Soo... I spent yesterday afternoon (about 2 hours) at my new girlfriends house and I come out to find slashed tires :bgwb::bgwb: what fun! anyways I was running 265/75/R16's and I liked the size but I kinda want something bigger, if you guys think my unlifted VX could handle it. Im looking at new tire brand/types if anyone has any suggestions or reviews on the ones im looking at that would be great!

Tires im looking at right now:

Kuhmo Road Venture MT KL71 265/75/R16's

Dick Cepeck Mud Country 265/75/R16's

Yokohama Geolandar M/T Plus 265/75/R16's

------------ ------------- --------------

Kuhmo Road Venture MT KL71 285/75/R16's

Dick Cepeck Mud Country 285/75/R16's

Yokohama Geolandar M/T Plus 285/75/R16's

General Grabber AT 2 285/75/R16's

Wow... does the new girlfriend have a hostile old boyfriend?

Of your choices I'm partial to Yokos.

Some people just suck.

It was probably VX envy.

I was thinking the same thing...on both counts.

I have Geolanders all-seasons' on both my summer and winter rims and have no complaints about the ride they provide. I wouldn't mind a little more grip in the snow though, and M/T's would probably be the answer, but so far the A/S's haven't left me stranded so I'll most likely just stick with what I have until it's time for replacements (or someone wants to swap).

I also really like the Yoko's. I also think the Cepek's look friggin awesome. Just saw some 35's on a lifted Wrangler today. The sidewall looks killer.

I'm a Yoko fan as well...running Geolander A-T/S and love them...:bwgy::smilewink:bgwo::bgwb:

Man, that's crazy....hope it doesn't happen again...

I like Yokos too. just put the Yoko Geos A/T-S on my GX last week...pretty decent, moderately aggressive A/T tire.

The Kuhmo is ranked 3rd and the Geo M/T 7th in TireRack's survey for that category (Off-Road Max Terrain). I wouldn't even put the General Grabber 2 in this same category as the others. "Marlin" had them and I recall he commented he kept piercing the sidewalls when on trails.

Here's the TireRack survey, may want to read the comments, see what owners say about all the ones you're interested in. Those really gnarly mud tires can get pretty loud on the highway after a while.

I had the Yoko Geolander M/T (not M/T+) and they were loud as hell on the road. Yes, they looked awesome but they absolutely ROARED at speed on pavement. That was the only thing I didn't like about them. Perhaps the slight design changes to the M/T+ have helped out a bit, not sure. The current shoes on my VX are just as aggressive and much quieter. I do like the Yoko's, but that's just my 2¢.

This is a cool site. http://offroaders.com/reviewbox/showcat.php?cat=3
but you might consider making sure they ain't going to get slashed again.....before you buy but on the other hand you can't roll until you buy. Hmmm. might consider having the girl come to YOUR house. :) I almost bought those Kumho M/T's but I thought they would just be too rough for everyday driving.

Regarding the tire choices, all I can chip in is that I had Cepek's on my last 4Runner. They absolutely rocked in mud and dirt, but they turned to hockey pucks when the temperature dropped much below freezing.

This was a few years ago though so maybe they have a better all season formulation now.

Thanks for all of the input! :bgwb::bgwb::bgwb::bgwb: yea I cant roll without new ones. Im just gonna keep an eye on the car from the window for now on. I also have the top of the line Viper alarm system which includes proximity alert/motion sensor that I just havent gotten installed yet, probably should get it installed now. Also, do you guys think the larger size (285/75/R16) will fit without a lift?

Tires im looking at right now:

Kuhmo Road Venture MT KL71 265/75/R16-119/116Q = 53 lbs each

Dick Cepeck Mud Country 265/75/R16's = 55 lbs each

Yokohama Geolandar M/T Plus 265/75/R16's = 47.4 lbs each

On a "non-lifted" 100% Stock VX, the largest O.D. tire that will fit without modification is 32" O.D. Thus; using 16" rims, the largest is typically 265/75R16 (31.8" O.D.).

If you would like to run 285/75R16 (33" O.D.); then yes, you will have to lift your VX (cranking the front TB's as a minimum) for clearance for both tire width & tire height.

You should also be weary of individual Tire Weight and try to keep your next tire near the 45 lbs mark as a maximum target weight to maintain good braking and MPG. All of the tires you listed on your "wish list" are exceedingly heavy in individual tire weight.

If you plan on using your tires in the Snow, then you should also consider those tires that have the Snowflake/Mountain (S/M) rating.

Here are couple of alternate suggestions that are both lightweight and S/M rated and will fit on your non-lifted VX:

Dunlop - Radial Rover RVXT in 265/75R16-114S (31.8" O.D./40 lbs) with 14/32nds tread depth and is S/M rated. Fellow VX member "HiredGoon" has this 16" model tire on his non-lifted stock VX.

G/Y - Wrangler DuraTrac in 265/75R16-112/109Q (31.8" O.D./45 lbs) with a super deep 18/32nds tread depth and is S/M rated. Fellow VX member "PittVXr" has this 16" model tire on his non-lifted stock VX and has pictures in his Photo Gallery.

Based upon your desire to have an aggressive looking tire, I recommend the G/Y - DuraTrac.

These are the exact tires I have (although I also have a 1" lift). They are excellent tires and not too noisy on the highway. Although I have not driven them in snow yet...give it a couple weeks >.<

Edit: My rims are 17" though, so my tires are 245/75-R17, which are listed as 50 lbs and 31.5" OD on Tirerack.com

I just ordered a set of retreads from treadwright.com they ride awesome are treaded on toyo open country. Since they are retreads they are much taller I got 265/75/r16's and they are a 31.6 inch tire. Ride smooth and love them so far have a great treadpattern and awesome warranty. Plus cheap!! 510 for all four shipped! Posted some pics on here they have some way more aggressive versions than the ones I have too. Check um out.

also how wide are your rims? 285's wont fit on a 7 inch rim??
Ususally 265 is about as big as you can safely go.

We look forward to hearing what you finally choose!!! Still, my #1 pick for you would be the lightweight G/Y - DuraTrac in 265/75R16-112/109Q (31.8" O.D./45 lbs) with 18/32nds tread depth and is Snowflake/Mountain rated. A word of caution when shopping: There are two(2) G/Y DuraTrac versions available in this size, so be sure to specify the "112/109Q" (service/speed rating) version as it is the lightweight model that weighs only 45 lbs (see www.TireRack.com for clarification). Lastly, please check-out the Photo Gallery of "PittVXr" and see them for yourself on a VX!!!

I've had the Goodyear Dura tracs for 2 winters and I can say they have been excellent in the snow. I like that they are not too loud on the street either. I would buy them again in a heartbeat.

Congrats on getting the Treadwrights. I'm happy with mine in 285/75/16. Yes, the DO sit taller than normal don't they? But just look at that tread. Its deep and hard as hell.

I'm not familiar with your tread pattern, it wasn't available for me at the time. The Toyo carcasses were an option but I specified BFG. Dunno if that matters much. What load range are yours? Just curious.

I got the e option I believe the heavier load option. Road noise is not even noticeable and tread pattern is very aggressive but still more of a all terrain road tire. I put on a decent amount of miles daily and wanted something that wasn't to noisy but will still handle the snow and mud when up for some fun.

From the pics, the tread pattern sure looks like a Bridgestone Dueler Revo. Great tire.

Shoot those were some good tires I sent you!

Sorry that happened, what you had them just a month or so?

- I have always liked Geolander MT
- But my next purchase will be from treadwright...they are the old Wrangler MTR tread.

It's all about your personal risk tolerance I think. Riff will swoop in and tell you that you'll be just fine, and there are certainly enough members here that run 285's on their stock 7" rims with no problem, but you are correct in that the manufacturers don't recommend it. Personally I wouldn't do it, but then again I have an infant and a 2 year old in the VX all the time now (Axiom engine is having an issue) so I don't want the risk of a separation at speed.
