Have a '99 that one of our customers wanted to remove the poor running 3.5L for a more popular motor to source parts for. Bring on the GM Performance 5.3L E-ROD! GM 4L60-E Transmission! GM Performance Supermatic Controller! Advance Adapters to Jeep Dana 300 Transfer Case! Retain A/C, Power Steering, 4WD, pretty much everything other than TOD. Still in fab process, but will update with photos as the progress continues.

Thanks for the support. Its actually going together really well compared to the troubles and lack of information we had found online during our research. So far, we really have just had minor trimming here and there, welding here and there, and lots of creative thinking in the bathroom! (best place to think)

OMG, this is amazing and great news!!! If (maybe when) the day ever comes that our OEM V-6's decide to die (and oftentimes they do), this gives the rest of us VX'ers great hope that there is still another option out there besides just the standard OEM V-6 replacement/rebuild. Plus, the side badging can be simply "flip-flopped" to read 5.3L on the side of the fender (brilliant)!!!

Please take very copious notes and detailed records/pictures during your V-8 build, so it can become "routine" in the future for any follow-on VX's that want to follow in its foot-steps. Perhaps VX'ers can ship their dying VX to your shop in Aberdeen, MD and leave it in your loving hands for the complete V-8 conversion and then have it return shipped back to their home state. Your shop would quickly become known as THE only place to have a professional V-8 upgrade conversion done on a VX (much like Hennesy Motors in Texas is famous for engine performance upgrades).

It seems poetic that you guys hail from Aberdeen, MD which is also where the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Grounds is located. You guys are "proving" that the VX can have a V-8 and have the expertise and knowledge to make it a worthwhile venture without the normal snafu's. Thank you for all you do and giving us VX'ers a professional V-8 option upgrade!!!

We have a customer that had one of these when they first came out and fell in love with it. He had a chance to buy another one and ship it overseas to where he now resides, but wanted something more reliable. After some research and different options, and coming across an ad from GM Performance in our bathroom reading material... it all just kind of came together. It has actually been a really fun project. It has a bit of Silverado, a bit of Dakota, a bit of CJ, a bit of H3 and of coarse a little bit of Vehicross! And for anyone looking to do this swap, once we are done with the build and working out the bugs, we will be more than happy to answer all the questions and point you in the right direction!

In the meantime.... more pictures coming soon!

Hi,

I've been in obsessive-research mode for about 2 months now on this topic. I just have 2 questions (for now) :)

-Would it be easier to go pure 2WD and go straight back to the rear diff?
-Why did you choose 5.3 instead of of any of the other LS 3rd/4th Generation engines (5.7 or 6.0 Liter), especially if you have already chosen the 4L60E?

Thank you!

Whats going on guys, I live out in Oregon and I just bought my first vx. I bought the car already planning on doing a v8 swap because I had a trooper a few years ago and know how weak these engines are. So I'm trying to basically figure out the best way to go. I see you guys went for the gm 5.3 but I was thinking more along the ford 5.0 and not sure what trans would a t5 fit? The dana case will be a definite. Also I would ideally love to keep TOD, I heard you can keep it if you use a smaller displacement v8, like a northstar or the oldsmobile 4.0. So what do you think is the best route the star or the 5.0? Thanks a lot.

All the wiring, ECM, TCM, etc is being ran and plugged in. Flex-A-Lite radiator, Derale slim dual-stage fan and hoses from an H3 hummer are being installed for the cooling system. More photos to come as we switch out the mock a/c compressor, alternator and power steering pump for the new ones. Transfer case and adapters come in the beginning of next week.

great work guys. keep it up and going.

My question is:
1. is it cost effective to do this swap ? cons vs pros ?

...my VX is dead. engine is well, but tranny is a toast. would love to do this swap and keep VX running.

Correct, planning two-speed fans pushing air instead of pulling.

SlowPro48
07/26/2012, 02:36 PM
Actually, considering they're going from a 75 to a 90 degree V, and four holes per side - it's not as tight a fit as I was expecting. Nice work! Seems like the devil will be in the electrical details though. Getting the guages to work, etc. Or maybe all that stuff was "harmonized" in 1999... I guess the A/C is easier to integrate on a '99.

Does Maryland DMV have an I&M program? If so how much red tape is involved in an engine swap? Is this the first fuel injected V8 swap? Need a personalized plate that says FIV8VX#1.

Very interesting thread.

Will post more photos as I can. With everyone taking their vacation times, project vehicles get worked on a little slower. The Dana 300 transfer case and billet adapters are in, and working on larger transmission mount at this moment and we want to modify the controls for the transfer case a little more to look factory. As far as motor mounts, we used the TransDapt biscuit mounts and welded in place of the old mounts. Photos to come as soon as I can.

With such beefier love going into this VX, I'm surprised nobody has brought up suspension yet... I would think that you probably need some tougher shocks/springs to keep all this v8 goodness from causing too much under-steer/wobble and whatnot that another few hundred pounds all the way up front there would cause.... Any plans to upgrade suspension as well??

Scott Larson
09/20/2012, 11:16 AM
Nope, not the transmission, that's aluminum; the transfer case hanging behind it. That actually helps to bring the center of gravity back towards center mass. You're correct though in that the suspension may need some addressing...time and miles will tell!

So... say I want to get this setup but I don't feel like paying $7500 for a new engine. What totaled vehicles should I be looking for that hold the same engine/tranny?

Ok, so I found that Taho's and Silverado's have the 5.3L v8. But E-ROD? What's so special about those?

evillecutter
09/20/2012, 12:48 PM
i cant wait to see this thing done - should have an extra 100hp and extra torque to lug that weight around (in a straight line at least) - supposed to be good on emissions too - in my opinion the vx should have been around 300hp to begin with

Ok, so I found that Taho's and Silverado's have the 5.3L v8. But E-ROD? What's so special about those?

Specifically, the E-Rod they are using is the L33, available from these vehicles:
2005 to 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD
2005 to 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD

E-Rod is sold by GM Performance
Here is their site:
http://www.chevroletperformance.com/e-rod.jsp?section=overview

The E-Rod package includes pretty much everything to get the engine running.
They also have a very appealing (but way expensive) LS3 6.2L option. It's the same physical size as the 5.3... but I believe cost is the reason nobody goes bigger than 5.3.
I've done a LOT of research into LS engine choices and have come to the conclusion that when it comes to cost vs. hp, the Generation 3 5.3L is the most practical and economically friendly choice. Also, all Gen. 3 and 4 LS engines should pass emissions requirements regarding year of engine manufacture, since the LS1 (Gen. 3) came out in '97.

Let me know if you have more questions on this... I've learned a lot in the last 9 months that I've been searching and would love to share. :)
(PM me...)

HeckaTrebeka

I've done a LOT of research into LS engine choices and have come to the conclusion that when it comes to cost vs. hp, the Generation IV 5.3L is the most practical and economically friendly choice.

Ah, yes! I keep forgetting to ask about economy... what do you think would be the gas mileage when applied to the VX?

SilverBullet75
09/20/2012, 02:51 PM
Sorry, when I said "economically" I meant wallet-wise.

But to answer your question:

If a 2001 Z28 Camaro has a curb weight of approx 3600 lbs, and our VX is approx 4000 lbs... and the Z28 has an LS1 (5.7) with commonly boasted 26ish mpg (other forums)..... then I estimate about 21-25 mpg with a 5.3L in the VX.

That's just pure speculation using sorta-similar variables. The real way to find out is to ask the other forum members that have DONE it, like Wisdom.
WISDOM, PLEASE INSERT YOUR EXPERIENCE! :)

SilverBullet75
09/20/2012, 03:06 PM
Also, just to qualify... I'm just a guy with ambition to learn and hopefully soon begin the LS swap process myself.
Not a guru or expert by any means. Just want to help.

As of last Saturday, they had everything taken back out (engine, tranny, transfer case) so that they could tweek some of the mounts & fully weld what had only been tack welded in place.

His immediate plan of attack was to make some clearance for the exhaust & figure out where to position the airbox.

It's gonna be really sweet ... & a real sleeper. She's gonna look 100% stock ... till you pop the hood!

Suspension and Brakes are going to be minor upgrades to Rancho shocks, stronger torsion bars cranked up, and Drilled/Slotted rotors and cermaic brake pads, possibly the steel braided lines. Being that this will eventually be shipped overseas, we want to keep the parts accessible to the customer if they ever have a problem.

I have a question for the builder: On the first page of pictures you show one where you have ground away the corner of the steering gear in order to get clearance. Was there not enough to move the engine 1/4 inch to the passenger side.??? When you dropped the engine in and positioned it - did you spot weld the motor mounts then unbolt and lift the engine in order to do a more permanent mount of the mounts to the frame??? Just curious. Eb.

Ah COugh!! ....cough.. gag inhale.. ;ooy; I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for an engine swap today. :)

I'm not surprised at the cost. I bet the hours spent are way more than a person would think. If anything, I'm surprised at the condition of the starting specimen for this type of investment/project. The undercarriage rust LOOKS horrible. It makes me think frame-off-restoration -- before starting with the engine transplant.

Obviously, it's not QUITE that bad...but a bad enough I wonder if the owner didn't consider selling/buying a lower-mileage...or, at least, lower rust unit? Maybe that's the norm in the NE though? I'm in the midwest and own a Florida truck. Seems like FL would be pretty bad with salt-water and such. But my rust level can't be 10-15% of what I see in the rear undercarriage (and engine compartment) pics.

Would LOVE to drive a V8 VX though! I'm thinking 383 stroker with ZF6 transmission!....then one in my vette of course! :bgwo:

I've been wondering if a Jeep wrangler 4.0 I6 and transmission wouldn't be a decent fit. I know the HP is less but most VX's are probably running on the same HP more or less with worn out engines. ?? The 4.0 lasts forever and are easy to find.

