View Full Version : VX partner car -- How many own an Eclipse???

I have once again read another post about someone else and their Eclipse. Its interesting to me how so many of us flock to the same type of vehicles. So I thought I would ask the question.

Who owns a Mitsubishi Eclipse?

I own a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT

Not only do I currently own an Eclipse Spyder, I had them since 1991, it has been 22 year addition to DSMs. But my first Mitsubishi was '86 Station, purchased for 1/3 of its new price in 1989. Their values used to drop unbelievably fast!

I bought my wife an 01 Spyder GT and sold it maybe a year after I bought it, to many issues with it. Not to mention how much of a PITA it was to change the spark plugs on that V6 engine. She now has a 2006 Pontiac G6 GT loaded and have been really happy with it.

P.S. My brother use to be into Eclipses before he bought his 91 MR2 Turbo, he had a 99 RS with a Hahn Racecraft Stage 2 turbo kit on it (big 16g turbo and FMIC), then he sold that and got a 98 GS-T with a fully built engine and a GT35R turbo, it made a tad over 600 HP to the wheels on high boost.

That's awesome!

Be sure to mark that in the poll too.

I was seriously considering a Mistubishi Starion/Dodge Conquest TSi at one time...is that close enough? I ended up with a 2nd gen. Ford Probe GT that I always thought had styling that was also ahead of it's time. http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/5161/ppuser/586 As a matter of fact, I still get people checking it out when I'm out and about, although obviously not as much as the VX.

The first car I ever actually ever financed was a '94 eclipse. That was a fun car. The only problem I ever had with it was one time when I went to pull out the cigarette lighter (with the light up housing surrounding it) and the entire assembly came out of the center console. Just like my VX....I don't think I ever drove that with the power option off.

Nope, never considered one actually. Closest I had was my '01 Cougar as my first car, then a crappy '03 Chevy S-10 Crew Cab (CarMax Lemon). Traded that towards a new '09 Nissan 370Z which I sold when I got the VX this year. I hope to find my 370 again someday and buy it back, it was that good!

First and only Mitsubishi I have owned is a Evolution RS 9 in WW only a 150 made. Researched the motor for six years before I bought one. It has been one of the most fulfilling cars I have owned. But its all VX now!!!! LOL!! Poor baby's now a garage queen!!!

DSMs stopped being sleepers in the mid 90's ;). That is when people realizes what they are capable of.

I literally have seen 40+ mitsu heads with bent valves, but this one takes the prize! Usually you can just swap the head and call it the day. What were you doing when the belt went? Did you try starting it? Ever figured out what caused it (often, it is caused by siezes balance shafts).

The engine was rebuilt by a reputable shop that specializes in DSM's here in Vegas several years ago, we had the Buschur Racing Balance Shaft Eliminator Kit installed and a few other small mods. It actually happened while my dad was driving it to drop my Niece off at school, it snapped from a stop sign, from normal driving. We, as in my brother, dad, and myself use the car as a backup, so we have been babying it... Just sucks its down when I need to use it! just a few weeks before that happened, I installed a new radiator too. But at this moment, it still looks cheaper to fix than the VX...

Sorry for the thread jack but Trekk mentioned his Probe GT, I had an '83 EXP GT Turbo that was one of the best handling cars I've ever owned with the comp suspension and Goodyear Eagle GT's. She cornered like a slot car...right up until the time that my then-fiancee rolled it! Talk about rare cars that nobody has heard of or cares about, wish I still had 'er! (The car that is, fiancee's long gone too...)

I dunno... I have mixed feelings. I HAD a 1990 Plymouth Laser (assembly line DSM cousin), 2.0 liter 5-speed. I was in love with the car for several years until one day I got a recall notice regarding a defective timing belt. Natch, I took it in and had it replaced. Things went downhill from there and less than 8,000 miles later the belt failed. I couldn't believe it. Fought tooth and nail with Chrysler and the dealer to absorb the cost. I won that time (and the next two times in less than 3 years). After failure number four I just threw in the towel and sent it to the boneyard. It was otherwise a great car, but that timing belt issue soured me on DSMs and Mitsubishis in general.
A dealer mechanic confided in me at one point and said he only saw this happen with manual trannies and that his brother-in-law had an automatic and this situation never happened to him. Go figure? Of course I'm assuming that Chrysler never upgraded the original design of the defective belt and just kept slapping the same crappy, unmodified part in each time it broke.

Leon R
06/16/2013, 10:06 PM
A little known secret: dealer mechanics are some of the worst hacks out there! Most of them work on flat rates and have plenty of jobs in line. That causes them to find shirtcuts and get really good at fixing cars FAST!

DSM timing belt is very tricky to do, most "normal machanics" screw it up. So dealer is better but they tent to skip certain steps. So I am not surprised when I hear about their failures.

But after mid 90's (after they went through couple of timing belt versions), timing belt hasn't been an issue.

Being one of the FAST and reliable DSMers, I can also laugh at those DSM stereotypes :)

I found all of mine to be reliable too:

93 - tranny replaced at 200K miles. I did have to replace the IAC (or sump'n to fix wild idle variations once too). Timing belt replaced once.

03 - started overheating at 150K but that was just a temp sensor gremlin I never traced down. Just turned on the AC if it temp started going up & the aux fan kept it from overheating. The black paint was FUBAR but I rekin that's OBE now.

04 - never been in the shop. Paint on the spoiler is shot though.

The 3000GT was a real lemon but it was a severely abused NYC car before I got it so I don't blame Mitsu.

No worries, J. I was actually replying to the frakkin' toaster. I shoulda quoted his post to make that clearer.

I think a poll thread for that would be kinda cool, but a 1:1 ratio of options to makes/models owned would probably be a bit ridiculous.

Yeah. You are right about that. It would be kinda neat if we had spreadsheet of everyone's vehicles that were listed in the "what else do you own" thread and then we could query that to get a report on similarities in vehicles. And then additionally, what is your "dream ride". I have a feeling we all have a similar "type" that we are in to.

Stock for stock, 3Gs could have been a bit quicker than the turbo/AWD 1Gs and 2Gs!

But... for under $100 and some knowledge, you could make turbo cars considerably faster! For another $500, they were in a different league ;)

Since this ability to be modified didn't actually help Mitsu Of NA, and if anything, made for more warranty claims, they dropped the turbo engine :(.

Tell them the truth!! These things are a modders wet dream!! Just add some drag radials and about 5K in mods and you will see why Vipers and ZR1's refuse to line up next to you after you hand them their lunch, did a Test and Tune in SAC Raceway and The Leman's Club showed up, they lined up twice and got humiliated so bad they put the real deal ZR1 and a Viper up! Guess what! Its on Youtube under TNT SAC. Here's the ZR-1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj3mjgjDW9k I had to run by myself after that nobody would line up next to me! That sucked!! They have been giant killers for awhile, not bad for a fourdoor sedan with a usable trunk. I should borrow my sisters old baby seats next time to really mess with their heads!!! And my car is actually slow compared to some of the other normal builds!!! Just a everyday grocery getting daily driver!!! Now I drive my VX everyday, I can't help it!!! I am a total 4G63 and AWD fanatic, so you will not find me near an NT Eclipse ;). Take the extra time and buy the real thing!

On a related topic, my AWD Talon is almost ready to go on the market...

Going to check out a GSX tomorrow at 3. Pumped! Can't wait!
