:( Yeah, I have started cheating... she is only 17 but don't hold that against me as she'll be at least 18 before I start playing with her. :p
Say hello to my VX replacement that came in from Seattle several days ago - BOXY - my '93 Chevy S-10 Blazer Tahoe 4x4:

There is no rust anywhere!!! Check out how straight the underside is - I should be able to fab up a straight skid plate between the framerails if I choose.

Being the Tahoe edition it's a pretty decked out little box! It weighs about 3500 pounds in this form and has a 101.5" wheelbase.

There are no rips in the interior and everything is really clean for something so old. The HVAC system needs some attention since the only settings available right now are off and air at the feet. The cruise control also needs fixing and the console hinge as dissolved.

The quick fold rear seat is slick! I don't think I'll make a disconnect for it...

I can just barely lay down in here comfortably when the seat is folded down. Plus there is an actual tailgate! It's all in such great shape!

Being a '93 Tahoe edition, it came with the 200 hp high output 4.3 with lighter goodies inside the block. It's fun! Behind the 3/4 350 sits the stout 4L60E and decent NP233 electronic t-case (driver side drop). The only mods are a quick disconnect on the rear driveshaft and the removal of the front hooks and the addition of a stereo. I assume it was towed behind an RV for quite some time. The disconnect doesn't seem to operate anymore so I wonder how true the mileage is but the odo shows 184,000 miles.

I'm thinking I want to update the trans to a '96 because of the bolt pattern at the tail. To that tail, I should be able to bolt up a NP242 t-case from a Grand Cherokee to get 2wd, 4wd Hi, 4wd Lo, AWD, and Neutral. Grand Cherokee axles may find there way under there as well for better braking, solid front axle, driveshaft meshing, and more aftermarket options - plus I want to keep things lightweight. So I'll most likely run a high pinion Dana 30 front without CAD and the Dana 44 or Ford 8.8 rear for rear discs and matching bolt pattern. I want minimal lift and 33's and 4.56 gears. I'm dreaming of mods for now until I sell a couple vehicles and make room for cool tools! :yeso: Overall though, not bad for $1500, right!!!??? :)

Thanks Bart! After looking at the pics of the Patrol Beau PM'd me - I'm reaffirming my thoughts that my Blazer may be a bit TOO nice! I'd have to gut it to hang out with you desert cats and your sparce buggies! :smilewink ...Actually, I did consider a guttin until it showed up - I would rather leave it as is now.
I have SEVEN freakin rigs at my house - I need to purge the lot of them (including Zeus) and just focus on one project - the Blazer. The sad thing is I need to work on each rig before I can sell them!
Work HAS been pretty nutty lately - it seems I just about got fired for looking at a few of my favorite things on the puter. :D A few kind folks evidently came to my rescue, luckily. I gotz ta b a good boy from now on! :o However, I am no longer working on a God forsaken temple anymore but instead... I actually like the MNU Trucks. After I watched District 9 I promptly went online to find out more about the rigs.
Yeah, Justin. If the interior is clean and nice, don't strip it. I stripped mine because the floor and head liner weren't in the greatest shape. I just hope that when I find my RS it will have a nice interior. I really want to do a RS build eventually.

Ha ha! I’ve been cheating on my VX search lately. I think I was a little bummed out ever since my less-than-stellar experience of taking a trip to check out a POS, so to cheer myself up I finally ordered all the expensive Mustang goodies that I’d put off for so long. Kinda dumb - sure would be handy if I had that 2nd vehicle beforehand. Oh well!

Off (or maybe back on?) topic - did you ever consider a Typhoon?Actually, I did... very seriously! In fact, that is why I got the Blazer. I found a few Typhoons for sale and the best deals were on eBay. The cheapest one went for $5000 - it looked rough to me. A nice looking one stripped of it's cladding to look like a sleeper went for $5700 in Florida - I was soooo tempted to go for that one. Basically though, when I priced out a 4.3 turbo kit (also on eBay) for $1500 with all the goods it made sense for me to start with a lesser model for lesser money to start with. I also saw how low the intercooler was and figured I was asking for problems taking something like that offroad. OH - and in my threads, whatever happens - I don't care if we go off topic for a while at all.

