Bob Barker

So I'm bored and can't make my mind up on which wheels I want... So here's a list if anyone wants to place a vote. They will be wrapped in thosd Treadwrights that someone made a thread about.

I had the cheapie black steel wheels for a while, and the switch to alloys made a huge difference... my vote (and Cece's too) is for the 3rd one down.

Yeah, those are called ATX chamber w/ Teflon coating. I don't know why Teflon but it looks really good. I would say those and wheel #5 (AR crawl) are my front runners.

I've been wanting a set of the 16" Pro Comp 8089 that JHarris has on some of the pics in his gallery, but those ATX Chambers are pretty nifty too.

Hey you will really want to check out tirerack.com....they have 16-20's on sale for as cheap as $59 for our patterns. I almost bought these ... http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/WheelCloseUpServlet?target=runWheelSearch&initialPartNumber=M12983B00BDC&wheelMake=Mamba&wheelModel=M1&wheelFinish=Machined+w/Black+Accent&showRear=no&autoMake=Isuzu&autoModel=Vehicross&autoYear=2000&autoModClar=&filterSize=All&filterFinish=All&filterSpecial=false&filterBrand=All&filterNew=All&sort=Brand

20 for $59 - but there is only 3 left when I tried to order.

Alright, who voted for the Gwheels!?!

I know more than one person can like a wheel set, but I wanted to be alone on my island and have it to myself!

I may look at the Crawl's (#5) since the finish is a matte black, could look pretty nice.

My vote is seven. When you really get a rim on a black one, that shows the inside black lip of rim, it is going to look real good. In my opinion way better than a rim that has a very full face. Plus it will be easier to clean (outside of Teflon).

Bob Barker
07/30/2010, 12:33 PM
What do you mean "get a rim on a black one"?

JHarris1385

You have ebony in your title?

Bob Barker
07/30/2010, 12:36 PM
Ah, now I get what you were saying!

Problem with the chamber pro's (wheel #6) is that the beadlock is functional, and I'm not sure I really want a functional beadlock to drive around on all day... Does that require a special tire to have beadlock rims or will any type tire work with them?

JHarris1385
07/30/2010, 12:39 PM

Dont look at my rims for reference. I bought them for about $80 each at one point when I needed something quick and cheap. If I had to do it all over again I would get black inner lip.

Any tire will work with beadlocks...nothing special needed. For road use a beadlock is not really needed (but won't harm anything). Where they shine is offroad...you can air the tires down uber-low for superior traction and not wory about losing a bead.

Bob Barker
07/31/2010, 02:29 PM
But those rims won't hold air without those bolts in probably... I'd rather not have to deal with installing/mounting tires on that. Seems like a PITA.

Check me if I'm wrong here Sandy, but...

Are the majority of bead locks DOT approved for street use?

I haven't done any research on it, just remember hearing something here or there...:_thinking

Bob Barker

Does it take a special shop to mount or know how to mount bead lock tires?

etlsport
08/01/2010, 07:45 AM
No special machinery required. A lot of times the rims have a bulge near the bead to keep the tire from coming off the other direction. This requires a fair amount of skill to mount so an offroad shop would probably have an easier time with it but I've done a set before at a regular old shop

Bob Barker
08/01/2010, 07:48 AM
That's good info. Thanks!

08/01/2010, 11:04 AM
My vote went for wheel #4 the 8 Holers. I just like the simple clean look.

Also most people I know that have bead locks mount there onw tires at home with basic hand tools.

Another note that might sway your wheel choice is to check the center bore. As I am sure you know (if you have researched previous wheel threads) the VX's hub is larger than most cars/trucks which can limit your choices.:yesy:

Bob Barker
08/01/2010, 01:23 PM
Yeah after reading some more I've started noticing a lot of reference to the hub size. I'll take that into account when I finally order.

