View Full Version : 50K and still Orig. Brakes??

Well, hit 50K this week. Thinking it may be time to inspect brakes. No issues, no pulsating, vibtating or noises which is amazing for 50 K. Question is can we still obtain OEM pads for fronts and is Merlin best place to check? Also, what kinda life did others get from original brakes? These things have been good so far.

Yep, not uncommon...:thumbup:

What I find uncommon is that in many cases, the rear pads are toast before the fronts...:_thinking

I just changed my rears with over 70k on em', & yes, I did let them go too long & got into one of the rear rotors...:upsetgray
(but it did give me an excuse to get drilled rotors...:smilewink)

But the fronts had so much left on them that I saved the replacement pads for another day.

I've heard of this on other VX's, & some Troopers too.

And yes, Merlin is the go to guy for anything OEM...:yes:

I bought my VX with 15 k on it, so I assume the breaks were original. I've got 105 k on it now. I guess I'm going to get some new one before next years Moab ZuZu.

The originals are ceramic and they last a very long time.
I changed my rears at 65K, 136K, and 198K.
I changed the fronts at 80K, and 160K.

The originals were always replaced with good aftermarket ceramic pads which seem just as good as the OEM's. Don't go with cheaper semi-metalic, always use ceramic pads. They cost over $100 per axle, but they're well worth it. They also don't leave any visible brake dust.

Ceramic is the way to go,mines are from satisfied which is a canadian brand and thought not that expensive,however it has excelent reviews all over the net.

I'm very happy with the braking it has provide to the VX so far :yesgray:

I just looked up Isuzu prices for their brake pads from an August '04 electronic parts catalog.

This is what they give ya for the fronts-

The prices from back then-

Those prices may have gone up some by now. I wonder if each kit is only for one wheel?

The $100+ per axle I pay is including installation. When I get those new aftermarket calipers where you just pull a pin and slide the old pads out and put in the new ones in just seconds without removing anything, then I'll do my own brakes. :)

IIRC, about $70.00 frt & $70.00 rr is what I paid per axle from Merlin.

Thanks, Ldub. So now we know that each kit covers the whole axle. That's a nice price for such good pads from a dealer. :yesy:

I've got 124k miles on my front rotors and pads, and they passed dealer inspection at 120k. I bought new front rotors and pads from Merlin in July, and the total was $419.40.

The rears were changed out at about 85k. The dealer said the rotors rusted from the inside out.

Two bolts isn't that much more difficult!:bwgy:

I had over 120k on my fronts when I changed them. My rears still look good at 128k.

Just got these prices from Merlin last week:
Front pads: Isuzu part # 8-97035-257-1, $118.46
Rear pads: Isuzu part # 8-97035-266-0, $94.49

These part #s match what Mark posted from 4 yrs ago, so this is the "pad kit", not just the pads. Wow, inflation, nearly 75%! :eek: But still cheap since they last so long.......

Wow, did not realize quality of the OEM brakes. My wides Saturn eats pads and rotors. Great info.

I didnt read all posts but would suggest you have/do the removal of the front rotors and grease the bearings, they ar seated in the rotors and you will be able to inspect the pads up close and personal like...
