View Full Version : Recommended Image Hosting site?

I've tried PhotoBucket and ImageShack and both have frequently locked up my browser at random times, have to kill Safari and restart it. ARGH!!!! :_brickwal
I've tried Picasaweb too, but didn't like how slow it was at loading pics.
Any recommendations for a site that doesn't bomb out on Macs?
Found this list, but it doesn't even list "Picasaweb" so I don't think it's very thorough.

Have you tried the Nikon site? Better quality also.

No, embarrassed to say I never heard of it....and I'm a major Nikon-head.
Major company with a reputation to maintain, and specifically list a version for Mac....sounds like the right choice!
Just registered, going to play with it now...thanks Billy!

Why are you using Safari instead of Firefox or Chrome? Picture websites are always going to focus the majority of their testing efforts on the larger browsers, and fewer than 5% of internet users use Safari.
Personally I'm a big proponent of storing your VX images locally on the Vehicross.info site. That way if you or your picture hosting website disappear, your knowledge and contributions remain.

6 yrs as a Mac owner, I'm used to Safari being wayyyyy in the minority and not that supported.....when I went Apple, I went all the way.....
I had so many problems with malware, spyware and other crapola repeatedly on my PC, despite having all the "recommended" safeguards, that I went this way to drastically reduced my odds of having those problems again. In fact, haven't had any problems to date with that type stuff.
So, the negative about Safari is there are still many apps that don't support it because it's only a 5% market, yet, the positive is that hackers aren't as interested in it for the very same reason.
I do use Firefox when I have to, but prefer Safari. I routinely have 30-40 windows open at the same time, so I'm really using my new quad processor! It does slow down and get a bit hinky when I have too many in history, so I have to clean that out and reboot....and I'm cookin' again.
Did I mention I'm a bit Type A? :slap:

Did you mention this to the ImageShack tech support team? LOL

Um, I might not have mentioned that...oh that's right, I didn't even call tech support. :_thinking, um, is dat a problemo? :mbrasd:
My hubby routinely harasses me about it....:rollo:...I can't help that some of us can think in 30 different topics at the same time.....and some can't...:p
Oh and on the Nikon site, my very FIRST upload I got a pop-up window that said "An internal error has occurred. The dialogue box will close"......
um....crapola...so I clicked OK, it stopped the upload at that point. It missed 2 pics of the 6, so I just re-uploaded them, and it proceeded normally.
However, when I tried to upload 6 pics at once again...got same message. Everything went find when I only uploaded 2-4 pics at a time. But it didn't lock up and/or screw anything else up so that's a real positive for me.

That was next up on my list to try before Billy mentioned the Nikon. I'll still try it. It's been around a while now, and with Yahoo backing it, it may be supported (maybe even for a MAC )

KAT,
I've been using pbase for a few years now. My only complaint is that it's gotten too expensive based on the number of pix I have uploaded.
Benefits:
1. you can upload loads of pix at once if you zip them
2. it saves all your camera settings if that's important to you
3. in 3 years, I've only seen the site down once
4. viewer comments available but not a distraction
5. to share with others, you can send them a link to the picture, the gallery, or your home page
6. allows viewers to DL your picture in S,M,L or original sizes but you can also disable right clicking if you want.
Shortcomings:
$$$

I use SmugMug after switching from Phanfare.
I really like it. It does exactly what I need it to do.

JAMAS-
I saw SmugMug on that one list...might look into that too. Nikon site has a lot of click here , click there, click click....(and yes I'm Type A and I want it to be quicker! :p)

No matter what you pick, make sure you keep your own backup off site. My bro-in-law was paying for one of the services and they lost all of his photos. Their reaction, "Bummer."

True dat! I have a separate hard drive just for backup,it backs up at least 4x/day, AND I have all my pics on zip drives as well (all 15,000 of them)....stored in our safe. So I have 3 places, hopefully that would be safe.

Well, they are, after all...stored in a SAFE...

