Hi all!!
Took my 2001 VX on its first big road trip of 2 hours highway driving down to the NJ shore area!
As stated my gas milage was 18.7 mpg in my stock truck. I'm running 40psi in the tires. Will check the milage on the way back also.
LQQking to establish a baseline for this stock truck mpg on the highway and then see what I get once I start the mods.

BY THE WAY .....I LOVE MY TRUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

18.57 on hiway trip this weekend. Mods that effect mileage: Supercharger, cold air intake, PV catback, 285/55/18 AVS-ST. I get 10-14 heavy footing it to work.

Do keep an eye on your tire pressures, with 40 in stock rears it will get tail happy if fronts lose pressure.

Reminder - anything other than stock tire size will affect odo, speedo and consequently mileage calculations.

I have the biggest tires a stock VX can take and my mileage hasn't improved perceptably at all. I get like 13 if I'm really lucky. Or would big tires make it look worse than it really is? Maybe I'm getting better than I think. What size tires are you 18ers sporting? Stock?

Bigger tires will make it look like you have worse mileage. Consider this - if the new tires are 1.2x the circumference of the stock tires, then when the odometer thinks you drove 1.0 miles, you will have really driven 1.2 miles. So, if you calculate you are getting 10mpg, you are really getting 12mpg. Without doing the math, I doubt that your tires are anywhere near 1.2x the circumference of the stock tires, but you get the idea.

The odometer is based on the number of rotations. In one rotation, a larger tire will cover a longer distance.

If you're basing your mpg on the odometer with bigger tires, then you're really getting better mileage than you think, because you've gone more miles than your odometer reflects. The amount of gas used obviously hasn't changed.

With 265/70R16s I usually add about 3% to my odometer when calculating MPG.

Also keep in mind that treadwear and inflation also affect the diameter of the tire, stock or otherwise, and will affect the odometer accordingly.

Moral of the story: use a GPS for MPG calculation. ;)

According to my GPS, 70 indicated on my speedo is actually 75, so add appx 7% to my mileage figures. 18.57*1.07=19.87

That sounds about right, John.

Assuming tire size measurements are somewhere in the bounds of reality (unlikely, I know):
(285*.55)/(245*.60) = 1.066

I just got done with a 4.5 hour trip. 311 on a tank . 16.36 mpg. best I've seen . Usally getting 13 in town and 15 on the highway. Stock everywhere. I didn't go over 80 mph , took it easy.

I dont get it!

Why isn't jim.LR>AR getting closer to 18-19 on the highway if he is full stock?

I mean I cruised at 65mph to get my 18.7mpg with 40 psi in the tires on flat highway

jim.LR>AR, you up and down hills and running into head winds?

A few weeks ago I drove from Tucson to L.A. and back. I got betwwen 19 and 21 mpg doing all highway driving averaging 65-75 mph (except for a stint in Pheonix where traffic was backed up and we never went over 40). This is running 31" tires and a lift.;Dy;

Hi Raque!!!

That is a 10-4 Good Buddy!!! I'm driving the highway like I have Miss Daisy in the back!!!

But not to worry about me, around town I love to "Feel the Power" and drive the VX like Luke Skywalker driving a speeder. I'm getting no more than 15mpg!!

Wait till I do my mods...then I'll really eat up the gas!!!!!

Regards!!!

I must feel a lot more power than you :naughty: cause 15mpg is about my BEST mpg on the highway, around town I do more like 10 - 12 mpg ;eekr;

Oh well, I guess I would have bought a diesel V-dub if I was really interested in gas mileage!
