Caught one of these nasty lookin' things outside the front doors at work tonight...
I named him "Bitey"...:naughty:

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/What_i2199.jpg

Giant water beetle, they feed by ambushing frogs & small fish from underneath, injecting them with venom, which liquifies their innards, then drinking them at their lesure.

He's in a plastic drinking glass with a ventilated coffee cup lid right now & judging from the activity within, I'd say he's a tad pissed.

Hope he doesn't escape before morning & take his revenge...:uhohgray:

I'm gonna start collecting them, then implement a captive breeding program, & eventually rule the world with my army of giant mutant water beetles...

You have been warned...:naughty: Muwahahahahahahaha

No, not yet, but he comes WELL EQUIPPED !...

If you google "Giant Water Beetle" there's quite a lot of info. on their eating/breeding/feeding habits, etc.

I think I borrowed the name from a Simpsons episode...Homer had a pet possum or something.

I seem to remember him saying: "I call the little one Bitey"

This is the type of statement (copied from wikipedia) that is gonna keep ol' Bitey from becoming any type of cuddly lap type pet...

"Their bite is considered one of the most painful that can be inflicted by any insect."

I think I borrowed the name from a Simpsons episode...Homer had a pet possum or something.

I seem to remember him saying: "I call the little one Bitey"

It was the monorail episode, Homer was the conductor. There was a control panel that housed the speed controls, I think. When Homer opened it, there was a family of possum hanging in there and many frayed/shorting wires. He then looked at his bandaged finger and announced: "I call the big one Bitey".

I think that is a fantastic name for your new pet, hopefully you will never find out if "Their bite is considered one of the most painful that can be inflicted by any insect."

Nope, Dub keeps his inards liquified in other ways!:bwgy:

1/2 giant abdomen creepy shiny pincher thing

That would probably be a centipede...

In the past few weeks on my trail runs I have seen a few rather large taranchulas

along with a lot of desert tourtoises...I generally just pick them up and move them off the trail so they don't meet there maker under the tires of a mtn bike.
They are much nicer than the usual that I run into on the trail...

holy crapola, I had to remove 2 tarantulas when Dave was gone from INSIDE the garage, some very large spider inside the living room, kind of hairy 8 legs....then the weird bug I described above had only 6 or maybe 8 legs. Dave chucked it way over the fence ....I should have taken a pic...cuz it's like nuttin' I've ever seen! I'm keepin' my windows up so these critters done get inside the cabin of the VX (probably a futile effort....) I can just see me gettin' in and taking off then finding a tarantula climbing around inside...OMG, please don't let that happen! I just don't like bugs & spiders.....call me a wuss but I just can't deal with them! Mice, rats, birds, no problem. Unidentifiable 6-8 legged critters.....PROBLEM!

You guys got them small green rattlers up there also...VERY venomous!
Taranchulas are pretty predictable. They tell you when not to mess with them...they rear back and show their fangs. If you move slow around them they will walk right up your hand and tickle you with all that hair!:bwgy:

Just remembered a water-bug related incident from my "mis-spent yoot"

(Judge Munster: "A what? What's a yoot?")

Twas in about junior high I suppose...the neighborhood girls were having a "sleepover" in the neighbor's pop-up camper. The bored neighborhood boys were hanging out on the street nearby.

All the girls went into the house for cookies or something...right about the time a huge water bug (much bigger than the one you caught Larry) started circling the streetlight we were under. It fell to the ground, and, well, we tossed the water bug into the camper.

Not much later the girls all came out and piled back into the camper. We didn't have to wait too long for the gratifying screams to begin...:p

The sleepover was held indoors that night.

I remember in my mis-spent yoot settin and watchin Tumble Bugs (in Okla.) for hours..For those that don't know, a tumble bug is a bug that takes pieces of fresh cow dung and makes a ball (about the size of a quarter) out of it . Then it pushes its prize back to its hole to feed its young. so ya sit the watchin this bug push a ball of sh.t along...of course the ground is not level so as it pushes it up little hills it starts to get away from him on the downhill side, so he grabs hold and the bug and ball of sh.t tumble over and over. Hence "tumble bug". it's very funny to see. I learned some of life's greatest lessons from watchin them. 1. To some it's sh.t, to others it's a prize 2. Hang on to your sh.t 3. Sometimes ya havta work a sh.tty job to keep your family fed. Well thanks for listning.

Or maybe in their purse...

Do those things hibernate through the winter? Or do they just hatch that big? seems awfully early (April for chrissake) for a freshly hatched waterbug to get that big...

Good point, I'm pretty sure it's not the same one, as I released "Bitey" into the wilds of the storm sewer near my home, which is about two miles as the bug crawls.

You could sell those to an entomophagy if you know any . The water bugs here in the US are actually a little on the small side , when compared to the ones in Thailand. I've only encountered freeze dried ones from Thailand, they are about 4 inches head to rear, and stinky.