Awesome! I used to have a 4.3L Jimmy 4x4 2 door that I wanted to do a V8 swap. That old motor had a killer knock to it. I never got around to doing it though :o I ended up trading it in (giving it to the dealer) for my new Escape back in 2003.
Sounds like a good time.
I am super excited! Ascinder and I were talking options this morning - for the money, this motor and trans package I'm looking at is an absolute bargain!

Just bought the motor and trans combo from a junkyard 4 miles away from home - they are delivering it tomorrow. I worked a deal that states I can go back for what items I need to make this swap work! $2000 for the motor, trans, comp, harness, elec throttle control, fuse box, cats, and drive accessories including the A/C compressor... I think I'll take the gauges and digital warning thingamabob later too.

It's the camera lens(Iphone) I think, besides, it's got to keep 550 ponies breathing:evil:.

Yeah, it's comin along. I get slowed down by other people and that bugs me. The junkyard locked my Jeep in their lot overnight (July 3rd) when they closed at 2 pm even though they told me they would have it all pulled out by noon. :mado: The new stuff is STILL at the junkyard! Luckily they didn't clip any of the wires when removing everything... wish I would have been able to remove all that stuff myself cuz now I have a box of bolts and don't know where they all go, wires unlabeled, and the motor and trans separated. They also said they couldn't sell used cats so I have to figure out what to do about that still. I will pick up all the goods and start placing the motor and trans between the frame rails and checking clearances this weekend...
I have 4 BFG MT's with no more than 200 miles and lifetime warranty on them. I took them in to have them swapped on my new set of used 15" 6-lug rims and they found a pin hole in the sidewalls of two tires. Since BFG discontinued that style MT I can't match my set of tires anymore. LAME! I wanted the old style... but they are 10+ years old so maybe its for the best. Now I am tire shopping at Discount Tire since they told me they would be willing to prorate the two good tires and reimburse me for the ruined two. So I should only be paying for four new warranties and maybe 10% of cost on two other tires. So now I am wondering if I should get new wheels too, in 16" flavor! :)
The axles should arrive next week and when they do I will be taking measurements to find out what offset and backspacing I am looking for...

I bolted the new trans and motor together and did the first test fit today. I had to remove the A/C compressor and mount (it mounts really low and contacted the frame rail). There is a way to relocate it to the stock S-10 location using 4.3 TBI parts though. Of course the exhaust manifolds were not going to fit so I took those off first thing. Now the trans is 1" away from reaching the stock trans mount/crossmember. The heater box is barely in the way - if it weren't I could bolt the trans down in the stock spot and start fabbing motor mounts. I may just Rotozip a hole in the heater box and patch it together with a recess... don't know yet.

How did you know I'd check your build thread? Damn am I that predictable? I just got the Patrol running again yesterday, new forklift distributor, new wires and plugs, timed everything, fixed a flat, and today I replaced one side of the front brakes. Tomorrow the other side and then the top's getting put on for winter. I just don't think I'll be keeping it long enough to use another engine though. But if I was, you know I'd swap in something better(like, dare I say it, a 4BT)-that's how I roll:supercool. I will give it to you though:

Spring over install with the overload leaves removed. The '95(?) Rodeo Dana 44 is what crushed my hand so I wanted it in - still work to do but it does suspend the Blazer enough to do...

The Blazer needed to be moved to the other 'stall' so AWOL could go back in the garage. Fun weekend with the rental hoist... installed the truck bed and moved the Blazer over. Then placed the motor and trans back on the frame after I removed the fenders and a bunch of IFS bracketry:

Now that the motor is sitting on the frame again, the front axle is underneath it, and the brackets are out of the way... I have been trying to figure out what exhaust manifolds I need, what motor mounts I should order, what steering issues I will have to deal with, if the radius arms I want to use are going to work, and what radiator mounting options I have. Everything is really tight, just how we like it! :smilewink

I can tell you right now that everyone hands down for power uses longtubes on the truck motors. However, space considerations obviously come into play here. I am running shorties, but am concerned with them coming very close to the frame. Block huggers are also an option. Just remember that you can use car parts too. Some of the older gen 3 vettes came with titanium exhaust IIRC. I can also check the clearance rack at summit for you if you decide on a particular type. I still think my idea of the motorcycle muffler zoomies is the best though:yesgray:

EBay only has the drivers side listed right now. I don't think I would have to modify them but here is what some have had to do:

For Halloween this year I dressed up as a mechanic and partied in the yard and garage!
I pulled a steering box out of an '80 2wd Astro van for the flipped pitman arm location. Exact same box as the S-10 just different output shaft. I really like how the Cherokee 44 drag link and the stock Astro pitman arm line up. The drag link is bent though.

I also pulled a steering shaft from an XJ Cherokee because of its slim u-joints versus the S-10 rag joint and bulky CV joint looking thing. I had to hammer it apart and cut off the friction pads and then sand off the paint from the inner shaft before I could collapse it enough to fit.

I also pulled a Hydroboost unit out of a '94 AWD Astro van to add a bit more room to the bay as well as increase braking abilities. I'm going to have to study which proportioning valves will work best for an app like this. The Hydro bolts up to the same spot but I need to fab up an inner mounting plate.

What are you putting in place of that column, or did you just remove it to get it out of the way? I'm still on the fence whether to keep my stock VX steering wheel or go with something different. I think by law you still have to have the airbags to drive on road IIRC. Did you get those dirty dingo mounts for the engine? I'd like to see how they turned out.

The column shifter linkage, fuel lines, brake lines, exhaust pipe, driveshaft, radius arm... would all be in one spot otherwise. At least I can get the linkage out of the way and have a cool shifter to boot.

Since the steering column was removed we were able to remove some fasteners and rotate the dash downward. This allowed us to get to the wires from above and remove them from the firewall.

I'm very curious yet slightly hesitant. I have time to think more about it....

Well I have made more progress on the dash! I went to the yard for another S-10 dash bezel to cut up and use for a gauge mounting solution. I also wanted to pic up these door panels with leather inserts I found previously in favor of the typical cloth ones I had. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a totalled Yukon Denali while I was there. Much of it was stripped already but I found the dash bezel sitting in the snow which is slightly different than the Sierra bezel... perfectly different!

So since I seemingly found a nice theme coming along in the interior I took an edumacated risk and stepped things up a bit by purchasing a Silverado column off eBay. Luckily, I was able to mount it up to the existing upper column mounts in my dash by adding some fender washers to use as spacers! The lower mount has not been fabbed up yet but here it is half-mounted in place:

In order to get the appropriate depth needed to mount the Sierra gauges in a stock S-10 bezel shroud I had to hack out the bracing of the dash within that space and then apply some heat to the defroster duct so that I could malform it and gain some room. It may look like there are holes in it but there are not:

I will be changing out the wiring from this column to use the wiring from the Sierra which came with radio and computer controls in the wheel!
Since I swapped out the steering box for an Astro version I had already installed the needed XJ Cherokee steering shaft. Happily, I was able to take the lower part of that shaft, drill a hole in it, and mate it to the Sierra upper shaft:

SO THEN! Things were still coming along nicely after I cut up the Denali dash bezel so I ordered a custom Denali blackwood style steering wheel!

As you can see, the bezel needs some more trimming before I epoxy it to the bezel shroud and create a mounting setup... You can see the left over vacuum actuated heater control tubes on the floorboard - stupid things!

After rearranging the garage to create work zones for this project I dug out the wiring harnesses I pulled from the Sierra and connected them all together again. I went back to the yard to pick up some needed bits to solve some mysteries and those are all shown connected here:

Since I knew I needed to solve my exhaust manifold problem I ordered (again, from eBay) this driver-side '98-'99 F-Body LS1 manifold and this mystery pair of manifolds. These are steel tube so they can be welded on pretty easily for modification. They did not fit in stock form (which was expected) so I cut off the lower flanges of the 2 driver-side manifolds so that I could combine the smaller of the two pieces.