Marlin
08/01/2010, 01:27 PM
One thing I regret, I bought aluminum rims. They look nice, and no rust, but they are so soft, and trail rash eats em alive. At least with steel wheels, I could just bang up back into shape:) I like the classics, or like billy said, the 8 holes.

Bob Barker
08/01/2010, 02:15 PM
Wonder if Teflon coate wheels hold up any better to trail beatings and mall parking block curb rash.

Triathlete
08/01/2010, 02:39 PM
The teflon coating basically just makes keeping the wheel clean easier. Just like teflon coated pans...the road grime in theory just hoses right off...if it sticks in the first place. Teflon is a fairly soft coating thats why you are not to use metal utensils with coated cookwear...so if probably will scratch easier. There are a few VXers on here that have the teflon chambers that might chime in on how they have held up.

tom4bren
08/02/2010, 05:30 AM
But those rims won't hold air without those bolts in probably... I'd rather not have to deal with installing/mounting tires on that. Seems like a PITA.

The threaded holes for the beadlock bolts should be blind holes. Keeping air in them shouldn't be a problem. If they are not blind holes ... run, don't walk away.

Triathlete
08/02/2010, 07:02 PM
The bolt holes have nothing to do (directly) with the wheel holding air. The way a bead lock wheel works is the tire bead is squashed between two plates which creates the seal...yes the bolts need to be tight to maintain this seal. If the bolts are properly torqued you should have no problems with leaking (as long as the bead locks are properly installed). Jay runs bead locks on his FJ which is his daily driver and afaik has had no issues.

08/04/2010, 12:42 AM
did you decide on a set ??

Bob Barker
08/04/2010, 01:56 AM
No... I like the thought of the chamber Pro's with the bead locks but I'm still not sold on them being right for daily driving duties. But it's close between those and wheel 3. I might look around a little for other designs too.

Is that a faux beadlock on the Chamber Pros or the real deal?

Aren't beadlocks illegal for street vehicles in some places?

Bart

Triathlete
08/04/2010, 03:18 PM
There are several beadlock wheels that are DOT approved and street legal. All others are for "race or offroad use only". However, I have never seen anyone get stopped and wheels checked for DOT approval. Most (99.9%) officers would not know the differance.

Not sure if those are real 'locks or not...would have to check their site.
***Just checked the site...looks like they are fake-locks.

I got these on tire rack for $79 each. $400 with shipping. It's crazy that they were cheaper than the tires I put on it.

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/WheelCloseUpServlet?target=runWheelSearch&initialPartNumber=6322983FB&wheelMake=Ultra&wheelModel=Magnus&wheelFinish=Flat+Black+Painted&showRear=no&autoMake=Isuzu&autoModel=Vehicross&autoYear=2001&autoModClar=&filterSize=All&filterFinish=All&filterSpecial=false&filterBrand=All&filterNew=All&sort=Brand

It emphasizes the industrial look of the VX. It's not that I like the wheels alone that much, but on the VX, it matches perfectly.

Tough to beat a light, (18" x 8" = 22 lb) strong, forged wheel, they're not the cheapest wheels out there, but they do have some models on "overstock pricing" as of late.

You had better check that out thoroughly.
IIRC, some 15" wheels don't clear our brake callipers, some do.

Also, to fit 35's, you will need a lift and some body trimming (easy to do though).
And of course, you need to check the offset.

Look out Tom4B, now that you have gone back to wimpy tyres, you might have a challenger for the supreme title of "OFH".

RamAirZ
04/24/2011, 07:37 PM
well some 15's won't fit and having a half inch less of sidewall is not that big of a deal, that is if you run 16's. I ran 16's and aired down to 10psi all the time in mine with 33's with no issues. Some guys run 17-18 and bigger but I'm not down for that on something I'll air down unless the tires are fairly large (Like a 35" tire on a 18" rim would be the same as a 33" tire on a 16" rim as far as sidewall essentially)

That combo would look great on a VX. The offset on yours doesn't look like quite as much as on mine but I hafta agree on the 15" rims. They look awsome.
