View Full Version : My baby is leaking!

Everyone told me to watch my CV boots after lifting my girl, so I climbed under her today to look at stuff, and something is leaking grease everywhere! I'm definitely no mechanic, I have no idea what this part is...can someone tell me if it's just a gasket or something that needs to be replaced? Did I do something terribly wrong and now some serious damage has happened? I'm kinda freaking out a little...I've never broken a car before.

photos arent showing up.. but if you download the shop manual from the downloads section im sure you can find a blow up view of the front end so you can pick out your part thats leaking

Looks like your rear diff is seeping a little at the input shaft. Doesn't look serious, just a little seapage. Can be fixed if it bothers you.:yesy:

got them to open, thanks sue.

Kat, thats the seal at the front of the rear differential. Mine sprung a leak when the breather tube on the top of the differential got clogged. if you look on top of the round part of the differential you will see a rubber tube going straight up to the frame and then topped with a white cap. my cap was getting stuck and causing pressure build up in the differential, causing that seal to leak just like yours. i removed it all together and put a $10 "breather filter" from pepboys up there and have had no problems since

That is the rear diff pinion oil seal leaking.
PITA to replace unless you understand the preload adjustments to the pinion bearings.
I'm afraid you need a mechanic for this one.
Or a friend with mechanical knowledge.

Just keep an eye on it if you have to drive for a few weeks before getting fixed, and check the diff oil level each week.

Hopefully it will just be a faulty seal, and not worn bearings.

Good luck.

Wow - 5 responses while I typed. You guys and gals are on the job today.

Boo. This doesn't sound fun to fix...I hope mine has the same problem as you etl, because replacing the seal doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun. I guess I'll be calling some of my more mechanically inclined friends tomorrow to see who they would recommend I take my girl to. :sady:

...and sorry about the photos; I tried a new imagehosting site, but I guess it didn't work out so well. I need to figure out how everyone is getting all this image space on the forum, so I can just upload here.

...I don't know how to check a diff oil level.

You have 2 caps on your rear diff. One is low on the diff...this is the drain plug. The second one is about 2/3 of the way up...that is the fill plug. With your vx on level ground remove the fill plug. Fluid should be about level with the drain plug...you fill it until it srarts to spill out then it is full.

How many times have I warned you about trying to think???

Better off leaving that to the experts.

Doesn't the rear diff get some kind of limited slip addative in the fluid? Someone? Anyone? I ask because if the fluid is low then you will want to put in more fluid, but also add the right amount of addative to get everything to work right.

I recall when I had my shop change my diff fluids, Royal Purple diff fluid said no LSD additive was needed, as it's formula handled it.

Yes, I have always used RP and never used LSD, its in mix! LOL

Well, all of that is fine and dandy if you use Royal Purple. If not, you'll need to see if the stuff you use has the addative in it, or if you need to add it.

I would hate to have a leaky rear end. You should really have that looked at.

Yes, most synthetic lubes do not need the LSD additive. Read the bottle carefully though to make sure.

If you are just topping off for a small amount of lost fluid, then there should be enough additive still in there. If it's more than about 1/2 quart needed, then I'd probably add it.

Also, some synthetic lubricant manufacturers recommend not mixing with melted dinosaurs (petroleum based). Read the bottle to make sure.

Thank you all for your advice! ;Dy; I'll have to locate a shop to replace that seal...one of my buddies wants to do it for me, as he's currently in mechanic school at the local community college, and he's a big 4WD offroad nut, but that still worries me. On the other hand, I could get hands on with my girl and help him fix her. Not sure what I'll do at this point.

I'll have to look into that royal purple fluid. I've been meaning to use royal purple oil in my girl too, it's just so freaking expensive! ...and I don't work at that silly auto shop like I used to, so I don't get discounts anymore :righty:

I'll keep stuff posted on the progress of the repair; I'm thinking the VX will be hanging out in the driveway for a few days. I'll steal my mother's Enclave if I need to go anywhere, lol.

...and next up, I suppose I ought to figure out that new reverberation noise I gained with my lift. :_thinking

For parts give St Charles Isuzu a call and ask for Merlin. Tell him you are a member here and get 10% discount and free shipping. I have found that even without the discount he is the cheapest for oem parts.

I made an appointment with one of the driveline shops in town, so I'll let them do their thing on Thursday and just not worry about it myself. I'm so worthless when it comes to just about anything mechanically, lol. :laughy:
