Im telling ya, please look for the Axiom motor. 280hp, smooth power. quiet, responsive, and lower chance for siezure. Use your original intake.

280? I thought the 04s had 250 with direct injection, and all the rest were the same as the VX. I thought the DI heads didnt work with out VX computer anyway, so when re-using the factory stuff and just using the Axiom block, its more or less a direct swap, just with better quality control/tolerances to help with oil leaking

What's the difference between a long block and a short block in this context? I though all Vx's came with the same engine more or less.

you get more parts with a long block than you do with a short block. It's still the same motor.

long block equals heads/cams etc installed, short block is just the block with crank/pistons/rods. Long block would be easier to install because you just put yuor valve covers on, intake manifold, hook up electrics etc whereas short block you have to put the heads on, set the timing, etc etc. And your rigth about the axiom motor that swaps right in being virtually identical to the VX's. The 250hp version was direct injection and is not a direct swap.