I just wish I had learned a lesson from my bro-in-law. I'd been storing things on the designated space with my internet provider - one day they were gone. They stopped offering that service but didn't offer any advance warning. :upsetgray

Before I lose what little sanity I have left, :goof:
can somebody PLEASE tell me how to copy the pics from MeowMix's Moab pics album in Photobucket to my Photobucket account?? :_brickwal
I want the actual files, not just a link to them.....
I tried downloading it (as it shows how to do it)......but it keeps saying I've already downloaded it within 24 hrs and can't do it again unless I start process all over....
So I started over....same problem....:_thinking
I tried dragging each pic over to my account....
I tried emailing it (under Share function)…all I got was a link TO her album, not copied to mine.
I tried the "share" function...only offers to send email and/or the link code.......see above
Can't figure out how to direct it to UPLOAD pics FROM her account to mine...
I don't use facebook or twitter so that's not an option.
HELP!!!! :flower:
:thanx:

Unfortunately the easiest way photobucket has is to FTP the files in and out. The downside, is you need a pro account, otherwise they put all these limitations on you that makes it difficult/hassle downloading...
http://support.photobucket.com/entries/21105606
Have you decided which hosting you are using?
I do prefer picasaweb over all of them, they do have a standalone app that you can download that helps a lot in organizing and then you can sync to picasaweb... The upside for me using it, is all picures I take on my phone is auto-uploaded to picasaweb so I always have a backup.

Kat: I too am a Nikon & a Mac junkie.. much like driving my VX, I refuse to lay my hands on the pc that's in my living room.. lol.. unless it needs tech support because it's dying.. or whatever else issues pc users have.. I find that running Chrome browser seems to be the best.. I can't stand slow safari.. even firefox makes me nuts.. too slow.. if you're finding across the board that websites in general are ALL seeming to have issues, reboot (shut off /unplug-wait 30 seconds plug back in) routers & modems or whatever web access you have. For instance, I find about once a month chrome on my mac starts slowing way down, pages won't load for what seems like eternity.. error logs, all the bs.. I reboot modem & router that's wired to the PC (Im wireless on my MacBook) and it's triple speed and runs great on any website..
As far as websites for hosting photo's only.. I use a few, I am a freelance photographer, and I tend to use caution when posting gallery worthy photo's just anywhere.. so I guess it depends on really what you're looking for. Large amounts of storage space? displaying a few great pic's? selling them? all of the above? I use photobucket for daily snap shots not worth $$.. cafepress for selling.. copyright protected..

I can't help with the online transfer, but... how 'bout going a little lower tech? Mail MeowMix a cheap thumb drive (of appropriate size, of course) and ask to her copy her original files onto it and mail it back in a self addressed stamped envelope. ;)

Thanks Adam, interestingly, after I started this thread back a few months ago, PhotoBucket has NOT bombed on me, so I've continued to use it.
I did use picasaweb for a little while...think I was running into storage space problem...maybe I'll revisit it again.

Thanks fellow Nikonite & Mac-ee.
My quad processor does the same thing you described, Safari slows down after I've not rebooted for about 2 weeks or so. So I have to reboot, turn modem off/on and the wireless Airport also clears. But I've also found I have to clear my history and that maximizes the speed.
I've never tried Chrome....maybe I'll look into that.
My needs are: large amount of storage space, lots and lots of storage space. I have over 18,000 on my Mac now, and over 2,000 on PhotoBucket as of now. Nothing for sale.
I know...:mbrasd: my fingers are dirty, cuz I use a pc, but I don't have to coax it into the mood... :smilewink
Coax it?....my quad processors are on 24/7 awaiting my commands! :laugho:

Well, I have to admit, just today, hubby suggested the same low tech method ....I replied....pphhffft! :rollo:
I'm quite sure my Mac can do anything!!! ....if just the operator could do the same....:goof:...:slap:
I think I'll even do it a little easier way....MEOWMIX....can you please EMAIL all your pics to me? I'll email you! :flower::flower:
Maybe break it into 10GB or less per email? :thanx::thanx:
As I've been once again bitt'n by the photo bug over the course of the summer, I'm wondering if there is any interest in either prolonging this thread, or starting a new one.
It would be a thread dedicated to posting links to, & examples of, whatcha been doin' with your clicky thingy & the associated glass that fastens to the front of it...in whatever mount you prefer:yesgray:
(I have some old M42 glass adapted to Minolta/Sony mount)
I've got stuff on both flick'r & the bucket.
