I have owned my VX for almost a year and have decided I HAVE TO change the horn. I thought it was cute at first but now it's gotta go. I can't even make another driver mad when I honk the horn. Someone pulls out in front of me and I honk the horn. The other driver just smiles. So has anyone put a different horn on their VX?????

its hard to see in the photos.. but just to the right of the passenger headlight there is a small 12v air compressor.. hose runs from that to the large chrome thing in front of the electric fan on that side.. thats an 18" air horn trumpet

I replaced mine with these Detroit high & low horns. They are small and loud.

EtlSport--- Nice modification. However; way, way, way too labor intensive for a simple horn upgrade!!! We'll use your example as a "what NOT to do modification".

SomeBeach--- Take a peek at: www.JCWhitney.com They have quite a wide variety of electric horn replacements that will give you the BIG sound you're looking for with a very simple one-for-one replacement installation.

Mine has a 3 trumpet airhorn system in it. Sounds not too bad!
I could get pics but if really wanted to see the whole setup id have to get a pic with the bumper off like etlsports

eh it wasnt that bad.. i tried lots of electric horns and smaller air horns.. all too high pitched for what i wanted.. not loud enough either ;Db;

the front bumper had to come off anyway, there is a second horn behind the cladding under the passenger headlight, so if you installed an aftermarket horn to replace the one behind the grille, you get a whole mix of sounds that sounds awful.. i

lol,

Its a couple of wires.

I am looking at horns too. I am going the air horn route. I have always had air horns but find them too high pitch as the cheaper options have very short trumpets. im hoping to get a set with 38cm horns which will be nice a bassey (that a word?)

I too looked at the train horn as i am looking at on board compressor and air tank for tyre inflation etc....bit TOO loud though :D

EtlSport--- Hmmm, I didn't know there was a "second horn" under the passenger headlight. What a installation nightmare. I'm gonna' keep my VX horn system 100% stock and not mess with it. Like my Dad used to tell me "If it ain't broke; don't fix it".

Hella Supertones. Can be bought for roughly $40-$70 a pair from nearly anyone that sells vehicle parts and can be installed in less than 1/2 hour. Had them in my old WRX and they definitely allow you to be HEARD/SEEN for a little guy on the road.

I tried a few months ago to install some in my VX and gave up for the time being. Install locations are limited since our grille is so inner concave (installing as seen like above that is). If you don't mind locating the horns elsewhere, you should have no issues at all.

I plan to pick up another pair and install some in my new STi and hopefully get around to going ahead and just mounting them in my VX.

wormgod, if something happens that you decide you dont want the supertones, i would love to have a set :naughty:

i think i can find a way to get them behind the grill ;)

Don't be such a negative nancy, it is a 5 minute mod, once you get the front cladding off. There are two factory horns, and there is a ton of room under there for just about whatever you want. I went with the big dog dual tones, very easy to do, less than 40 bucks, and it sounds like a truck finally. I do dig the 18" tugboat idea though....similar to what I had on my offshore fishing boat...
With my new bumper and clovis pin mount, I will be able to do anything I want to the front, unlike you all with your silly plastic front end:)

oh i meant originally.. as in my first iteration of my horn modding ;Db; ive discovered my mods usually come in twos.. a get my feet wet kinda mod.. then a brilliant (or crazy) idea stemming from the first mod heh

first mod: 2 small air horns
second mod: 18" boat horn

first mod: upgraded cd player
second mod: cd/dvd/mp3 player and in dash monitor

first mod: small subs and amp
second mod: replaced all speakers, and added 2 amps

first mod: made plastic insert for switches over fuzzy hole
second mod: fiberglassed dash smooth and painted silver (later painted blue)

hehe

anyone know of a direct plug in replacement for the factory horn that sounds deeper than out tiny baby horn? where is our horn located anyways?

MSHardeman

There are actually two horns and they are both located behind the front cladding on the passenger side. I THINK there is one on either side of the foam "rib" behind the cladding. I actually moved them closer together when I located the ballast for my HID's right under the headlights behind the front cladding and the horn sounds awful now. The two notes are dissonant and they sound even worse when you get the two horns near each other.

I picked up a self contained airhorn from Harbor Freight for Boy's Samurai. It was an easy install & sounds pretty good.

You could just leave the OEM horns in place & wire an aftermarket horn via relay from the OEM. The aftermarket horn should drown out the OEM.

If the Fiamm air horn in the Rodeo ever dies I'm going to go back to all electric and hit the pull and pay and grab a set out of a Volvo V50/S40. They are made by Fiamm and VERY loud.

To this day, still never found a valid solution for the Supertones. They would look great peeking through the grille.... :(
