View Full Version : 01 AC compressor part number?

So I have the typical Isuzu AC compressor problem that the bearings are howling. I ordered the 2488 compressor from autozone for a couple hundred bucks and today went to replace it. Guess what...wrong compressor. I searched every site I could, Pepboys, Isuzuparts...the VX parts list, and all the AC threads here. All the parts lists list the same compressor for the 99-01, which isn't true. The <01 used a GM compressor, which is the 2488, the 01 has some weird looking one that looks similar to the 02 and newer Isuzu compressors, but not the same, the suction connection isnt flat on the Vx like it is on 02 rodeo, axiom etc... Anyone know the part number or where to get the right one? Even the clutch assembly would be enough, but since it costs almost as much as the whole compressor, figured I would replace the entire assembly. I need to get this done before summer, and Moab, plus if the unit seizes......bad bad bad.
I checked fleabay, nothing for the 01 Vx.
Please help!!!!!!!!

I found out some interesting things today. The isuzu parts list is indeed wrong on some things. They knew about the compressor part number being incorrect. The 01 Vx AC compressor is unique to the 01Vx. The >02 isuzus use the same compressor, they have same rating and mounting but with one small but huge difference:the low suction connection on the Vx sticks out at an angle to allow the hose to not be pinched in steering components, the others are flat, so the hose has a pinch in it to get it to fit. So if you have an 01, its OEM or nothing, the clutch is the same I think, so you could try that, but for compressor failure...its gonna cost. I am keepin my old one just in case. I found a place that said they could rebuild it if you mail it to them, but its a few weeks plus shipping, so I will probably have my original rebuilt just in case. My new one came from a wrecked Vx with about 70K miles. Quality auto parts, very cool and ridiculously quick.
I hope no one else has to go through what I did...

Sorry for having steered you wrong on Fleabay. I have 2 01's so I'll note the OEM compressor or nothing data point. Thanks.

Mine is howling too. :(

Mine is howling too. :(
That sucks, its poor design, the compressor is right at the bottom and with no splash guard, it gets exposed to the elements the most. I would imagine the alternator is susceptible as well. But those are relatively cheap and easy to come by.
I wonder if you can get a shorter belt and bypass the AC if you had to like you can on the older rodeos? Hmmmmm...just a thought.

Hmmmm, something interesting, apparently the 2000 might havce the same compressor. If someone could take a look at theirs, if the clutch e-clips look like a bunch of triangles overlapping, thats the newer version, if it is just a few circles, its not. This is what mine looks like.

Are we pretty sure that this is the same compressor for '00 AND '01? I've got a chance to buy one off an '00 as a "spare", but want to make sure that it's the same. Marlin or anyone, can I get an Isuzu P/N? Thanks in advance!

The isuzu part number is incorrect. I personally do not believe it is the same, as the pics for the 00 on ebay look like the old GM compressor, which is what I got from autozone. You would have to see a pic of the pulley face. If it has a series of clips that look like some sort of keltic design, thats the one on the 01, if its just plain, its the old style.

I am checking into another rumor, that the 01 trooper has the same compressor. That is what a junk yard told me, I will know thursday for sure when I get mine out and I compare side by side.

Here is the good news. The 01 trooper AC fits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It looks different, the counter weight on the clutch is different, but it works perfect. This is the first time I have heard my Vx run without that howling sound. It purrrrrrrrs. So that should save some money and worries out there for everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marlin; During your recent compressor marathon did it appear that the '00 and the '01 are the same? My 2000 is noisy also so I will be following your footsteps. Just curios, did you have a shop charge the system after you did the installation or did you do the charging?

Marlin

The 2000 and 2001 are NOT the same. The 01 trooper is the same. I checked with autozone, they list a trooper compressor at 219, but the pic looks like the old GM compressor, which is not right. The same problem they have with the Vx. I suppose you could order one and see, you have nothing to lose except time.

Ok so will this work for the A/C Clutch?:

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Ready-Aire-A-C-Clutch/2001-Isuzu-Vehicross-4WD/_/N-jfq1pZ91sgk?counter=0&filterByKeyWord=air+conditioner+compressor&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=596436_12326_6207_

They list the same A/C clutch for the 99-01 VX and the 01 Trooper.

Did you ever send off your spare to have it rebuilt how much did that cost you?

I thought changing out my P/S pump would help a little with the noise, but not at all. Could I try just changing out the A/C Clutch? Would that help?

I would really like to just replace the A/C clutch, because I have never experienced a more consistant better working A/C than mine, but I want to make sure the one at AutoZone will work. Thanks :)

That clutch will not work!!! It doesn't look anything like ours(01 VX), your best bet would be to take it to a local AC shop and see what they think. I know the 01 VX compressor is similar to the 02 trooper (what mine came out of). It fits, just barely. I changed my power steering pump thinking the same thing, but it didn't.:(

Just to throw something else in the mix.... My comp bearing has gone too. Anyone know which one I need for a JDM 1997???

I have managed to get a shorter serpentine so I'm now running without A/C.

Marlin, If I post a pic of mine, would you be able to tell if its the same?

Cheers

Yours should be the same as the 99/00 models. Frequently on ebay for 100 bucks, also can be had at US local autoparts stores:) If you look at the front of the compressor, the 01 looks like some sort of Celtic knot. The others do not.

Seems strange for a 1997 vehicle

So I am I right in thinking I just need to find one with the same front or are there other differences? I read somewhere that two compressors can look the same but the connecting pipes are different?

I guess I need to remove it and take some more pics?!?!

