How about a portable radio tuned off-station (white noise). Probably uses less juice than a fan. Besides, if it gets down into the 40s (might or might not) you might not want a fan going even if it points away from you...

FWIW I run my CPAP all night off my truck battery, no problems starting in the morning.

Because I am a bit OCD, and can't wait till May, here is what I already have to bring as far at the Vx goes:
Brand new set of extra tie rod ends (free from my mech), full size spare, and fix-a-flat, set of mecatech cv boots, Titan 3ton exhaust jack, come along, 30ft snatch rope and multiple shackles, camera and charger, I copied off of Jolly Roger and stripped out spare area, put in 5gal jerry can in mount, 10lb CO2 bottle with regulator and 15ft hose, I can fill about 44 33" tires on one fill up or run small pneumatic tools. This should be perfect for airing down and subsequently back up after trail riding. I brought emergency hose patch kit, duct tape, RTV, clear silicone, full tool set, lots of straps, 50 feet of climbing rope, first aid kit, handheld GPS with extra batteries, hose clamps, mighty putty, in case we have to tow a semi..., WD40, inverter, extra sunglasses(can't see without em, retinas burned out by fishing in Guam and being out to sea in fluorescent lights for the last 10 years).
Still need to get handheld radios and maybe a CB. I have the Taurus drink holder, but its useless, I would rather have the CB there. The under seat idea sounds cool too, not sure yet. I got a full size ammo can that will fit behind the spare on the roof for most of the small stuff. Waterproof, shock proof, and looks cool. The chemicals and CO2 will be inside.
You can imagine the camping stuff I am bringing...my wife thinks I am nuts.
Anyone recommend anything else?;)

Kenny wrote up a nice list, and I found it. We've been using it for the last two years. The problem is it will not allow me to CUT and PASTE the list.

If you look at the Moab ZuZoo XI 2008 thread, Kenny wrote it on 4/21/2008.
If that's too much trouble, hopefully Kenny will see this and repost the thread.

Peace.

Good article on being/using a spotter on the trail:
http://www.4x4wire.com/trail/technique/spotting99/

Trail Etiquette
ALWAYS One of the most common and most commonly broken rules on any trail ride is to always keep the vehicle that is behind you in your rear view mirror. In this way, the group will always be together -- if the person behind you slows down, you should slow down, and this will cause a chain reaction to the whole group. This is especially important at trail intersections. If you lose sight of the vehicle in front of you, let the driver know to slow down -- another great reason to have a CB. This in turn will work its way up to the trail leader and no one will get lost. Do not follow too closely either, especially while going downhill. When you make it up over an obstacle, you need to wait for the next vehicle in line to make it, so if a strap is needed you can assist. If those below you can't see over the top of an obstacle, let them know when it's clear at the top.

That's a pretty good list, pretty close to what I had already, and I am definitely skipping the air compressor. Too expensive, I got my 10lb CO2 setup for about 200 shipped, and I can inflate about 40-50 tires with one bottle. I just need to figure out where to mount it. I am thinkin floorboard behind driver's seat. That way the hose can reach out both doors to access all tires without taking the whole bottle out.
I am waiting on sway bar bushings, but other than that, I think I am good to go. Skid plates would be nice, but I am waiting to see how RiffRaff's deal pans out. No junk Troopers in the yards around here...booooooo.
Well, its warming up here, about 60 or so, I think I will rhino line some of my panels today. Should keep me busy for a few hours.

I was just gonna do the DIY kit. Figured a few bottles of rubbing alcohol to make sure I get all the residual chemicals off the cladding and then roll on the liner. I have access to another VX in the area, I am trying to buy it, but I can get pieces if I screw something up that bad. It took me about 3 hours to get the damned bolts off the rear tow points so I could install the hitch. Had to buy new cutting wheels for my angle cutter...not a good project, so I didn't start the liner. Also took care of most of the rust that was under the rear bottom cladding, painted my CO2 bottle with black enamel, then decided to go play in the mud, 15 minutes of mudding=1hour of cleanup, most of that being my driveway.

hey so...i was throwin some idea's around in my head today when i was bored at work..

would anyone from colorado or the area be interested in trailoring 2 VX's???

my dad has an F350- with a HUGE flatbed...the weight would definately not be a problem, he usually tows around 20k lbs....

ill check on the length of it tomorrow but we may even be able to fit 3...

