It's been a while since I last started a new thread in this forum, & since aquiring a set of 4:77's for both axles, I've done a bit of research on the subject of setting up differentials.
I feel that I've aquired a basic grasp of how to do it, but still don't know nearly enough to be diddling with the innards of the new set(s).
So,being the somewhat cautious type, I've decided to take them in to have new pinion seals & crush collars installed, & also to check the mesh pattern, though in theory, that should be good.
Maybe I'll have them install the locker & new bearings in the rear third too, just to be sure it's done right...:yesgray:
After I get the old thirds out, I plan on completely disassembling the front, to see if I can teach myself the finer points of proper ring & pinion setup.
The only downside with that will be the outlay of $4 - 500.oo in $pecialized tools. (dial gauge & magnetic base, in/lb torque wrench, bearing press, vice, etc.)

Yeah, I know...:luck: with that...:rolleyesg

Here are some of the more valuable resources I've found while snooping...

While none of these are specific to Isuzu with the exception of the last link, the general procedures will still apply, with Isuzu specific clearances & torque values substituted where applicable...:_wrench:

Well, if you get serious, I might be able to ship (loan) some of the measuring instruments. Was as a apprentice machinist awhile back. Maybe even sell some. Think my magnetic base is broken though.

Thanks for the offer John...You da MAN...

It'll be at least next yr after Moab before anything happens with this...at least that would be my best guess right now.

As I've grown older, I've also become more realistic with regard to my ambition levels & the laziness factor...:smilewink

Well I had a professional shope here in Houston set mine up for me. I bought the rebuild kit from Indy 4x and they replaced all of that for me, yet not even a year later the gear mesh is terrible and it sounds like a tank in the rear end everytime you let off the gas. Mine was setup good initially but it seems something over a few months of driving has gone wrong and I need to take out the rear 4.78 gears and have them shimmed or even rebuilt again :(

I have all the tools aside from the bearing press if you need em' (I just go down to my old shop when I need it). If you find another set of 4.77's let me know!!!!

That's a right generous offer Z, & I appreciate it...:yesgray:

But I somehow think that i'll be able to come up with a better solution than borrowing tools from my VX Bros on either coast.

Whatta great bunch...

If I hear of any more gears, you're second in line behind the guy that kept threatening to steal mine in Moab...:uhohgray:

He shall at this time remain nameless...who say's there's no honor among thieves...:smilewink

Wow, Dub, you are REALLY beasting ol' Suz up! Where did you score the 4:77s? We're they outta a RS?

I'm gonna take my roof rack off this weekend and park the Trooper in the garage for some more upgrades, including my Aussie locker for the rear.

Awesome! I'm debating if I wanna drop an aussie in mine yet. I do wanna find the 4.77's though, you can get the front's out of the later amigo's with a 4cyl, they used the Dana 44 in the rear though

Shouldnt you be fixing dents or something?

Those aren't dents, they're strategically placed speed dimples, like on a golf ball. They are all the rage, ever since Larry got his... :bgwo:
