Ok i want to swap out my front and rear gear and pinion i was wondering if anyone has done this? If you have can you post the ratio you upgraded to and part numbers and make for me.

If any has taken apart there diff and has gotten the part number/manufacture off there gear and pinion that would be helpful as well.

Jake
Thanks

Unless you know what your doing, I'd let a pro set up your gears. It requires special tools like a carrier bearing puller (about 300.00 for a decent one) and a dial indicater with special fixtures to set the pinion depth and measure the ring gear depth. They need to be set within a couple thousandth of an inch, or else they will wear out quickly and be very noisy.
I don't want to rain on your parade or anything. Maybe you already know all this. If you don't though, it can become a big headache quickly.
I would encourage you to change the gears though. I put 4.77's in mine and at 60 mph with 33" tires the speedo is like 1mph off, Not to mention the torque increase

Is there a good place to get the 4.77s? I have 33's on mine and wouldn't mind gearing down a bit.

Yes, they're rare, but if you look hard enough...:smilewink

And if you find an extra set, keep me in mind...:yesgray:

I've bent spoons with my butt cheeks but never picked up sticks. :bgwb:

I might check around here at some yards. What's the magic Trooper that has the gears we need?

I have the 4.77's on mine and they are perfect for 33's, I did the install by myself, but the set-up of the gears and swapping the limited slip I had a shop do for me.

I believe the 4.77 12 bolt ring and pinions are still available from dealers, as thats where I purchased mine. (or at least one of my sets)

All second gen 4x4 Amigo's with the 2 liter engine had 4.77 gears. The rears were Dana 44, so that is out. The fronts axles were all ten bolt, BUT there was only a six month period when they used the Corporate ten bolt. (Wich is what you need.) The rest were Dana 10 bolts which are slightly different.

I don't remember off the top of my head which six month period that was, but I'm sure I posted it here before. I found all the information I needed online, so I'm sure you can too. I'll look through my stuff again to try to find it for you. You might try PlanetIsuzu.com (http://PlanetIsuzu.com)too. They have a wealth of information onAmigo's and troopers, as does the International trooper Owners Guild. (http://www.ITOG.com)

Anyway, take this ifo you have, go to Car-part.com (http://Car-Part.com) type in what you are looking for and you'll start to see just how freaking easy it is going to be to come across these things. Some have the vin numbers listed. Some you'll have to call about. Don't think that they will take one apart to look at the gear make for you. Know what you are looking for. VIN ID might be possible too.

From another angle, There's a decent chance the OAL of the Dana axle housing is the same and would bolt right up. that would require some other manuals, and/or scrounging around a junk yard though.

Happy Hunting

P.S. JFI
If you ask for just the ring and pinion, its likely they will say they don't have it. You usually have to buy the whole axel assy. You can ask them to only ship you the third member, but then you wouldn't have the two spare CV's.

When you need new CV boots get the ones from Independant 4x4 (http://independent4x.com/), They REALLY ARE superior, and not much different in price. I leave the small end slightly loose using only a Small zip-tie so it can slide a little bit, but still keep water out and grease in. High angles tear the other kind up.

The rare troppers you are looking for are either the RS troopers, or troopers that came with the offroad package.

The code on the build plate should be an S2J I believe. The RS troopers are two doors like the VX, but were only around in 89 and 93, with a handful in 94 and 95. I believe the RS troopers are just about, or rarer than a VX, so good luck.

The Amigo's Are S2J as well. but only some of the S2J's Gears will work, and if thats not tricky enough, I think the carrier designs were a little different too. So I had to use Those gears in My Vx carrier.

Yeah the offroad package had honeycomb wheels, and wider tires, hence the need for the 4.77's. Member "Wisdom" should be able to help locate some more if they are out there, he found mine for me about a year ago:

Well, tentatively...I've aquired a set of 4:77's...
I say "tentatively" because I never believe anything till the deal is actually done & I have the product in hand.

Triathlete (Thanks Billy) posted in another thread about someone over on Planet Isuzu with a set for sale & I jumped on em.

They'll be delivered to Moab in a couple weeks & I'll haul em home & install the Aussie locker & get em set up & bolted in, hopefully this summer...:yesgray:
