View Full Version : FBI Profile of a Vx owner

Marlin

While taking a shower, (I know, sounds weird), I thought of an interesting thread.

If the FBI were to profile, stereotype, generalize...a VX owner, what would their file say? I am gonna add the stipulation as current Vx owners, because I would guess first gen owners and 2nd/3rd gen owners are different. I would never pay 35K for a two door SUV, especially back in 99-01. So there will certainly be differences between original owners and current owners (if not the same person).

I would start with:
Vx owners love attention!!
FBI style:White, male, >27yrs old? likes outdoors, shoot, this is starting to sound like a singles ad...

Not sure on age, I know there are a few younger, but once again, its a generalization. I will be 30 soon, I know Bart is 33, Tom is old(jab), Riffraff is old(jab again), Scott is really old(I don't jab senior citizens,it's not nice)

LIST:
Loves attention

Marlin,

We where actually talking about this at our last Colorado VX meet and really couldn't come up with a "typical" VX owner. I thought that since these things where so odd and "designerly" that there would be a bunch of people in the design field (artists, architects, graphic engineers, etc.) attracted to them. I know that we have a few of those types around (heck, I'm an architect), but we really have a very diverse bunch of owners. From policemen to software engineers, students to retirees and all different ages.

The great thing is that the VX attracted us to it for some reason, and even with our motley crew here on the site, we all seem to get along (for the most part:p).

There must be certain things most of us have in common. My wife has a bachelors in psychology, she said "You (Vx owners) are all crazy, you love your car more than your spouse".
I didn't really argue with her, she is the expert after all.:bgwb:

"diverse bunch of owners"

Despite our diversity, there must be some commonality.

I'll go with 'social'

Look at the number of posts here & you'll notice that we are a talkative group. Even the 'wet behind the ears' newbies talk up a storm. Case in point is Mr. Marlin here - only a member for 3 months & look at the controversy he has generated. Maybe he's just too young to realize that 'old & sneeky' beats 'young & energetic' hands down ... every time.

LOL. Except in the Presidential election...sorry, couldn't help it.
This it what happens when you do 5 deployments over 9 years at sea. There isn't a whole lot to talk about at 3 in the morning and you have to be there 6hrs straight at a time. Arguing is the only entertaining thing. ;Db;

Back to the thread, I would like to add obsessive.

"I would like to add obsessive"

This thread won't be that much fun if you just throw out words. You have to justify why it applies.:)

Fine, if you hadn't noticed, I changed my signature, I realized how crazy it made me look. I spent thousands in the last few months upgrading my Vx, maintenance, planning for Moab, goin to Uhwarrie in a few weeks, mods. I am obsessed!!!!!!!!!! Looking at pics and number of posts on this forum, we are all obsessive.

"I changed my signature"

I thought you were just taking my comment on 'people who generalize' to a whole new level.

The obsessive nature of VX owners is rather self explanitory - my comment was really for the next thread participants.

This is an interesting thread.
To me the most expertise FBI profiler would have a hard time trying to put together the puzzle about what went thru the mind of a VX'er when he choose to get his hands on it. It's difficult to say though.
I believe the word "GO FURTHER" has to do a lot with it,I mean, that's what I though of when i saw the VX for the 1rst time ever,it caused an psicologcal disturbance in our minds, that's probably why your wife told you we're all crazy.....yeah,I agree with her.
The funniest VX "moment" I can recall of was with my girl friend; She were in venezuela when i bought the VX,at home I sent her few pics of the truck thru my cell to her laptop, after she opened she called me asking the common question: Que carajo es eso ? English translate: WTH is that? I told her: Vehicross honey, her replay:Te volvistes loco;English translate: Are you crazy ? That thing looks weird My replay: probably i just went further LOL
The day i went to pick her up @ the airport & we walked out the exit gate my girl saw the THING out there awaiting for her to drive home she spinned around the "THING" & asked me : This thing comes with a helmet & oxigen gas mask, right? I told her: hey! Now you sounds weird though. She show me her nice smile,a quick wink & wisper : I love it.

Now,is deffinetly certain that driving a VX doesn't has nothing to do with your annual income, your educational degree,if you are single, divorced, live in US or australia, you're in NSA relationship or your wife just caught you chatting over the internet with your ex,if you collect playboy magazines,if you stil live with parents & got married 5 years ago or whatever comes into your mind.

So the FBI got lot of work to figured out a VX'er profile

My quote to the thread is VX is :

Mam....Dad....I don't want to be like you.......I want to drive a VX

haha i fit most of the descriptions listed here..

