If anyone has pics showing their rock rails/sliders welded to the frame...

..I'd love to see them.

I'm making some up right now...looking for some pointers!!

I know crappy weather makes it difficult for some..
..but if ya can....a pic or two showing where on the frame ya welded them would be awesome.

I've got my ideas.....just want a second/third/fourth opinion.

Many thanks

Can't help with welded but look in my gallery for bolt on. Might point you in the right direction. I have more pics if you need them.

Thanks guys..

Billy...I was looking at doing three mounts to frame.... Have you had any problems with just the two?

What does Stic9 charge for those ones...and do you know if they are available ..NOW!

Thanks mate

These are the same sliders that I have as well. Mine have been modified to be removeable during the winter months in CO since they fill up with slush and make a mess in my garage.

Have had no issues with the two mounts...they are gusseted well. The problem with three mounts is you can't push the rear one back any further or it interferes with the suspension links.
Unfortunately Stric9 is no more. If you are looking for someone to build some for you you might give Dallas at Stinkyfab a call...he does some very nice work and is near you.

Here ya go BroJo

And you owe me BIG for laying out on the cold (38 deg) hard concrete this morning...:smilewink

Never mind about all the rust & durt...:rolleyesg

As Billy mentioned, the rear mount does make a little contact with the lower link when you stuff a wheel, but not THAT bad.

One thing you NEED to be sure to do though is make the mounting plates large enough to spread the load on the frame. The original set of stric9 sliders were built for another local VXer and the first time we went out with them we thought they bent. Upon inspection we found the frame walls had "coke canned"...the latter incarnations were made with larger mount plates and help prevent that.

Thanks again to you all...

Pretty much got them all drawn up now, all the pics really helped.

Gonna make 'em next week.

Pics to follow...and I'll price them up as a comparison to others.

These don't look like they offer much protection. probably lighter and cheaper though. :bgwb:

Thats kinda funny.....

I use cardboard to get the correct fit for building boxes out of wood.

So I guess it goes -- cardboard < wood < steel < Shaq

Jo, are you doing the bending and welding?

JoFotoz
04/25/2011, 02:36 PM
If all goes to plan....

Jo, are you doing the bending and welding?

...there will be no bending.

I will cut and prep all the square tube, gussets and plates...

...then a pro welder is gonna stick it all together.

At least thats the plan!

Ah, gotcha! Thought maybe you had invested in a tube bender and welder...and I was going to have to come spend some fab time in SD! ;)

Tube bender and welder are on the wish list!!

The square stock I'm using is easy enough for me to cut / mitre / prep etc.....

...but a pro welder seemed like a good plan for this, especially on the frame!

Sorry if I'm being Captain Obvious here, but,
Make sure you temporarily space the lower rail from your frame seam with something solid during placement. Its a PITA if the slider hits your frame over bumps when it's too close. Mine is a tad too close on one side, so during winter, ice gets wedged in there and makes some noise. I can think of a few rocks that could have pushed them up a few mils... Anyways, like you have to worry about snow.!

Good luck!

The major advantage of "pine sliders", is the fact that you always have a ready supply of firewood if absolutely EVERYTHING goes horribly wrong & you become stranded on the trail...:yesgray:

They are kind of reversed relative to many I have see...with smaller square tubing running down the body seam and the larger rectangular tubing hanging a little outboard for 'edge' protection.
Three mounting points to frame.....two beefy ones...and a less beefy, but but still STRONG one, tucked up under bar pivot at rear.
Plates were put on frame to disperse heat effect of welding, and for crush strength.....tubes to frame were 'gussetted' for added OOOMPH !

Going to coat them in bedliner...and beat the h*77 out of them in Moab!

Look good Jo. But...it's going to be a beeeeeatch to sand the surface rust and paint them. Doesn't look like a lot of room to work on the tops (might just be the camera angle). I would just use flat rustoleum...they are going to get scratched...easy and cheap to repaint.

looks great jo. They look identical to the ones i built on the Runner, except with some 'prettier' welds :)

I am running into the issue now that they have been on there for about a year and i am getting some rust on he upper side thats right near the body of the car, now i cant remove them to touch them up. Im going to have to come up with a way to get them off.....OR, even better yet, a 3" body lift would help me access them :naughty:

All ya need to do is...

Reach on up there with some sand paper or a sanding block/sponge dealio, brush on some rust converter or primer, brush on some bed liner or undercoating/rust bullet...DONE!

It don't have ta look purdy, we're not tAk'n it to the fair...:smilewink

...paint stick wrapped in sandpaper gets "up & in there", and a sanding sponge works well as Dub says.

And hey, if I make 'em look prettier than me, they'll still be UGLY!

dubski, if you can efficiently sand mine, i would be a very very impressed guy. they are just about touching the body...

Plus, if not, this gives me a reason for the 3" body lift and 35's to make sure that i can get in there to paint them :naughty:
