So I hope I do not offend any RAV4 owners but I was at the mall and a guy pulled up to me checking out my ride. He wanted to know what my VX was and I gave him the scoop on my 99. He liked the look of the VX but killed me when he said it looked like his RAV4. R U KIDDING ME?? Lol. I let him down easy and said the only similarity is that they are both Japanese. The VX has its own look, period.

One of my coworkers calls mine a Tracker... disgusting! :(

Of course, I have never actually had anyone brave enough or maybe care enough check out the vehicle or actually ask me what it is. No one checks me out :( :p

It was just last night, at the liquid emporium...that a young fella asked me all the same stuff, then said: "I thought that was a suzuki"...:rolleyesg

I said: "Isuzu"

He said: "that's what I said"

I said: "No, you said suzuki"

He said: "Oh yeah, I guess I did...aren't they the same?"...:uhohgray:

Oh don't be so sensitive, there are obvious stylistic similarities. How many two door short wheel base SUVs with plastic cladding running half way up the body are there, anyway?

im pretty sure the rav 4 was copied off of the vx when the first vx was unveiled at an auto show in japan as a concept in 1993 - the first rav 4 came out in 1994...

Beyond the obvious, the VX is a premium vehicle, the Toyota is an economy model. The VX was a limited production hand-assembled concept car come to life, the RAV 4, just another mass-produced Toyota size-option model. The VX was homologated and won major rally segments and classes, I don't think the RAV has ever even raced, really. The VX was a Japan car of the year '97/98. The RAV4 never won even a booby prize. (Cut and paste this note on your dash for future reference, for when these wanna be's come round.)

Same thing happened to me...

At Autozone the guy at the register looked at my VX through the window and said, "thats cool, is it a rav 4?" :rolly:

Some people are clueless and they apparantly work at Autozone.

Mine has never been mistaken for another make or model, but I've been asked what the hell it is many many times.

People who know what it is respect it. People who don't know what it is but want to know appreciate it. People who think they know what it is but don't? Well, they just proved their ignorance about two vehicles and their opinions are useless to me.

Mine too has never been confused for something else. I have had pictures taking with it. people circle it. Ask if it is still made. I even had the local teriyaki shop owner bring all that worked there out to see it and interior. haha. guess i should wax it more often

I don't see why you guys are ragging on the RAV4 so bad... IMHO a two-door first-gen RAV4 is a pretty sharp looking vehicle and shares many design cues with the VX. It's just not AS good looking or powerful as a VX.

One thing I'm curious about... did the first-gen RAV4's have AWD or 4WD with a true low range transfer case? I see a mix of AWD and 4WD on Edmunds and Wikipedia, with one article even pointing out that the drive system was lifted directly from the Celica All-Trac.

I was shopping around for one a while back , and I only came across AWD and FWD models according to the VIN#'s .

And here is one with an All-Track motor swap!

HA! I met a guy waiting outside a convenience store a couple weeks ago who asked some questions. He said, "My buddy was telling me how these were based off the Tracker." I told him Tracker was from another manufacturer and the VX was closer to being a Trooper. :)

I would completely disagree that the VX is similar to the Rav4 in any aspect of performance....
And dont get me wrong... at all! i miss my VX and cant wait till i can get another, but i can see where they are coming from.....there are some similarities, the headlights kinda have the same slant, and its a smaller sport SUV...

Jo,
I concur. I would rather explain what it is than someone calling it something it is not. Lol

Some time ago i was waiting for my girlfriend who was buying some stuff @ this CVS pharmacy in manhattan on 34th street and 7th avenue and this guy saw me standing near by approached me saying : "Oh,nice toyota !!! "

I didn't say anything, but looking at the CVS pharmacy sign my thoughts were : Some prescriptions do in fact causes side effects

I get "what is it?" all the time, especially when I go downtown. Sometimes yelled from open windows of cars next to me at lights. I think 3 people total have said "nice Vehicross" (including a guy at a Starbucks drive-thru) but then this is Colorado :D

One woman outside Home Depot was wandering around my VX when I came out then started asking me all kinds of questions about it. She loved it (too bad she wasn't single or attractive) but her last question was "where can I get one?". To which I replied "1999". She went away dejected.

Then two guys at the carwash (Octopus on Colfax if you're in Denver...best for the money anywhere) ask me what it is, I tell them, then one of them says "we were just trying to decide if we like it".

I told him "why should I care whether you do or not?". I did not also point out that he works at a car wash. He shut up and gave me my receipt lol.

It's never been called a Rav-4 though.

I'm glad you didn't. Thank you. I personally don't want that kind of negative public relations associated with the VX possibly affecting it's resale value to the general public. It seems we VX owners are already our own worst enemies in that regard sometimes. :p

I didn't actually think you did so I was joking too, although given some of the people I've met in Evansville, it would be understandable in some cases. :bwgy:

This is so awesome because you were both rude and dismissive of a low paid employee who should have known not to share his thoughts with an actual truck owner! Stupid peasant laborer.

Oh the fuss. The two guys in question were the ones who wander up and down the line of cars waiting to be washed and ask which wash you want, and then give you a receipt and already think very highly of themselves. They handed me attitude so I handed it back - and I am betting a lot of people on this forum would have done the same, but whatever.

As I said the actual working folks at the Octopus do a great job and I tip them every time.

Ask yourself what you might want to own if the VX crapped out and you couldn't own another. I have.

Rav4 was one choice in the hopes it might be more economical. And, the mid-year models even had something like a spoiler with two doors. It really does look about the closest IMO. Hard to blame someone else for assuming that.

People are afraid to show their ignorance, so they say RAV4 to seem quasi-car knowlegable and protect themselves (their egos), that's the effect you are seeing here. That's all. It's like when people see my boxer dog and say isn't that a pit bull , but of course they wish to be corrected. Help these insecure people out....educate them, tell them the VX story, with pride, and word will spread, and your truck's value will go up. Help them to be more discerning.
