View Full Version : Cranking torsion bar.

I'm new to this website and im sure I'm the 100th person asking about this. But I went to adjust my torsion bars and the adjustment bolts and there was no threads left to turn and the front is not lifted. I bought this expensive lift kit and don't want it to be a waste. Can someone please tell me what I should do !

You can re-index the bars to get more lift from them.

Where were you looking for threads? The bolt sit flush on the frame. The threads are on the adjuster that connects to the torsion bar. Just want to make sure your looking at the correct spot when looking for "threads".

Yes it looks exactly like this http://s1183.photobucket.com/user/gpa70737/media/DSC08640.jpg.html. The bolt is all the way cranked( screwed in all the way). And the vehicle is not lifted.

Hi Boonetown...

Thats exactly how it should look.
This bolt is more like turning a "valve".

Turning it will tension the t/bars and lead to front end lift...
...bolt will rotate, but not move in and out.

Its usually a good idea to spray/soak them with WD 40 or similar first.

Make sure you index ( mark) both bolts..and turn them equal amounts.

( IIRC its a 27 mm socket )

AND..after doing lift...get a front wheel alignment done.. :thumbup:

By the way jofotoz I love that bumper on your truck looks so mean!I custom made one using yours as a guide but it doesn't have the light guards .

I fully costumed it took about a week to do. Oh I had no idea you used that! No wonder it looked so clean. And yes when I get a chance I'll put pics up. It's needs to be re painted. Totally didn't think about putting primer on. Rust is coming through paint unfortunately

Also helps a LOT if you jack the front end up and take the weight off the front wheels.
Drive it around the block a time or two to let it settle before measuring both sides...adjust repeat. Even when turning both sides the same amount of times you may find it a little off from side to side. Also when you take it to the alignment shop make sure they don't crank them back down to make their job easier...Some will try this :(

One more thing the bolt is pretty rusty and I plan on using a good penetrating oil of course. What's the best kind of ratchet to use? And I'm honestly scared the bolt head may break off.

Give it a couple of days soak in penetrating oil...


...then a 27mm socket and big ratchet.

If they dont move at first..soak again...then try 'gingerly' with a
extension bar on the ratchet.

As Billy said... taking the load off them will help.

BTW.. I have never heard of T/bar bolts shearing...
....so Fingers crossed for ya!

That is a high tensile bolt with a very fine thread.
Use your penetrating oil for a few days if you cannot budge it with 4' of pipe.
