"You other brothers can deny".... Sorry that was my worst sir-mix-alot impression. you dont even want to see the best either.

So here is my problem I have my tires on WAHOO and had to cut a bit of the cladding up front. But have a problem with the front tires still. The rear of the wheel well is rubbing. All I an see is a bracket. My question to you "bigger tire" folks is what did u do? Take bracket off and beat with a hamer?? Or just beat with a hammer?

Where it rubs on front tire rear of the wheel well

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/DSC02061.JPG (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=10778)

A upward view of it.

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/DSC02062.JPG (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=10779)

And now the red-headed-step bracket

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/DSC02063.JPG (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=10780)

So any suggestions would be awesome. I am thinking its a simple removal of the bracket and maybe hammer a bit.

ZEUS

If I remember correctly, the bracket is spot welded to the body - I hacked mine in half with a sawzall where it turns to horizontal. Remove the inner liner and you get a great look at what can be done. I pulled the cladding away from the bracket when I started cutting to protect it. It is glued to the metal and one of those little white plastic plug things secures it to that bracket - I cut my plug off with a pair of dikes to save time, then I carefully pulled until I could wedge something between the steel and the cladding. I used my Roto-Zip to cut the liner and the cladding to shape. I sprayed bedliner stuff very thick onto the metal that is under the liner. Then I hammered the hell out of it! When I got the shape I wanted I sprayed some more to fill the seams and cover the pounded metal. I think it looks pretty clean! I'll take a pic of the finished result when i get a chance... don't hold your breath though!

Well, I had the same problem. I took a dead blow to it, it is bendable. One came out looking like that is the way it should be, the other, well, you can tell I took a dead blow to it, oops :smack::smack::smack:

Yous guys & yer fancy power tools & such...:rolleyesg

Being predominantly of the cave man persuasion, I just beat mine into submission with a two pounder, trimmed off whatever plastic that was still in the way with a tin snips, & finished with liberal applications of bed liner...it's my fender well, I don't care if it's purdy...UGHHHH!:naughty:

I wanted Terras but they wouldn't fit the AR's without lifting.
I still had to get down and dirty in there.

I had to bend back some of the front-rear wheel well (underneath the lining) and then zip-tied the lining out of the way.

Ya I had them put on to see how much tires stuck out of the wheel well with AR's I have. Lol no way it would work unless I was only going in a straight line :)

So ya lift required just didnt know how squirrely it felt driving that high up. I feel like I am floating...

That means they will send enough material to do either two, or four fender wells...I ordered the one in the top right pic...the one with the wire in the lip.
I ordered a set, not two...maybe roll was the wrong word to use...think more like coiled into a flat box.:smilewink

I didnt see anywhere, where you mentioned whether you were lifted or not (or I am simply blind). With a 9" wheel and no lift, I am VERY curious to see just how much you will be cutting. I have 18x8.5's on 285/60's with no lift and my cutting was (and still needs to be since I have a new front clip now) considerable. Whatever you do, dress it up well after you cut. I found a good metal file did a good job at really flushing it all out.

Dumke
04/10/2008, 09:11 AM
Worm I do have a lift on it.

I did the front cladding all sloppy because was in a hurry to get to the alignment shop so i have to dress it up a little nicer. But like Dub said its a wheel well who cares.. I really just need to straighten my line out that i cut.

Well I never could color in the line when I was younger lol. I was actually in a hurry in the front and instead of marking it off and taking my time bringing out a drimmel i used the ol first saw i could find in tool box method. it worked good just a little crooked. I had to hurry to get it to alignment shop before they closed.

AHHH still deciding..... Here is the deal I am going to Provo the weekend before the VX only run for a track meet with Houston Baptist University as one of their coaches. We are flying in on thursday and flying out on Sunday I believe. I have been thinking of driving up the VX but that long of a drive 40 days away from the Olympic Trials is not that great of an idea. I have thought about just staying some extra days after the meet and hanging out with everybody and then flying back later after the team has already come back, but I know I will hate not having my VX. So I am still up in the air about everything.....

Well after worrying I just said screw it and cut basically what you did. Hammered the hell out of it but not muchjust kindda shaping and making sure no sharpedges really. I did have to cut a bit of the wheel well liner but eh no biggie no going back now. Rubs a small bit but only a few minor things let to trim. The front of the rear looks like it may need some work. i am worries about the rub when I goto moab so we shall see. I will flex it later to see where it rubs and make adjustments there.

