Well, I finally got my replacement hood insert into the LineX guy. It came out looking very nice. Hope to get it installed tonight & take a few pix. I'm not sure what I was expecting but the finish is much 'rougher' than I anticipated. I think it'll be OK though.

I'll be taking my original one to the guy that refinished my SeaDoo for an estimate. Frog11 has first dibs on it if it turns out good. We can keep the cycle going tho if others need a replacement. I'll only charge what it cost for the repair plus shipping.

I had my hood inseret LINE-X'd about two weeks ago and it looks great. I got the idea from OC PROTON.

How much did you guys end up paying for the insert LineX'd? I also want to see some pics.

The local guy charged me $50. He'll prolly drop the price tho for any more (he said he'd only charge me $25 for each piece of cladding I brought in to be LineX'd).

I paid $100.00

I left the car and let the LINE-X guy do all the work.

Picked it up 4 hrs later and it is perfect.

BTW, it only takes about 30 min to R/R the hood insert. All you need is a 10mm and a 12mm wrench.

It's just too bad that Transformers didn't hit theaters a few years earlier. A Proton VX would have been a shoe-in for the part of Bumblebee.

The insert looks really good!

I was told by the local LINE-X guy here in Portland that the LINE-X doesn't stick that well to plastic.

He said there is a "base" or "primer" for a plastic application but, it doesn't work that well.

I have no idea if that is true or just his opinion etc....

I heard the same thing... I called about the cladding and they thought it would not stick good enough and the heat of the line x would be iffy on the poly.

I am pretty sure that Tomdietrying did his front cladding and some of his hood. I think the hood was the part that started to bubble.

There ought to be something to beat the cracking problem, even if it's not LineX. I had the engine cover and a few other engine bay trim pieces painted on my previous car and the body shop primed, painted, clearcoated, and then sealed the plastic with some 3M high-temp resistant coating. The body shop normally warranties their work for a year, but in this case they were so sure of the product that they actually guaranteed me the paint would never fade or crack.

I'll have to do some research on what they used...

Yeah, two and a half years ago I did my front cladding in Line-X, and I Line-Xed a bra for the hood. It did bubble on my hood, but that was because my hood had been repainted, and they didn't do a good job repainting it. The guy that Line-Xed it redid it for free. This time he sanded the bad paint job off where he was going to use Line-X. It's been over two years now and everything has been greatm with it.

The seat covers are some off the shelf units from AutoZone. They are a splash pattern which goes well with my SeaDoo theme. I'll try to remember to snap a few pix for ya when I get home from Niagara Falls.

do you have a close-up pic of the Line-x bra?

I'm liking this idea.
Also, Bart, as for contrast to ebony... Line-x can be done in any color! Check out their site!

When my magna-bra dies, I'll probably do like Tom mentioned & get it done in LineX. Same area covered so it'll look very much like it does now.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. I had a Magnet-bra first. I didn't like that the Magnet-Bra left a film on my hood when I took it off. I was almost like it melted the film on my hood. I couldn't wash it off either. Some people have waxed their hood before installing the Magnet-Bra. This seems to take care of that issue. I also didn't like that the Magna-Bra looked almost too pretty. I wanted a little rugged look to my bra. lol That sounds funny. Anyhow, I liked the line and shape of the Magnet-Bra, so I had the Line-X guy follow the same line pattern.

If you look through the pictures of Moab 2009, there should be plenty of pics of my VX. I'll look through it tonight too to see what I can find.

BTW, I gotta remove the hood insert again. One of the corner studs was broken off. I hoped double sided tape would hold it in place ... I don't.

Well I've gotten 2 estimates on repairing and repainting my cracked hood insert. The first was at a customizing place ... $450. The second was at the place that painted my SeaDoo a cupla years ago ... $600.

Rekin I'll be trying my hand at fiberglass repair myself (I work cheap when I work for myself).

My only concern is that the SeaDoo guy indicated that the insert is SMF (or SMC or something like that) & fiberglass resin wouldn't stick to it very well. Ideas???

I was thinking of using this stuff (it's worked well for me in the past):

At the price of that repair, the CF hood insert option is definitely looking very desirable at $330.
