be painted for some reason?

You would get a rough sanded edge as the plate needs to be cut out of the shell and sanded. What I was going to do with all the plates that are painted was to keep the surface texture, sand the outter edge, then paint color and a clearcoat with some texture to blend the smooth surface and textured surface a bit. Let me know if that sounds good to you. rudy

Just a reminder for those who are interested in buying the rear plate and haven't yet. May 15th is the deadline to purchase the rear plate (non-hitch version) at the discounted price of $199 (primered version). Add $85 if you want painted oem color w/ clearcoat. Shipping in the US only is $15-$18. Sales tax applied to CA residents. Note: if you have a standard aftermarket hitch (Curt, U-haul, etc.), other than a Tone Monday hitch, this rear plate WILL work and NOT interfere with your aftermarket hitch.

To purchase, here's the direct link:

Price goes back up to retail price of $225 after deadline date. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. rudy

Unfortunately, I won't. Not only do I work full time, I also teach part-time as well at a private art school. Also, my daughters won't get out of school til June. You may run into a fellow vxer who may have one of my front skidplates on at moab. There usually is. If it's made out of 1/4" abs material, then it's one of mine. If it's fiberglass, then it's someone elses. rudy

I will look for your skid plate on a VX in Moab, if I like it and get my order in before the 15th can I get it right out of the mold with just a little trimming but no sanding or priming done to it? I am thinking about just doing a textured clear only with no paint or primer but I am not sure so I would like to get it in raw form so I can decide after I get it.

I can send it raw. I'll cut most of the flash material off close to the edges and pre-drill the holes for you. You can apply whatever finish you like afterwards. Let me know if you decide to order or not. Thanks. Rudy

Hi Ron,

What is the recommended hardware to get these attached? I did a few searches in the forums and didn't seem to find anything from the past.

The plate will come with hardware (stainless steel replacement screws) and install instructions. Basically, utilizes the bottom oem cladding screw locations. Mostly this method will suffice to secure the plate to the cladding. However, because cladding differs from one to the next, you can replace the top cosmetic screws with self taps. I just replaced the top two outter corner ones as the corners were lifted and this gives it a cleaner flushed look. Others have replaced all of the cosmetic screws all together. Hope this helps.

The plate is very easy to attach 2 hex bolts and 3 screws. 10-30min. Great fitment!

Ok, here's the situation. There are about 50+ responses for the rear skidplate alone in the poll and ONLY 8 actual purchases come through. Not sure whether people are just shy or no longer interested in this mod. This has forced me to re-think the game plan to determine whether it's still worth doing. Since I do this out of passion rather than profit, it's hard to pay out of pocket on molds that prove difficult, to at least, break even. I now realize that any same person can click on the poll to bump up the numbers. This would explain the uneven ratio of poll numbers to sales. There's a few nibbles/inquiries here and there. Just no actual bites.

If sale numbers continue to remain stagnant for the rear plate alone, I may be forced to discontinue further development and offerings for the vx. As my time outside of work is limited. Let me know if you have any questions/insight. Thank you for your understanding. rudy

I wonder if you won't see a significant spike in sales for the side skid plates since those have never been offered before. And BTW I'd be willing to subsidize the molds for them if necessary. But I'd want to be at the top of the list. :)

Ron, I want to order a full set (front, rear, and sides) but because of shipping costs, I need to have them all shipped at once.
I also agree with Vt Mavrick that the side plates should be in heavy demand when you get to that stage.
What is the best way forward to give you the confidence to keep producing the various molds so that a full set is achievable??

You can PM me if you want.

I will order one from you but your order form just has 3 choices

PRIMERED REAR SKIDPLATE (NON-HITCHED) $225.00

PRIMERED REAR SKIDPLATE (TONE MONDAY HITCH) N/A

OEM PAINT W/ CLEARCOAT SERVICE OPTION $100.00

I would like it raw, it might be good to trim the excess and sand the seam so it fits in your shipping container and so I do not have a lot of trimming to do, I just do not want the texture sanded off or any paint or primer on it. Just let me know how I order it so it does not come sanded and primed.

Thanks,
Chris

hi Chris...

I have about 5 rear plates left in stock. All have been trimmed with the edges sanded. But, I left the textured surface and unprimed and unpainted til I get an order. I sell to you for $225 for unprimed and unpainted including shipping. Give me your PayPal e-mail address and I can send you an invoice. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions. rudy

hi PK...

I'm still a bit apprehensive in investing so much more into molds that is slow to break even. I like to see if I can get one more mod done and then make a decision then. Based on the inaccurate poll numbers, it appears the front is the most popular to pursue. But, based on history, I know that there's a lot of fronts already out there. And some of those same owners have the rears or will be purchasing one soon. So, it would only make more sense to go with the sides as that has yet to be offered (as both you and VT have mentioned earlier). I'll have to sleep on this and weigh out my options later. Thanks for the feedback both of you. rudy

Ron, just got mine in the mail, and have to say that is one nice piece of kit... But if you back out now, I won't be able to get the matching front piece. :bgwo:

I'm with the others on the sides as well. But how about the smaller items like grill pieces, shift plates, etc. Would those be easier/cheaper to get set up and possibly help bring in more funds for the front/side molds? :yeso:

I'm currently working on molds for shiftplates, mudguards, and hood fangs. I'll be able to release offerings for the grill kits and front clear lenses of the past soon as well. With the grill kits, I'll have the previous and newer designs too.

Currently getting the side and front plate molds quoted to see which is cheaper to get done first to generate more funds so I can get the latter fabricated afterwards. As suggested by someone earlier, I may do a pre-order for either mod to help with costs. Keep you posted.

My wife wants a set, (front and back) but we are saving up so we can purchase. I didn't vote on your poll because I knew it would be a little while before we could purchase. It's too bad that people could vote multiple times, or have voted and not been honest and followed through.

I've been working with Ron (Rudy) to get the rear skid plate with the Tone Hitch cutout complete. It's final design is great. If you use the right locking pin you don't have to remove the skid plate to use it.

Thanks to Ron for a great product. I wanted to screw the top into the cladding and I found some lag screws at Lowe's. They have the same Torx size as our cladding which is a bonus. I just painted them black, they come in a grey concrete color, and they worked great.

I'd really love to replace all the lenses on my VX; yellows, reds, etc. Something nice and smoked so that it blends in with the cladding.

Additionally, any chance on a complete grille replacement? I'd like something with touch more airflow--without running grille-less.
