Did you look into the aftermarket high flow cad converters? Pretty sure they are under $500. And you might pick up a horsepower or two!

Just did a quick search and found several high flow brands ranging in price from $150 to 295 (stainless steel).

A lot of them have platinum in them as part of the catalyst.

Here one that I found...not sure of the Cali shipping though.
Andy's auto sport (http://www.andysautosport.com/isuzu/1999_2001_vehicross/performance/exhaust/catalytic_converters/) carries several. (they also carry smoke screen and flame thrower kits :) )

Magna FLow lists this one

2000 3.5L LEV; D/S-P/S YSZXT03.52JK UNIVERSAL CATALYTIC CONVERTER 45105 $692.50

Thats MSRP so you might get one cheaper, I see them advertized on the Web for less that $200.00

Not a "William", born a Billy, but thats okay!:bwgy:

Sounds like you need to take a trip across the boarder into Arizona to get your Cats! Phoenix is a short weekend trip that would give you lots of options. With the trip you get a little vacation and still come out way cheaper than that $1300 price tag!:yesy:

Note to self... never move to California...

Sorry Junky. :(

I lived there as a kid and would never go back. Going back to visit is bad enough...I hate the overcrowded everything! Only thing I miss is the beach.

Sorry Junky. :(

My '82 Mustang is a California car, so it came with special emissions equipment. When I replaced the engine about 10 years ago, I installed all new intake/carb and a complete cat-free dual exhaust, BUT I kept all of the original intake/exhaust pieces. If this car ever goes back to California (which is what the original owner has been promising for...oh...six years), he will need to re-install all that crap to get it even near passing inspection. The original air pump and vacuum lines are still installed and are a nightmare to work around. That emissions check is what has him too scared to return it to Californication.

I put on some magnaflow high flow cats, paid about $125 each. The entire system with cats, muffler, resonator was $900 with labour.

http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic_converters/02product/displayuniversal.asp?universal=54305

But being in Cali, you have a whole section for you:
http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic_converters/02product/displayuniversal01.asp?catalogid=48843&universal=45105

So assuming half off MSRP, roughly $300 each....

Mine lasted about a year or two. Some of the mesh interior blew out the tail pipes. Some of it ended up wedged in my resonators and caused some vibration noise for a week until it broke down.

I don't get any CEL from the O2 sensors.

But I would pull all that junk off. It costs power and as you said gets in the way. Easier to sell and buy another 82 in Ca. It's not like the 82 was a special model.

THIS '82 IS special - It was purchased new by my then brother-in-law, sold to my other (now deceased) brother-in-law, before coming into my ex-wife's possession. It's sentimental value far outweighs it's monetary value, which is why I am willing to GIVE it back to him --free! All he has to do is pay to ship it back to Cali. I might just re-install the original intake and exhaust since I don't drive it much anymore, and the headers and dual exhaust tips are both rusting externally. (sorry for the thread jack.)

Oh, yeah, the 1982 model was the first to have the 5.0 HO engine - The slogan that year -- "The BOSS is back!"
