Well like the title states I have a grand in hand that i can spend on a lift and shocks and what not. I'm looking at the independent4x sport kit for $720 then spending the rest on anything else i may need for it. Has anyone bought this kit. I'm looking at getting 16" wheels with 285/75/16's. so the question is. if you had a $1000 to spend what would you get. and am i over paying for the kit at 720? could i piece it together and save a hundred bucks or more? oh and i'm looking for about a 3 inch lift. Thanks guys i know i'll get some good answers. I'm new here and already am pretty impressed.

Do a search and you will find plenty of options/opinions. The indy kit is nice but has a lot of things that you just don't need. Use the KISS method...OME 912 springs, flip your ball joints to ease alignments and crank the torsion bars plus an alignment. VX lifted for under $200 (if you do the work which is easy and documented on this site). Then you have $800 to put towards some sweet tires!

Make sure to read the Lift Wiki (http://www.vehicross.info/modules.php?name=Content&file=viewarticle&op=newarticle&id=66)

When you replace your shocks ... put them away (don't throw them away). You'll want them back eventually.

But seriously don't buy any kits or anything, look up the many awesome threads we already have on here about lifting and just get some springs and go from there, it really is not that complicated :) Good luck, let us know if you have any problems.

A big X2 on that. I lifted for the cost of the OME912s. Like $140. DONE DUNDY!

Also, think about how many inches you REALLY want. ( :naughty: ) Basically, I mean think about your CVs vs your lift height and what you really NEED.

Bart, i'm aiming for about what you have with just a hair wider tires, ome 912, 1inch poly spacers, rancho 9000xl's, what else do i need? and where's the best/cheapest place to go those parts. i hear about the rancho's for buy 3 get one free but right now they are all running the buy 4 and get the remote free..... i'm not feelin the remote. then the one inch spacer and ome 912's where are the best place to get those. and last do i need the break line extensions and the shock boots and other spacer parts that come in the kit?

I just ordered the 912s from Indy4x but I know you can get them cheaper at Rocky-Road (apparently takes much longer). Spacers can be purchased cheap on Amazon (or somewhere similar). You dont need the brakeline extensions/other stuff now and you probably dont need the spacer but thats your choice. I actually just posted a thread about spacers/coils last week. Check it out, specifically the links tom4bren posted- they're helpful. And check out monchas Taylor Richies's lift wiki under howtos (very very helpful).
BTW
"Not Bart" - but he does have a nice looking VX :bwgy:

Yeah, all I have is the OME 912s and some torsion bar cranking. Nothing else. Stock shocks, stock bump stops, no spacers. The lift with the springs is about 2"s and then with the 265 tires about a total of 3"s. IMO, a perfect balanced look for the VX. I have a slight rake (I think I only turned my torsion bars 8-9 times) which imo looks good and keeps the angle slightly better for my CVs.

Bart, one of these days I'm gonna photochop your VX body over mine so you can see what a proper lift/rim/tire combo should look like.

I don't think "proper" is the word you were looking for. I think "completely-out-of-proportion-and-awkward" is the correct word.

so if i do the 912's and a 1 inch spacer, will i need to do the diff drop? i'm fairly decent with a welder and i'm sure i can find some plate steel to make the brackets but will i need them?

NEED...not absolutely. Especially if you don't mind changing out CV boots a little more often.
Keep in mind, every inch of diff drop you do, is an equal amount of ground clearance lost, which is the other reason (besides larger tires) for lifting in the first place...:_wrench:
Also, if you drop your front diff, those kilby belly pans prolly won't fit...:waag:

I'll hold off on the diff drop at first and buy some CV boots to start with then see how it goes from there. any suggestions on the boots? thanks again for everyones help. If i don't buy the sport package from indy4x. how much can i expect to pay for springs, spacers, and shocks. 912's, 1 inch poly, and 9000xl's thanks again.

Are your CV boots already torn? You don't really need to buy any unless you just want to have them on-hand, which isn't a bad idea.
The popular replacement kit for torn Isuzu CVs is the Mecatech CV boot kit.
https://www.independent4x.com/merchantmanager/product_info.php?products_id=205
But again, you don't need that unless you have torn boots already or just want them at the ready.

sooooo guy about the price of springs and shocks...... how much for springs, i seem them for like 70 to 80 i'm guessin that's each and the shocks are 95 and i'm guessin that's each. and the spacers are 100 for the pair. so that puts me at about 650ish and the kit is 720 and it adds the shock boots, extended brake lines and bump stops and some other odds and ends

viper,
I can't say how much was spent on my lift since it was done by the previous owner. I do know that he used the Calmini kit which is $$$ but then turned around and removed all of the kit from the front & just did the torsion bar crank. It sounds like you've pretty much made up your mind to go with the kit. Go with your gut feeling & enjoy the results.
On the diff drop issue & 'eating' CV boots. Some get away with it - some don't. I went through 3 sets of boots in 1 year (& toasted the CVs once), LittleBeast was just as bad, Bart's been lucky & hasn't had any problems. Do your lift & wait to see if you need the drops. There are still pix in my gallery of the ones I had done.
Dub,
I didn't notice any significant loss in ground clearance with the diff drop. Technically speaking, you're right. In reality, the pumpkin doesn't hang down any more than any number of things down there (crossmembers, oil pans, ...). My dropped Calmini crossmember may be a problem for me if I make it to Moab 2010.
Peanut Butter,
Yes, guilty of TJ but ... it was still within the general scope of the thread & since viper is a newbie, he needs to be educated on what offset from hell looks like. I was really just tempting him to go look in my gallery for a look that is slightly more radical than what he's currently entertaining.

I'm set on wheel size and tire size wheel 16 x 8 and tire 285/75/16 all terrain now what offset should I look at?

Generally speaking, unless you want Tom's "offset from hell", go with the wheel in any given brand/model with the greatest amount of backspacing.
Try to get a wheel with + offset value (more backspacing) with zero offset as a minimum.

Prices?
For the springs the cheapest will be Rocky Road...he doesn't always keep them in stock so it may take a little longer to get them. If you want them fast...Indy 4x
As for shocks and spacers...search the web and ebay for best price. For speed and in stock...Indy 4x
Indy 4x also will give you GREAT customer service, assistance and advice. His kits are thoroughly put together and usually come with everything needed (except tools). You can call Matt with any problems and he is always eager to help you resolve it.

the spacers are 100 for the pair.
If you need spacers try these instead, they work the same as those $90 1in. Indys.
I tested them here (http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=15476)