And thanks. I cant tell you how many more people have stoped me and look and flag me down before I get back in my truck to ask what it is. The thing is made to be lifted, doesnt look right without it. I am very happy with outcome. lol so far anyways a few tweeks on the suspinsion to get the water bed feeling out of it when driving down the hwy.

I couldn't agree more. Stance is everything! And the VX still handles really well with a lift. If I ever get a second VX it will be the dark silver with gray interior. Those wheels of yours look so good with that color... I could see me copying your setup but with the fantasy SAS and 35's.

I'm with you...I tried the "middle of the road" approach for a while with 265/70's... because I had all the same concerns that Bart has...didn't want to lose cornering, didn't want to lose mileage, etc., etc.

was on previous page :p no worries i dont mind talking about em.
1.)rims are AR Thugs 18x9 6x5.5
2.)Tires are Grapplers 285/65/18
3.) Pfft i dont mind that way you can say wow nice price or point and laugh because paid too much. Price, well I got them from 4 wheel parts next to the house, was thier march sale. Got the online price I think outthe door was almost 2400. I forget exact price if you want to know will have to wait till I get home to look at invoice. But keep in mind that price is for 5 rims and tires... ya I didnt want to have a odd ball rim so I ponied up and bought 5. Course the sale was 25 % off so basically got the 5th wheel free. The tires were free shipping but probably could have gotten that anyways buying from store so not a deal. That price was for 5 tires and rims, wheel locks and to mount and balance tires. That doesnt include center caps as they cost me a extra 24 bucks because they have to spray teflon on them. I will have to get those this weekend.

Day pictures will be posted when I get home today.

As for the rest of you thanks I am super happy with them and the look even tho I scratched near the lug nut on one of the rims but oh well its only noticable to the user right??

Dub those are not X-HD... They are just the HD ones. I bought Indy4X premium lift kit. Not sure what difference is exactly I know they both look a little different. indy4x premium lift kit. You can do it cheaper but figured I had money burning a whole so may as well go heavy duty parts on some other things if your gonna do it. But can do it waaay cheaper than I did it but you may have parts break down the road which I didnt want. I dont have exact link as they have already changed thier website. Pay no attention to the rest of the random doodling...I found out I could make a circle & just went a little nuts.:rolleyesg

Yup you are. Nut goes toward rear tire and that silver peivce is shiney part so its as tight as it can be. When I got it aligned dude tightened it but yes I am going over every part b4 moab make sure all nuts and bolts are tightened even tho the ones in my head are not.

lmfao ya gotta love the extra doodling. Hey look a chicken... :bwgy::bgwo::bgwb::laughing:

When ya think jodhpur, ya gotta think of the trou worn by the patrolmen in me, myself, & Irene.:smilewink

Also, I wouldn't get too excited about center caps before Moab...center caps are considered a light snack by most of the trailside rocks.:naughty:

Oh no i went last yr just not all week. If they get stratched they get scratched its all part of it. Cant be a sissy about it. It will suck but they can be repainted or will just have scratches. I am not going to go balls to the wall beating the piss outta them. But on teh flip side I am not going to pamper them and leave the truck in the Mc deez parking lot either

ok, so im getting ready to buy my tires and rims....so im basing my spacing and width off of yours, except im going with 16 inch rims, so if i tell them i need 16x9 6x5.5 and 31 inch tires i should be good????
sorry, the guys at the tire shops are freakin idiots and cant figure out what im looking for, so maybe if i bring them in some numbers they can figure it out.
does the 16x9 6x5.5 include offset???? that seems to be the hardest part to figure out.....

Ok now for you pbkid. I basically looked at what Bart had on his set up to see what would fit on mine. Which if I am not mistaken or maybe he can chim in or do search for his chamber rims. I think is was 6x4.4 maybe??? So I basically just used the search function and looked at who was running what and also looked at thier pictures to see how much it stuck out and got my solution from there. If you can get them to be nice enough to try a few different combos then that will work as well. I just got lucky on the first try but it was a try on first to see if it work, even tho I had already paid so I could have gone different ways. My numbers I am running are in the above post, so look in my gallery and that is how much they stick out of wheel well. I would say maybe 1.5 inches maybe a little more. I am going dub route because even tho legal to stick out in Texas its not legal everywhere.

Lasly because i think i just wrote a novel there. I would go else where to find someone that does know. There are sites out there that should tell you and let you play with options to see what fits.

ok, well i know that i want 16x9...and i know the bolt pattern, i just need to figure out what type of offset to tell the shop who is ordering them. they said it was +25 offset stock so i dont know if that means i need +27 or +23 to get 2 inches of offset outward to fit wider tires under there...
