I wasn't sure if I should title this thread:

Bully Bar with offset from hell

or

Measure once ... cut twice

or

Don't be messin wit my hiney!

Not to worry though. I haven't completely lost my Engineering skils. The Bully Bar is for the RV, not the VX.

Are you bring this with you to the meet next weekend? Probably would save your @$$ (literally) when driving down I-95/64 through Hurricane Earl. :D

Nah.

95 between Richmond & F'burg is so rough, that I'd probably dig an edge & endo down the Hwy.

Last time we made that trip in the RV, it bounced so bad that the microwave oven jumped out of it's retainers.

HMMM - Rekin that would be a good starting point for a full exo-skeleton ... removable too.

Oooh, need the matching front bumper, and make some extra wide rock sliders that go out that far

RickOKC
08/30/2010, 05:40 PM
See, this is why I can't do custom fabrication. I could only have 2 feet of material, yet somehow it would expand to being 7 feet long and fit just like that just to spite me.

My fab skills STINK! LOL!

VX KAT
08/30/2010, 05:56 PM
Yeah, that's the ticket!.....make a matching one for the front, & the extra wide rock sliders, then it'll be like a hoop exo and you can roll on yer side and not even mess up your OFH or yer sheetmetal....so when we push you, er, um, I mean if you fall off a trail in Moab next year you'll just roll over and over ....just make sure Mr. Scary Hook is behind you so he can hook your exo and save yer butt.:bgwb:
ok, ok, let me take care of this for you....:slap:

ROFL. Y'all are killin me here.

Rick - I'm not the fab-meister on the bumper. Welder Guy did that one for me. I shutter to think what it would've looked like if I'd tried welding 2 seven foot tubes together. The only mod I did after he fabricated it was to cut off about 4" of square tube & relocate the receiver pin hole so that it fits closer to the back of the RV.

KAT - can I borrow your pirate kitty flag at Moab so Mr. Scary Hook can find me after I roll down the hill?

I haven't looked at it yet, but I warned him about the pervs that troll the site:) I can't hang out with him at all, that would be fraternization, but I told him I could offer him pointers when needed.

And to get us partly back on topic -

Wow, Tom - what size is your RV??
That bumper looks too wide for anything you could register on the roads here.

Rekin it's an optical illusion. It's a 32' Coachman that's built on a Ford dually frame.

The spec sheet for the 301SS is located here:

Now don't you go startin' up again and drag me across that line!!
I like his bumperette...and that's all that matters! ;)

I actually bought one for mine...but need to get the hitch installed first...but mine won't look as good, think it's goin' look goofy stickin' out all by itself.....at least he has that big spare tire stickin' back (hmmm, reminds me of somebody else's bright yellow truck with a big spare on the back :_thinking) and it kind of balances the look...mine will be just stickin' way the heck out there....I'm still not sure if I'm keepin' it....I like the other style bumperette from Go Rhino much better but it doesn't offer the 25mph protection. I keep thinking it's more important to protect my neck AND the back cladding....but logic rarely prevails over aesthetics! :rollo:

tom4bren
09/02/2010, 11:05 AM
Paint it pink ... it'll look fine.

BTW, if I put the matching bumper on front, this is the roll cage concept I have in mind (in the event of a roll over, just roll it back upright & keep goin).

It's a guy thing, you wouldn't understand.

I actually resurrected this thread for a reason. Where did y'all get those 'bumperettes'. I'm thinking that the hiney protection would be a good investment if Boy ever drives the VX to school.

Here's my new "bully bar" installed....
I ended up liking it a bit more than I thought I was going to...it's still kinda fugly, but it's useful since it can absorb some impact. It also makes a great step so you can get to the roof rack, CB antenna, etc much easier...

I don't have a bully bar on my hitch but rather an ultrasonic rear-view sonar array. Very batman. Its a collision avoidance system rather than obstacle destruction system. Works well as a poor mans rear cam and very sturdy to use as a step too! If it fails to warn, I'm sure I'll hear the crunch of the plastic fail which gives a tertiary level of protection... hehe

* Wired or wireless trailer hitch mount rear collision avoidance system
* Takes away the blind spot while backing your vehicle
* A loud progressive alert sounds from an audio unit inside the vehicle when your vehicle comes within 7 feet of objects and people
* Avoid injury to family member or pet and damage to vehicle
* Sensors transmit invisible ultrasonic waves that bounce back from stationary or moving objects as the vehicle is backing up
* As the vehicle gets closer, the alert beeps faster
* Audible alert progresses when you reach within 5 feet
* Audible alert remains steady when you approach within 3 feet
* Ultrasonic technology to help you detect objects that you are unable to see
* Automatically scans behind your vehicle to detect objects within your path when reverse gear is engaged
* Designed for almost any vehicle with a 2 inch or one and one fourth of an inch hitch receiver
* Sensor housing can be used as a step – 250 lbs max
* Locks into the hitch receiver
* 7-way connector plugs into vehicle receptor
* Includes 2-pin power cable for use on vehicles without 7-way receptacle

This pic shows a fair representation mounted to the Da'lan hitch.

Not sure where it came from, one of the previous owners must have installed it. I'm on the BB (training is super boring) so you'll have to flip through my gallery to find the pic, but there are 3-4 sensors mounted in the rear cladding. The control unit for it is installed in the tire iron storage compartment, and the on/off/volume switch is mounted on the passenger side of the center console.

Here you go Sue, I was wrong on the number of sensors, it's just two, which probably explains some of the inaccuracy. You can see them pretty clearly in this pic:

That's pretty cool VT, wonder if I could haxor my unit to install its sensors in the cladding. Seems like it should be fairly simple. Gonna look into it.