i dunno, he gets around 20 MPG and it would be much cheaper to throw 2 VX's on a trailer and it would cost around $40 a piece each way (i figure 30 something gallon tank, goes almost exactly 500 miles per tank)

not a necessity but its a possibility for sure...plus we could save some tire tread ;)

p.s. I recently managed to bring my new Ironman back to life, engine repair was $6k and 2 months of work/waiting for spare parts to be delivered
But now IT LOOKS COOL! As cool as my previous (Rickster's) one did...

well...im figuring one tank of gas each way in the ford (gets around 500 miles to the tank)...around $80 per tank of gas....split two ways is $40 each way...total of $80 round trip

now look at that in my VX.... 2 tanks each way at $90 total...thats $180 vs. $80....$100 savings...plus some serious wear on $1200 tires...

just a thought...

:(OK guys, sorry about this but our plans have changed. Our motorhome lost the transmission and won't be ready for 'ZuZoo so the pot luck dinner is out for our place this year on Tuesday at Pack Creek. I am not even sure where we will be at right now but we do have options.

Todd,

Let us know where you think you lost the transmission and we'll get a group together to find it.....kidding.

I still like the idea of a pot luck dinner, so I'm sure we'll find a new place to have it. I'm sure we could do it in the Red Rock Lodge parking lot, but I'm not too sure how thrilled they would be about that.

If nothing else I would think that we could do it at the Protal under the covered area next to the check-in office. Do you have to reserve that thing? Could someone staying at the Portal check into that?

Here are a few pics of my tow rig, I will test it out this weekend for the Isuzu meet at Uhwarrie,NC. Its about 215 miles each way, so a perfect distance. I have a few things to do to the trailer, paint, new cables, electric jack, and wiring upgrades. Too bad it isn't my trailer, but if he is letting me borrow it for free, for about a month, I owe him one.

#1 Would anyone be interested in a 101 4- wheeling clinic on Monday afternoon? If so I would be happy to put one on. Detail to follow if there is enough interest.
#2 Meeting place for the VX run will be Portal along the entrance road Tuesday morning at 8:30 am leave at 9:00am
#3 Dinner will be a pot luck at the Portal pavilion starting at 5:30pm for happy hour and dinner at 6:00pm I will bring my grill and I believe there is a grill we can use there but not exactly sure. This year we will bring our own meat and we need to get a list going on side dishes.

Nah...I'm gonna push through to Denver on Saturday. It's a long day of driving (14-15 hours), but the driving across the plains isn't that taxing, and it gets me a leisurely 6-hour drove on Sunday through the Rockies, and - bottom line - an extra day in Moab...

Okay... so long time since I posted anything anywhere. Been a crazy couple years.

So anyway, it is with mixed emotions I report that I was able to fanagle a way to moab this year for visiting with a lot of yall. Unfortunately, Loco is still down, she will not be making the trip.
Needs a tranny replacement and a new axle shaft (will do both while I am in there).

But I lost my job 3/2, Tia lost hers 3/31. I picked up a contract position that could turn perm, could end at any time, I just don’t know. She is still looking and we are hopeful that things shake free soon. I am a project engineer/manager in electronics/electrical discipline (specializing in audio/visual, with experience in DC power, and telecommunications). Cant make the trip and fix the Amigo. We desperately need a change of scenery so we thought that the trip and visiting with old friends would be worth making the trip. We will head out on Thursday 5/14 after work/school, and arrive late 11p-12a is the window I am targeting. Don’t think we will hit the road until 5ish. We will return on Monday 5/18.

So looking forward to seeing everyone and chillaxin. So, we will be lookin for open seats for Tia, Kyren (15), and myself. Would like to ride along on some trails, and if not, we will chill around town or hit the parks and hike. Either way we will be havin a break from the job boards and stresses of everyday life.

Shoot me a msg and let me know if you would be willing to share a seat in your rig. We don’t all have to be in the same rig, but would like to stick together on the same trail.
I can offer my spotting expertise (far from the best, but fairly decent) :D, trail knowledge ( I have done a LOT of those trails and know them well, including some off the beaten path off shoots), and comedic relief. 8)

Like I say, I have no clue who will and wont be there this year, as I have been away for quite some time. We decided to do a road trip to Oregon last year, 4235 miles. Will bring laptop and drive to show pics. It was an awesome time. Regardless, we will have a good time.