Yes, if you gents had started with a better "donor", this thing would have come out like a Chip Foose product! What I'm particularly encouraged by is that now you have a "template" - the next VX 5.3 transplant will go SO much faster, easier, and better; prolly cheaper too!

95K miles on my little Bumble Bee - 99% rust-free high desert VX with near perfect paint and interior. Runs like a top now - 1 quart/5K miles - but the day WILL come when this rascal is on its way to Maryland for a transplant - yes please!:bgwo:

I've been wondering if a Jeep wrangler 4.0 I6 and transmission wouldn't be a decent fit. I know the HP is less but most VX's are probably running on the same HP more or less with worn out engines. ?? The 4.0 lasts forever and are easy to find.

I'm guessing that an inline 6 would be waaaay too long to fit in that confined space without stretching the nose outward. Not sayin it couldn't be done but the V8 is probably actually easier.

I don't know Tom, you could probably move the engine backwards and make a nice cup holder out of the engine cover. No need for heat either. ;)

$250+ for new emblems was just not a priority for the customer any longer, and the condition of the emblems would not have allowed for removal and reinstallation of them. The alternative was clean them up and touch them up with paint.

With new tires and the motor needing to be broken in properly, a burnout video was just not the best decision at this time, even if we would LOVE to see what she can do. Perhaps the owner will shoot some footage for us!

This was a fun project and we would love to do more to it and make it more aggressive and an off road beast! If anyone is ready to do the conversion on theirs as complete as this build, call us!

Feel free to like us on Facebook as well, and view the photo album on there. We will be adding more photos and videos as we come across them.

Now I'm not saying this as a joke or to try and fool you, but a co-worker who has been working on motors for over 30 years swears by taking the engine through every RPM that it's capable of so that the rings seat properly. This is what keeps the motor from having oil leak issues down the road.

With this information presented to you, you can now think about how you're only helping your customer by burning out. Plus, you don't want those new tires to be all slippery. ;)

Okay, here's the very best solution of all:

Use some professional grade Decal Remover and a hard rubber spatula (so as not to scratch the paint) to only remove the "3" and the "dot" characters from each side fender, leaving the "5L" remaining in place (then it will be quickly finished to perfection without spending an additional $250). Having only the "5L" will be sufficient.

Nope, it won't work. If you go back and re-read AutoPro's post #203 above, they basically stated that the removal and reinstallation of the same old number emblems are much too deteriorated for successful reapplication and would not likely re-stick once removed. Brand new emblem sets cost $250 and that was the reason they were not ordered by the customer/VX owner.

Consequently; to save spending $250 for a brand new set of emblems, the best solution is just to only remove the "3" and the "dot", while leaving the original "5L" remaining in place on each side fender. Ka-pisch???

For those in question, the customer wanted to replace ALL emblems, hence the price tag. To just replace the front fender emblems and leave the old rear quarter emblems would have stood out like a sore thumb. So the customer chose to leave well enough alone. That, and the turn around time for emblems was not quick enough.

Nah; it just needs to have the finishing touch performed and have only the "3" and "dot" emblems removed, and leave the "5L" remaining in place on each side fender. Five minutes with some Decal Remover, and it would be finished to perfection displaying only the "5L" emblem.

Oh, don't get me started on Overhauled/Foose... I would rather BURN my VX to the ground than let Foose Foock it up! I cringe every time they unveil one of their projects. Foose tends to remove some of the most distinctive details from his cars. He would probably remove the fangs, flatten the doors, "tighten up" the lines on the cladding, trim the "horns" off the headlights, and scrap the TOD system. I nearly died when I saw that he had removed the Dagmars from the front bumper of the '57 Chevy they did for SEMA last year. It just looks naked!

Just doing the e-rod motor, trans, transfer case, adapters, drive shaft, wiring & programming... you are probably in the area of 20-25K. This build is also getting a/c, suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, audio upgrades, lighting upgrades, tires, intake and exhaust, and more... should be around 35K when he is done. But until all of our numbers are in, this is a guess-timate.

I will be putting pictures up today as the intake gets completed.

Here you go. Very few people would invest that much money into $5-9k car...

Finally, the number we all were waiting for. As I digest the future of the VX, these sorts of conversions will save the survivors. I think a lot of VX owners know that, and a few are willing to admit it. For the mechanical equivalent of a "new" VX, the $35k pricetag is not at all alarming. Think about a generic new 2015 Jeep Rubicon at nearly the same number...Which would you rather have? I'll take the GM V8 VX...sooo cool!

What would be an ideal donor VX for the sequel here?

WormGod
02/27/2015, 07:16 AM
Understand though, that $35K for conversion is NOT a restoration. No rotisserie and frame grind/paint on this bird. The key word here is "conversion". Me personally, I would consider a full resto if I were going this distance anyways. That honestly is a ton of money for a convert, so it is best to plan ahead what you want/expect. :)

And give or take a few grand for this convert for things like stereo system, suspension, brakes, etc. that you may not necessarily need that were done in this situation.
