While the wheels were off today having Kumho's fitted i noticed both outer CV gaiters were in 2 pieces and grease is starting to get spread around...

Well the "how 2" section suggests this might be a job I cold tackle or at least have a go. So has anybody found a UK supplier for these at reasonable cost...

Cheers

If you can't find any over there, rockauto.com has a wide variety of cv boots some of which are just like the mechatech boots you hear about occasionally, and some that are just like stock boots. They are all very reasonable. If you can't order them direct to the UK, then let me know and I can forward you some.

Are they not the same as a SWB Trooper?

Just incase you need it confirming I fitted standard Trooper boots of the same year to mine no problem.

Believe it or not, there really isn't many sizes of CV boots out there. The axle shop that worked on mine highly recommended Dorman but LittleBeast had bad luck with them. MechaTech seem to work fine for most people but you should be able to get some from a local auto parts store. Just measure the diameter of both the outer race & the shaft & when you go to the autoparts store, have them pull the one for a Trooper. If the 2 ends measure close enough, then you'll be fine.

Talk to Bob at drive shaft UK. They supplied my CV's with all new boots etc so they must do them seperately. http://www.driveshaftuk.com/

The job is a bit of a pain! will be messy and you need the tool for expanding the boot over the existing CV as you cant get the CV off without breaking the ring clip.

PS ... what are the chances of getting them over without a tool... or making a "tool" out of 1.5 litre cola bottle...

:D

To be honest i couldn't believe that there was a tool that did it, those things are tough!!!! i have enough trouble getting it up the shaft (oh er misses) but maybe some hot water to soften it up??

The Trooper boots I got from Milner were easy to get on and came with new fasteners. You end up with more than enough grease around to help them slip on to the CVs:grino:

Royal Exceed LWB ... so very heavy but ideal for carrying camping gear but nearly as thirsty as VX... it was fantastic in snow with my favourite Kumho KL71s

Yes the job is messy but you don't need the tool to put the boot on over the outer race (green cup). If it fit that tight, you wouldn't need the band. Mine just slid right on ... & then right back off. The only trouble I had was to keep it in place long enough to get some tension on the band.