So that’s my $5 post. I have been saving pennies for a long time.

Well, one less thing to worry about. The day before I went to Uwharrie, my VX overheated. It continued to do so the whole trip, I was running the defrost on high to keep temp below 225. Today I replaced the fan clutch, now it sounds like a semi!!!! I love it, temp, not a degree over 178, just like it should be, but boy is the VX loud now. I think my clutch has been bad for some time. Can't wait to see everyone, still lookin into the hats, but I dont think it will be before then.

I am not sure what you are driving up, pending the trail, my Expedition might be available for you to drive. I woudn't take it anywhere crazy that actually needs 4wd, but if a stock VX on bald tires can make it, a lifted Expy on 33" procomp AT extremes can. Just don't tell my wife...;) Plus it can seat like 40 people (6 actually, I put captains chairs in the middle row).

Excellent Todd. The trail sounds great.

Just make sure that if there is a tough obsticle there is enough room for you to walk next to me and hold my hand while I go through it. (I know somebody has a picture of that from last year)

Back on subject; on top of leading us through some great trails, Todd always gives a little history of the region and some of it's features as we go. So, on top of it being fun, and a bit of an adrenaline rush, you get a little trivia and education along the way.

Plus, it's just cool to see VX's stretching out in front and/or behind you.

A VX garage sale doesn't sound horrible. I have a few isuzu center caps, factory airbox and intake with K&N drop in, the factory shocks go to Tom if he brings beer;). I will bring 4 tubes of aquapel, PBkid and Bart got first dibs on those from a while back. I have been toying around with the idea of getting rid of my front plastic piece. Not sure what one of those go for, but I am looking at having Joe Darlington make me a custom bumper. Once we have my bumper made, it will be a template for others that would like a Warn type solid metal bumper with winch mount. As far as I know, there are none right now.

1 Linda and I will be at Pack Creek Campground Saturday evening and have no plans for Sunday. You can reach me at 801-631-7993. The motorhome is still disabled so we will be in a tent site just east of the restrooms.

2 I will start the 4x4 101 at noon at the Portal Pavilion on Moday with some how to's and then move somewhere close for hands on. Probably a portion of Fins and Things.

3 We have a comp in Delta Utah starting Friday morning so we are packing it up on Thursday. We wont be in Moab for the weekend.

I assume that is in Salt Lake. Kodiak and I plan on rollin out of Salt Lake around noonish or earlier. My cell is 619-869-9757(don't remind me that its a San Diego area code, I know), I already talked to Kodiak on the phone and exchanged numbers. Give me a call if you are game. I won't be in Salt Lake till midnightish probably. I am leaving Charleston on the afternoon of the 7th and heading for Dayton, Oh. That is about 12-13 hours with the trailer. Then we will hit the road sometime on the 8th and head for KC, Mo. Another 10-12 hours or so. We will probably chill on KC for a bit to sleep and get ready for the straight shot from KC to Salt Lake which will be between 18-20 hours. None since it just goes back to the atmosphere whence it came. That is different than burning fossil fuels that have been buried for millions of years and adding to the CO2 content of the atmosphere.

If you were crossing the Poplar Street Bridge into St. Louis at 1:09 PM CT today, I was 2 cars behind you. My eyes lit right up. It was raining hard and I couldn't make out the plates, but it was a Proton on trailer being hauled by a larger dark SUV. And the roof rack was absolutely jammed.

If that's not what I saw, it was a freakishly similiar rig. I wanted to get up alongside for a better look but traffic gets a little nutty in that spot. They zoomed off onto 70, while I puttered along in the 44 West lane.

Jim came over after lunch today & we tag teamed our whips into shape for Moab...:_wrench:

Hooked up my clevis & tow strap.

Put my stock VX rims & terra graps on his ride.

Got all of my fluids topped off.

Greased the driveline.

Rotated my tires.

Re-installed all the belly armor on the VX.

Fillum' up with gas, & away we go in the morning...

Everyone travel safely, & well see y'all in Moab, maybe even meet up wit'chall in Glenwood springs and/or Grand Junction...

Ldub, don't know my country, you going thru SLC?

Nope, me & Jim avoid big city traffic & steep mountain passes like the plague.

We're flatlanders, we like our grades on the mild side & our traffic, non-congested...:smilewink

We're coming down through WY.
