I have a flat car trailer and a lifted VX. What's the best way to strap it down?
I'm gonna say axle straps on the back crossed over. On the front lower control arm crossed over with a chain on the front tow ring. Right now it's sitting just slightly forward of the axles hoping to achieve 60% weight in the front and 40% in the back.

Then how does one find the max weight an axle on car trailer is when the trailer is covered with rust? VX is 4000 so two axles together would be the math. Then the tire max weights together must be over 4000.

IMHO, you do want to compress the suspension. I don't like the CG of the trailer shifting as I'm driving. I know that others feel that you should not compress the suspension but I'm old school IRT towing. Whatever tie-down approach you use, adding wheel straps is good insurance.

Sorry but haven't a clue how to estimate max capacity of a trailer with no specs available. I'm sure that someone in your area (UHaul maybe) can give you an estimate based on spring size, hub size, receiver class, & other factors.

If you are going to do short trips, strap it down hard and compress the suspension for the reasons Tom mentioned. Use cross straps on the rear to keep it from walking around. I plan on towing mine for 10,000 to 20,000 miles so I strap the wheels with bonnets so as to not wear the suspension in one area. I made tie down points on the front and back of each tire. The trailer has a winch which I hook to the front tow hook and permanently mounted wheel chocks. The guy I bought the trailer from used just the winch and set the parking brake, yes there are people out there doing stupid things.