I still need to weld closed the O2 bung and install one on the other side of the tube due to a frame clearance problem. The passenger manifold doesn't quite clear the passenger frame rail with the engine located where it sits now - it will need to be raised at least one inch. This is why I have waited so long to pick out a motor mount solution... still contemplating a few options...
RamairZ - do you recognize that driver manifold with the exit tube in the center? Can't figure out what it came from... :confused:

Hydraulic lines for heavy equipment comes to mind, completely flexible, handle tons of pressure? Of course, those are some type of rubber/tygon tubes wrapped in SS and more rubber...Another thought is that it could be derived from the hopes and dreams of the middle class american;)

Got it from the original owner (still had window sticker in it lol), all dealer receipts for maintenance etc etc. He traded me for my Camaro, he wanted something for him and his son to work on. I've been wanting another fullsize truck (wife has been bugging me too) but I told myself I wouldn't do it unless I got something worth it that I liked. Then this came along, books for 6K more than my Camaro so I can't complain lol. It's gonna get some mods soon (intake/headers/exhaust/nitrous hehe)

In the past 3 years that sounds about right lol. In California I kinda had a business going without even thinking about it, I kept buying/selling/trading for profit. Picked up a bike for 1K, put about $400 into it and sold for $2800, bought a 67' Biscayne, had about $2200 into it and traded it for a Camaro that I ended up parting out due to some horrible hidden body damage and made over 6K off that, etc etc etc. Before we moved to Cali I had my 1st Camaro for almost 5 years before someone hit me in it and my Z71 I had for almost 4 years before the wife convinced me to get rid of it when we moved, that's when it all started haha. I'm gonna get anotehr Camaro but I'm gonna wait until I can build the 1st gem I've always wanted. I think alot of my toys have just been a "wow, I could do this, that and this" and have a neat project but it's not what I "really" want/need, just something fun. I've always wanted a Silverado SS, told myself after I got rid of my Z71 that my next pickup would be one, and this is basically one minus the AWD (05 and later SS's were 2wd anyways, just used the 9.5 14-bolt rear axle), even has the SS gauge cluster in it, plus I like the GMC grilles better.
Yeah I totally dig the GMC's over the Chevy's - I even have a GMC grill waiting to be installed. BTW, that Denali has left the building.
I removed the VIN plate from the donor truck today and I think I'll put in on my firewall.

Too bad there is no way to have the dogtags of all my victims at this point... :( That would be SIX extra VIN plates on the firewall so far HAHA! :cool: If I ever get to build the dedicated rat-rock-rod I have envisioned I will be all over that idea, Mav!

amigo flares!!!! You could do it a number of ways. Spot weld the panels in place working from one end and then switching to the other back and forth until you get it basically welded up, grind the welds, some body filler and/or glass. You could straight glass it in, you could use lead and melt it in with that like the old school body guys.
Those are Pathfinder fenders actually - much easier to find than the Amigo fenders. And I already knew that I was going to spot/stitch weld them in place but I just want to make sure I go thru the process correctly. I have weldable primer to go under the flare and on the quarter panel behind the flare. I just don't want to end up with some bondo cracked rusted panel...

Gotcha, those Pathfinder flares do look alot like Amigo ones. Gonna be sweet! I'll see if I can find a good video, you just wanna make sure you let your welds cool and keep jumping sides and leaving a little space in between the welds at first to not warp anything.
So then my 4" flare 2" rise fiber fenders came in!!! These were tough to find but I have had my eye on them for over a year. I chose the axle combination based on the idea of the extra width afforded by these front fenders and the Pathfinder fenders grafted to the rear. 8" wide 4.5" backspaced wheels work just about perfectly with this setup - barely legal! :bgwo:

Oh, the front axle is shown at it's full compression location in these pics. After flexing out, the tires should tuck up in there nicely. :)

I was also RIGHT about the prospect of using a Hummer H3 DBW gas pedal in combination with the Sierra pedal to create a pedal assembly of a more compact size. I removed the H3 pedal and springs (slightly softer setup than the Sierra) from it's housing and added that to the Sierra housing and it fits perfectly on the firewall while clearing the steering column!!! I'll be making up a simple how-to for folks familiar with the search function on LS1Tech.com and some S-10 forums. :laughgray Yes, I am a courteous prick!

awesome job man! I honestly wish my truck used a cable instead of the DBW. Never been a fan of DBW. That H3 setup looks like it will save a good bit of space, good deal!

