Hey gang,

New-ish member here... I joined up last year as I prepped to get my '99 Astral Silver back on the road after a few years in stir.

Anyway, the refurb engine's in, she's back on the road, and I'm a happy guy. Didn't realize just how much I missed this thing!

Anyway, to the point - I've got the OEM Wing Bar setup, and the vertical Mighty Mounts and the Powderhound ski rack, and was looking for a good solution for mounting two bikes up there when there's no snow to play in.

I didn't have the foresight to buy the horizontal Mighty Mounts 10 years ago, and thought I was SOL after a recent search. But the guys at a certain online rack store advised me that the universal-fit bike racks Yakima's putting out now do the trick.

So drunk with optimism, I bought THREE Yakima Forklifts on speculation that I could shoehorn 'em up there and IT WORKED! No fuss, no muss, no Mighty Mounts!

The outer two are oriented normally and pushed out to about centimeter from the towers, and the middle one reversed (so the back tire faces forward). Tossed all three MTBs up there this past weekend, to test them and lived to tell you about it, so I guess that means it works.

There you have it - if you're in the market for bike racks but light on Mighty Mounts, there really is a solution out there.

Happy trails!

Good to know and congrats on getting your VX back on the road!

Thanks, Tri.

Should also mention that they were criminally simple to install and required no tools whatsoever. The "jaws" of the clamps that mout to the bars have three notches from which to choose, depending on the style/width of the bar. The MIDDLE slot should be used, as that setting fits our Wing Bars like a glove.

I'll get some pics up this weekend.
Cheers,

Might throw the part numbers our way also if you have them to make it easier for someone to search for them. :)

Good call, Tri. I've copied/pasted more than one part number from this forum in the past!

It's the Yakima ForkLift Rike Rack (Yakima Part Number - 8002098). I got them from an online rack store :winky: for $125.10 each, free shipping.

Ciao,

I am looking for 2 of those, but deeply discounted *lol*. I found one in Minny for $60, but the guy wouldn't ship it.

Not the biggest or brightest, but they get the point across. If you're asking yourself, "gee, can I really fit three MTBs on my VX roof," then here's your answer!

Cheers,
-V
