View Full Version : Mystery black goop.. what is it and where to get some?

I'm sure you've all seen it before. Its a tar-like black adhesive that stays flexible but supplies a firm bond between most materials. Its not permanent, but very firm.

I need some to install semi-permanent items. Its not black rtv silicone. Its very malleable, easily rolls into a ball even after years of aging. Very sticky stuff.

Any names for this product and sources?

You talking about the stuff that holds the weather curtain on the inside of the door panels?

Grif

Bob, never seen the stuff in the door panels, but my weather curtains were torn out by a PO in lieu of dynamatting the whole dam vehicle.

Butyl rubber

Hrrm... butyl rubber eh? Just doesn't seem to have the same properties.

I first encountered the stuff as an adhesive for aluminum speaker grills on Radio Shack Minumus 7 speakers. I know ppl in this forum MUST know what I'm talking about. Ldub... I think he ran Minumus 7's for a bit.

Ah... I think I know exactly what you're talking about. My dad had a roll of it stashed in the garage, both now long gone. It had a paper liner that you peeled away. Unfortunately, there were no other markings on it.

In other words, glad to be totally useless to you. :(

paper release...thats the stuff, there's no stick-um on the back , its just to prevent it from touching itself....usually the thickness of an 'abba-zabba"...it can be stretched, paper thin, but smoosh it to itself and it aint commin apart...we usually use it in construction, but ive seen it used everywhere

Go to the plumbing department at Lowes or Home Depot. They still carry it but I can't remember what it's called either. I picked up a roll a few months ago.

Yah, it's used for sealing drain pipes (really you can use it for anything you can get a full wrap on & isn't under pressure). It sticks to itself REEEEEL good but not much else.

try white cap, grainger, or a roofing supply yard

navistar

It's by 3M and it's called Windo-Weld Ribbon Sealer. You can use it for window glass sealing, attaching the plastic dust cover between the door and the interior door panel, attaching emblems, etc. Usually available at auto parts stores that sell auto paint and auto body repair supplies.

I know exactly what you're talking about, & I'm still using the gutted min 7 enclosures as my rear speakers.
I remember Chopper referencing it in a post in the long ago, but can't remember if it was beautiful rubber that he was talking about. Seems it's commonly used in body shops...maybe shoot him a pm.

for the 3M product(Navistar's product, not tar like or tacky on the surface)...clean then heat the area with a hair blower prior to installation, should get the best results...butyl rubber will require an adhesive (rubber or contact cement) on the surface you're adhering it to................Grif,
what you described, is butyl rubber

That is NOT the stuff I was thinking of. What I was talking about is a small roll of tape but may be made of the same material. If it touches itself, you'll never get it apart.

I think ive seen the mechanic at my work use the stuff your talking about to seal off a few things ill ask him what it is tomorrow and if its "Butyl rubber" as well, id have to say thats the stuff.

Grif
04/13/2011, 06:13 PM
Well the stuff I need definitely needs no adhesive, it IS adhesive. It sticks to pretty much anything, just needs a little pressure and it sticks.

Went back to Home Despot and looked again, no joy. Guess I'll try Lowes tomorrow. Sadly, searching thier websites for "butyl rubber" reveals nothing of the stuff I'm looking for.

I think I remember a cable guy used it for sealing underground splices they made, so see if you can talk to one of them if you see one.

Perty sure this is it: http://www.filmtools.com/butyl.html

Looking at the MDSS its listed as Architectural Glazing Tape.

The site itself describes it thusly:

Black Butyl Setting Tape is an all-weather preformed joint sealant made of Butyl rubber material in a flexible 5/16" square rope form. Butyl was originally used to seal window glass into autos, special effects technicians use it as a source for small flames. Butyl comes with a plastic coated protective release paper that removes easily. Reusable as an adhesive.

Yeah, I think thats the stuff. Now to find it locally.

I Touch Myself ...The Divinyls

I love myself I want you to love me
When I feel down I want you above me
I search myself I want you to find me
I forget myself I want you to remind me

I don't want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself
Ooh I don't want anybody else Oh no, oh no, oh no

You're the one who makes me come running
You're the sun who makes me shine
When you're around I'm always laughing
I want to make you mine

I close my eyes And see you before me
Think I would die If you were to ignore me
A fool could see Just how much I adore you
I get down on my knees I do anything for you

I don't want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself
Ooh I don't want anybody else
Oh no, oh no, oh no

I want you I don't want anybody else
And when I think about you I touch myself
Ooh, ooh, oo, oo ahh

I don't want anybody else When I think about you
I touch myself Ooh I don't want anybody else

Oh yeah! I never put the two together, but this might also be the same stuff -- or at least similar stuff: http://www.coaxseal.com/. It comes in a much smaller roll than the stuff pictured above, but otherwise seems identical. It is a stretchy, sort of sticky rubbery goo, separated on a roll by paper. You can mold it around anything, but it remains stupidly sticky and will get on everything and pick up every piece of dirt it gets near.

This is what the mechanic at my work uses to seal all kinds of things on his vehicles.

http://tinypic.com/r/29zam36/7

Its called A/C sealant or something like that, if you want to buy some NAPA auto parts online sells it and the part number is 209491 type that in the search bar and you will find it.

Yeah my friend in the A/C buisness always has it on him....

And if you google butyl rubber monkey you will see the nickname i was talking about...they just happen to use the word dung instead.

...are y'all talking about 3M strip caulk? That's what I use to seal around speakers, secure broken plastic panels in place (like my door handle), etc. It'll seal just about anything -- you can find it at Napa. :happyface

I found a random photo of it online: Is this what you're looking for?