23 (got it when i was 20 though) white(ish) male.. active (camping 2-3 times a year, hiking, getting into triathlons).. enjoy the attention.. obsessive about the VX

i would also tend to think most VXers could be described as "car people" i get the most comments/ praise from people who like to be around cars

Not sure where that leaves me, I'm 61, my idea of roughing it is waiting 15 minutes for room service, the only thing I like to shoot is Ta-kill-ya shots which you can tell I've had so many of I can no longer spell or say it right. But I am white:gring:

LoL X4!!!!!! I was thinkin that we all have a bit of money, anyone who is strapped for money has the wrong car. If you haven't had problems yet, then its a ticking bomb. Parts are so expensive, and hard to get, this is not the "poor" man's car, nor is it the most reliable, with all the threads I have seen about problems and the poorly located alternator, power steering and ac compressor. Not sayin its any less reliable than any other car(it does drink oil in a lot of them), but man, an older civic, sentra, camry or whatnot is for more practical.
So, Vx owners.....not too concerned with practical.

nfpgasmask
04/01/2009, 01:48 PM
I would say the VX is impractical, yes, but only not reliable if you neglect it. A well cared for Isuzu will not only last a LOOOOONG time, it will be a vehicle you can depend on.

RandyI believe this is the most common attribute, if you can consider anything common about VX owners. I don't off-road (OK, I did ONCE!), my VX is mostly mod-free (except for the PV1 and slightly larger tires), I don't camp and do "outdoors" things, I'm definitely NOT a social person, and I hate guns!

I bought a VX because it is different! But, it is also tough, great looking, and (yes) reliable! As many know, I traded in a '98 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC Collector's Edition for my VX. Being a CE, it was rare, but it still looked like thousands of other Mark VIII's on the road. It was nice, but it was kind of boring!

VX owners are all the same -- we're DIFFERENT!

I'm 42. Goth. Don't really do the outdoors. Don't own guns, nor would I want to. Since I bought it new in 2001, my VX has been very reliable. Lastly, as I have said before, this is the first group of enthusiasts I have really taken to. I would say we are UNIQUE, just like our rides. We pride ourselves on our individuality and feel compelled to make our VXes reflect that. Some mods might be more extreme than others, while some mods are popular by demand. I would agree with us all being obsessive over our VehiCROSS.

I am 22 now. Female. When I bought my first VX I was 17. I guess you can say I am half white (Irish, Polish and Puerto Rican). Guns are not really my thing. Though I have gone shooting, was pretty good too, and I enjoyed it. I just don't like hunting. I DO love the outdoors though... hiking, off roading, mountain biking, camping, watersports of all kinds... I see us all as having PASSIONATE and HIGHLY ADDICTIVE personalities... (to our rides that is).

not sure, but a few things come to mind:

Has a desire to be prepared for any situation< can drive on road , off road, through flooded areas, etc.. >
Has a high appreciation for quality engineering <hand built, well thought out>
Not only adapts to change, but enjoys it < the vx is not mainstream thinking!>
Can be unpredictable at times < theres a big hill, lets drive up it!>
Has a higher than average mechanical/spacial aptitude <yeah, i can tow your JEEP out of that mud hole, but first we need to make a strap out of these here vines!>
Sees the forest through the trees <yep, theres a big lake on the other side of that hill where the trees dissapear, that explorer might need a tow out of it> :bwgy:

Don't know if I agree with that - they built a vehicle with one cup holder but two ashtrays, a virtually inaccessible backseat, and windows that drink silicon spray almost as rapidly as the engine does gasoline. ;) But you're right, it is a sexy beast.

Btw, my $.02 on the profile is summed up by one word: independent. I think we all wanted something unique and different when we bought our VX's. I'm sure some wanted one for the attention, but I would guess that most of us just wanted to be able to find our car in the parking lot easier. :)

On that note, have you guys seen the new Audi commerical where they mock Lexus RX owners? High quality entertainment for those of us that mock status symbol / poser cars.

[QUOTE= I would guess that most of us just wanted to be able to find our car in the parking lot easier. :)

Tell me about it....
I went to this state park reservoir in long island on the 4th;I was bloody late,my friends & family were already there since 6:00 am,but the park was completely crowded by the time i got there so i was unable to find my gang, almost all of the 9 huge parking lots were occupied, only the last lot had available spots & with all the 1000's of cars i can't find those that belongs to my gang so i called one of my cousins & told her:
Shanna, look out for the strangest vehicule out there, she asked me:how it looks like ? I replay :dunno know how to explain you.
Three minutes later she called back:Gus,is that you driving a silver weird looking thing or whatever is that called on the right lane ? Yeap, that's me.
She laugh saying:Gus,you really knows how to boost an girl's attention,i mean it she added :Holy s...it's a two doors;Wow,this thing's a rolling single
& mingle advertisement;Where the hell you got that thing from ? Obviously she never saw one in north carolina where she lives & came to spend the weekend here in NYC;Anyhow i think the VX definnetly can't go unnoticed any where it goes.

I describe myself as a non-conformist with an apprciation for the rare and different. I'm 42, single, never married (came close a couple times, thank god I dodged that bullet), no kids. I have no compulsion to do the "white picket fence house with 2.5 kids and half a dog" thing. And yes I'm very much a heterosexual. Despite the non-conformist leanings, I look like Ned Flanders (Simpsons hehe...) I'm compelled to have a clean cut image for my job.

