I was just doing a little research for future projects and decided in now need a roof top tent. :)

Surprisingly, I found a picture of a VX with a roof top tent on cartopcamper.com. Anyone here?

This is the only pic I found...

I'm considering a VX for overland travel and plan on getting a Ezi-Awn rooftop tent for whatever vehicle I settle on. It's great to see someone that's already done the roof-top-tent thing with the VX, because my immediate concern is vehicle weight capacity. Granted that can be beefed up with better springs/shocks...
That's really encouraging to see. :grino:

I wish there were more pics of the VX with the roof top tent because im curious to see if the tent sticks out over the sides of the roof rails. Too bad the mysterious VX owner never chimed in.

It's a great idea but probably works best with a bigger vehicle. That goes for the tent and overlanding.

I would love some pics if/when you have them.

Overall, how is it for weekend camping?

Yeah overhang is my concern. The tent I have picked out is 55" wide.. ;eekb;
Like I said, I'm evaluating the VX's viability and this might be a problem.

How wide is yours, fredrick_remington?

aould be the roof top rack capacity. My rack says 150 pounds. I lost 100 pounds in the last year and I am still more than that. Any weight for the equipment would just be adding more weight.

Well any roof tent requires at the very least some serious rack reinforcement, if not an entirely new rack. That's just a factor of having a roof tent installed properly, not to mention any spring/shock upgrades I plan to make gear carrying easier. My concern is the tent being too physically large for the vehicle, not too heavy.

I just bought one for my trooper. They are pretty neat. I found a awesome deal at Inland4x4. They were selling them new for $799, normal price is $1499. Its branded TJM but made by the same people as the ARB tent.

This one looks like it would be more suitable for the VX considering that it is on a rav4?

Personally, I've been eyeing the Chaser (http://www.adventuretrailers.com/chaser.html), but they start at $7k, and cross the $10k mark pretty quickly once you add all the goodies.

Anyway, that same company also sells rooftop tents. They might have some input.

Actually the weight limit sticker says 110 lbs, which would include the
10 lb OEM rack.

My set up comes in at 115 lb....so I'm over.
25 lb - Yakima Loadwarrior
28 lb - OEM 18" rim
49 lb - NTG 285/60
3 lb - locking hook
110 lb TOTAL

The weakest link in the equation is the part of the roof rails where the metal bracket hooks onto.

Is there another way to secure/attach the roof tent?

Strange, I haven't been on here in months, since internet on an Aircraft Carrier in the Gulf is really slow, but I was lookin at these tents today to kill some time! I am doing a trailer mount though. Something I can pull behind the VX or Trooper and haul gear on top. Very cool!!

Awesome trailer, but after putting on a tent and other accessories, it would cost far more than my VX. Not really an option for me:(
I am looking at something more like this:
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11752397&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3960|51276&N=4041978&Mo=0&No=0&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=51276&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US

I can probably build it for a fraction of the cost, maybe on the rear end of a trooper chassis or something.

I am all in on the trailer concept. If you have to move the VX, either to go wheeling, or to the store or for weather or any reason, you have to pack up your entire home. A trailer on the other hand, you can just dump, no crazy change in center of gravity, easier to store and what not. No worries about structural integrity and the list just keeps going. I can't think of many pros for a roof top tent other than it looks cool in the campsite and you save a few bucks.