BartThanks gents. The DBW affords me cruise control with no vacuum needed and that I like, plus I like how everything is tied together by working with the APP which is pretty simple.

Ya the DBW cleans everything up I've just never been a fan of tuning it for performance and the throttle response feels so much slower in kicking in on my truck than any cable vehicle. You could ease on the throttle with a cable now if I barely ease on it it does nothing until it reach "that" point than all of a sudden, gas. Plus maybe it's me, I like being in control of it lol.
I like flooring it so it works for me! LOL

I have been using Revit Architecture 2012 to model a few things on the Blazer. I also acquired some parts over the last few months and have done crap loads of research and parts watching. I have studied the chassis, firewall, steering box mount and all the parts that I know will be going in and it plainly came down to making a serious decision. I was overwhelmed with the thought of cutting the frame at the firewall, effectively removing the strongest section of frame and leaving the weakest in tact. So I took several measurements across the body and frame - most important, the body mounts. I chose the wheel and tire size I would like and modeled them to scale (or close anyway). I then started modeling the parts I had in hand to use or reuse.....

This where I am at right now - the rear floor section has been modeled, the fuel tank with connections at the top, the body mounts, the Cage Offroad radius arms, reference points on the frame and body.

I aim to build a tube chassis or perhaps a hybrid of rectangle steel and tube - I have 1 3/4" DOM in hand and the tubing bender mounted. I am nervous because of the scale of it. :( But by modeling everything beforehand I should make less waste and mistakes. :o
I am hunting for a driver side drop 27 spline NP241C... the later the better. I already have a '94 32 spline so I could settle for a 27 spline input shaft as well. :yesgray: Oh and an aluminum radiator that will cool an LS. These items need to be modeled before I would start building...

Man, dude, I wish you lived over here. We could gang bang our mutual projects. I'm guessing your situation is basically like mine, 100% solo. It sucks not having a helper to motivate you and assist you. It gets tough and extremely overwhelming. All three of my Zus need wrench time right now, and it sucks and stresses me out bigtime.
The project looks cool though. Try to stay focused, and eat it like an elephant.

I went to Tear-A-Part today and found a '92 Suburban 1500 Auto with an NP241. Tore it out with 3 sockets and a clamp, carried it 100 yards as if I were performing in a Worlds Strongest Wee-man competition, and spent $100. It shifts great, had no signs of leakage, and mated right up to my trans. I'll probably order the SYE from JB later.
Don't mind me, I'm just recording what year Pathfinder I took the blower motor, heater core, damper box and ducting from today... it was a '91.
When you get all done, plz try to cypher what % original vehicle is left...:laughing:

Got some rims off eBay. BLINGY!! I wanted 17's but when I found billet Centerlines in 16x8 from 1993... BRAND NEW still in plastic!!! ...I jumped on 'em. They match the old skool body but damn are they shiny! Need 1/4" spacers to clear the tie rod end also...

The last 2 weekends have been all garage so the house and yard are farked!

Damn dude, that modelling looks great! I like the fabwork too, you're makin' me feel bad for not making a frame on mine:yeso: I just blew out one of my casters on one of the wheel dollies holding up the VX, so be careful moving stuff around-the caster wasn't even caught on a lip or anything, just too much side pressure on the rotational ball bearing. I need to mock up my engine/trans/transfer case combo too, but storing it like that is a bit tricky for me.

Hello!!! This project is still around I just work slowly. Not that anyone cares. Haha. But I quit my job & sold my house & moved back to Wyoming. I figured I would add this photo highlighting the hillbilly rape wagon-esque moment I parked it:

I had to put the stock frame back in and make quick wooden SAS mounts in order to trailer the project to its new home.

It worked so well for loading, transporting 440 miles, & unloading that I may just run with it! LOL