Love guns but don't own one. Beer is a staple of my diet, yet never drive intoxicated. Enjoy the outdoors esp when its cold ( i lived in Alaska for 15 years before moving to Alabama) but don't get out very much here in Alabama.

I am a IT techie by trade, "if I cant mod it, I wont buy it" is a general rule in my buying habits. I also tend to the obscure tastes in music as well as vehicles.

My other car is a fairly rare Copper colored Saturn SL2, only produced in early 97. I tinted the windows, opted for the alloy wheels, added sunroof and a decent audio system. Its still a sharp looking car that turns heads simply because of its great color scheme. When I get pulled over, the cop invariably asks "Ummm what color is this?" as he writes me up for speeding which happens way too often.

Mechanics ask me "What happened to your purple car? or Pink car? lol I never correct them that the color is Copper, cuz frankly I dont care what they think it is as long as they remember it. ;) Guess I bought the VX for much the same reason. Turn heads, be different, not care if they hate it. Dance to a different drummer, be my own person and to hell with their preconceptions of what I should do, how I should live, what my priorities should be, or what I drive.

Maybe the color of your VX says something.

First reaction to my Proton, a rare beast here in Canada, was "Starved for Attention!" If it was an Ebony I am sure the reaction would have been different.

Let's see if we can come up with personality traits by VX color.

Astral / Kaiser = conservative, if that fits a VX Owner at all?
Dragon = nature lover?
Ebony = rebel?
IronMan = ??
Fire Fox = ??
Proton = hey, look this way?

I think Kiaser just screams "Bad *** Mofo"

Protons are attention whores (no offense... but it looks like a rolling yeild sign)

Astrals I think look most conservative.

White reminds me of a fleet vehicle or a generic beer can.

Ebony is just all black... not bad but bland IMHO.

Foxfire is very sharp.... and is a great web browser. lol

And I agree that the green is for the outdoorsy typpes.

But Kiaser conservative?? No, just sharp.

Soccer fan, leave the rest of us alone. Go play your little game and don't bother us anymore with how we are supposed to love it. You all run around like idiots and react like you've been shot with a deer rifle if you get touched. Yellow card, red card oooohhh watch out I have a red card.

Whether you like the game or not, you have to admit they fall over like little girls when another player gets within touching distance.
I simply won't watch the game because of it.
Put them in a man's game and see how much talent they have.

Now, where has the missus gone - I might need to hide under her skirt 'cause some big bad soccer men will be after me.

Agree with many things covered in this thread:
1) VX owners like attention (admit it)
2) Are all ages, shapes, origins, etc.
3) Obsessive or compulsive (you probably do pay less attention to you spouse/other)
4) Active but not necessarily outdoorsmen (I don't like to sleep there either)

I would add "too much time on our hands" or insomniac or easily bored...or perhaps slightly insecure. Marlin could possibly add potentially paranoid since he takes showers and thinks about FBI profiles of him and his buddies (then of course I log on and comment about HIS delusions - that's probably worse).

I wasn't gonna get involved in this, but I have to now, I do not follow soccer, but based on your logic PK, games like Basketball, where if you touch their arm, you are in the wrong and all action stops so they can rest, and games like baseball, where no one really does any actual physical activity would be consider non-sports in your eyes.
Be careful, some close minded American may catch on to that...then you might be in big trouble. They may put on 40lbs of pads and then run into you...

Hi Marlin, not quite the right line of thought mate.
I have no trouble with people that play non contact sports - I used to play some myself along with my years in AFL (Australian football) (Not top grade I must add. LOL).
What I don't like in any sport, is people over reacting to a slight touch to get a free kick or whatever. What ever sport you play, play it like the rules intended, and don't act like a crybaby if you get bumped.
Trouble with soccer, is that the crybaby syndrome is so prevalent that from a spectators point of view, it ruins the otherwise good talent of the players.
I hope that explains my thoughts a bit better.

Oh - and bring on the big fellas with all their padding, it would be fun bouncing off all that soft stuff.
Oops, gotta hide behind the missus again.

LOL, I understand what you are saying, but man, hav eyou ever watched an NBA game, those guys fall down all the time, any way they can to push a foul.

I pretty much dislike ALL professional sports. There is not a man alive worth millions of dollars a year to do anything, least of all play a frickin game. That sends such a horrible message to our kids, "don't worry boy, you don't need an education, just hit the gym, so when you get hurt, you are completely worthless."
With that said, I played soccer for 12 years, recreationally, and I got hurt plenty of times, but from a professional aspect, those guys don't make much money when they are hurt, and that goes for all sports, so they tend to puss it up a bit. I get what you ar saying PK, but from an athleticism point of view, nothing competes with soccer. All other sports, except Rugby, those guys are just crazy, have almost as much downtime as there is game time. And only require significant thought from a few individuals. *sigh* I can't believe American Football players make millions a year...what is wrong with my country?!!