Thanks for your help though - much appreciated ;)

Yep, thats what mine looks like, well at least my original, and the connecting pipes and mounts are different than the older style (non-jdm)

I just thought of something else while looking at my old one to make sure it looked like yours, I never looked at the 99-00. A guy from a parts recycler told me they were different. I was talking to him about Autozone and Pepboys all having the incorrect part number, and he told me that it was only the 01s that are different. Can someone with a 99-00 see if theirs looks like the pic above? Just look at the front, if it is like this one, then it might be the same, if the mechanic was correct, then it should be completely different, and you can get em on ebay or at any parts store.

Lets find out, the plot thickens...

I need to figure this out. If I order one from Isuzu will the compressor come with the Clutch already on there?

My A/C is now only coming on after I get the engine warm, weird huh? Is the fan somehow getting stuck/going out?

For 800 bucks, I would think it comes complete, but when I tried before, they had the same part number listed for the 01 as the 99. Which I know is incorrect.

Ok, so Isuzu has the part incorrect or Autozone had the part incorrect? You are saying if we order a new compressor from Isuzu for our year number VX they will ship us a wrong part? How are you sure of this? So Autozone, etc, AND Isuzu has this part listed incorrectly?

FYI, mine looks just like that.
So looks like we ALL have the same clutch + compressor, all the models from the 97-01, so who can get us this part? What does Merlin say about this?

No, we do not have the same part!!!! Thats why I said there is a problem in the parts number database, whichever one is used to generate all the various industry databases. I discovered this while trying to replace mine. Went to Autozone.com, put in make/model/yr, and ordered the part. Took mine all apart, low and behold the new part is a GM compressor, like the 99-00 VX uses. Mine is not, the 01 has the angled suction port, and there is no way to get the flat connection to work, we tried for an hour or so, the fittings just don' match up, short of putting in new fittings I suppose. I tried one of parts on Ebay-"99-00 Vehicross AC compressor" When I ordered it, he asked me the yr of mine, I told him 01. He wrote back saying that the 99-00 part WILL NOT FIT the 01. It is unique, and he wished be the best of luck in finding it and cancelled the part I had ordered.
I then went online to one of those junkyard parts requesters. Requested it, 200 bucks later, got one off of a 2002 trooper. Not exactly the same, but it will fit with some cursing and hammering. Its tight, but I did that in winter/spring of 2009, no problems since.
If you try to order an AC compressor from an 02 trooper at autozone, not available, hence the high cost I suppose. I did not try to call Merlin, the ZU OEM part was listed at 800 bucks or some such nonsense. Not worth it, why would I replace it with OEM junk that only made it 100K miles anyway?

Nick, mine is angled as well, I just looked at my part number on my old compressor, it too says 2440 for what its worth. Try that on Isuzuparts.com, I will try later, gotta finish my statistics and English comp homework by 10pm. :(

Any word on this? My compressor is so LOUD I can barely stand it. I can hear it over my Power Vault muffler, 33" Mudd Grapplers, and 12" sub..... It scares children every time I start it up :( And it is causing such stress on the belt that the brand new power steering pump I just put in is squeaking because it is drawing power from the belt and the belt can't handle both the bearing about to go out on the A/C and the power steering needing more power.

Marlin
10/13/2010, 09:43 AM
I would get one off of a Trooper. Not worth the risk of blowing a belt, and then frying your engine:(

So I think I am going to go with this company for a rebuild:

http://www.houstonaccompressor.com/

I have removed the belt a few times, replaced the P/S pump, but how hard will it be to get the A/C compressor loose to take it over to these guys? I already have the 80" 6 rib belt to put on and by pass the compressor while it is being rebuilt. Just wanted you guys input that have actually removed the compressor before what I should expect/run into/look for while removing the compressor, any input much appreciated :)

So this past Saturday my engine bay started smoking and I could smell burning rubber..... Turns out SOME of the noise I heard from the engine was actually the tension pulley which froze up momentarily and burnt some of my belt. I replaced that and it was a ton better, but the A/C compressor is still loud and made the power steering pump squeak, so I put the shorter belt on by passing the a/c compressor and the VX sounds quiet again. I also found 1 rebuilt compressor here in Houston at Houston A/C Compressor shop so I am having that put on, and I WILL GIVE MINE BACK TO THAT SHOP, and they will rebuild it and have it for sale at $185 (+$20 core charge). Let me know if anyone wants mine once they get done rebuilding it.

In the last couple weeks (when we have had warm days) my a/c doesnt seem as cool, -- or that it takes a while to get cool. I dont have any awful howling or sounds.

This morning as I was driving the slide indicator for temperature was almost to the very left side (coldest setting) blowing just cool air. When I slid the indicator all the way to the left, then the fan sped up blowing hard, but move it a 1/4 inch to the right the fan slows down to a trickle.

Compressor going out? Temp sensors? Eh?

sounds like it could be just the ac system needs a recharge. could also be the blower motor resistor if such a small change in controls makes a big difference on the fan

I have stockpiled all that stuff, extra alternator, ac compressor, cvs and so on. Since Isuzu is gone, it will get more and more difficult over the years.

Plot thickens. I know that the 99VX sitting in the yards in Charleston does not have the same compressor as my 01. I assumed it was a difference associated with auto climate control.

The GM compressor physically fit in the truck, but the fittings were not even close to the same. One might be able to swap all the lines and make the GM model work, which can be had for 100 bucks or less on Ebay. That might be worth the effort. I tinkered with all this at the beginning of my relationship with my VX. I wasn't as comfortable tearing into that stuff back then. If I was not in the Arabian Gulf right now, I would probably take it apart and hack out the old lines and do the swap....then I could sell my two spares and perhaps pick up a new welder with the cash :)

The date your VX left the lot. Although the actual production date would be better. IIRC you may have a sticker on the underside of your center console lid that lists the month and year of manufacture. If the compressors were changed mid-year knowing your production date might give us a better idea of when the change was made.
