View Full Version : VX Audio Build : revised...

biju

fam,

for those interested - i had to have the moderators delete my original audio build thread. i received a few vague threats via my personal email - and to protect myself from theft/unwanted interest i decided to no longer actively post such detailed information about my build.

i'm fairly positive it wasn't from a fam member here. rather some lurkers/passerbys who found it surfing from another forum site (I link to vx.info in my signature on a lot of other forums).

instead - i'll just share a few general pics of the build along the way, and also when totally finished.

take care all.

well that sucks

not that you had the thread deleted but what happened. Of course if someone did rip you off they could open a corner audio store with all the stuff you had.

meh. no worries. this has happened before during a previous build, and i just ignored it. this time's a little different tho...

wow thats really too bad...interesting that someone would threaten you
you think if u wanted to steal something you wouldnt let the person know in advance...interesting
anyhow, thats too bad bij
excited to come check out what you come up with..

biju
03/27/2007, 09:58 AM
i've done my own 'sluething' to follow-up... you know... to make things fair. :p ;) :p

consider my use of the word 'threats' lightly. more like indications of interest by folks who came across as having less than honorable intentions.

excerpts:
"nice equip. i could use some of that. westminister's not too far from me..."
"...nothing in your security that someone couldn't get past."

just feel it's best not to put it so 'out there' (the innards, the hows, the gritty details, etc...) lots of jealous buggers out there...

fret not. it will be a pretty darn tootin' scallywag of a build. i'll post plenty of after build (general) install pix when done.

biju, this is what happens when you build such a bad-*** system. maybe you better throw in some pyle coaxials to tame it down a bit. :p

sweet freaking subs doood. who dare step up and challenge me with those subs??!! anybody?? thought so. bwahahahahaa....

costie: no worries fellow vx'er. sometimes the few ruin it for the many - nothing new really. i promise to share the end result. just not going to share the way in which everything is installed like i wanted to... just too risky given the attention it generates. besides, if one of these dinks *really* wanted my equipment they'd only have to look to the public tread to see how it was installed - which provides a blueprint on how to uninstall it. (which is something i really didn't worry/think about before this). does that make sense?

But for opinion sake I woulda liked it more if the DDC units face was flush to the face of the pod.

Otherwise It still looks good!

thanks knight!

i too would have preferred it flush, but needed a way to grab it. see, it's detachable - which will allow me to use it not only from the ceiling of the vx, but in my lap - or outside the window if need be at shows....

progress is being made indeed. security was *just* finished on sunday (yes, it took that long...) i added some last minute 'goodies' as a result of my newly found paranoia.

now that that's in and completely functional i might feel a little safer providing some pix here and there until she's done done. we'll see...

switched up the connection system. newest battery terminals & anl fuse holders from jl (much better design on these than the old systems):

150amp h/o alt showing connection terminal to pos. post:

http://www.bijulab.com/images/VX_INFO/newalt.jpg

along with the new alt i'm also doing the big three (3) with 2/0ga power/ground. :p

once the alts in i'll have all wires ran - and will be ready to move on to enclosure fabrication. this include the doors, kick panels, and sub enclosure.

(let me tell ya... getting 3 runs of beefy 12ga wire run through the door boots was no small feat by any stretch of the imagination.)

sooooo much to do yet. :( :(

lots of progress made, yet so far to go. the details... so many details.

what you see at the bottom of pic #2 is a plexi window (1" thick plexi!). Inside enclosure will be red lighting controlled by an OEM fog switch. boxes are shown with a test fit for the subs.

DONE:

the big 3
h/o alternator
sound proofing
rca's run
speaker cable run
security system
neon cables run
head unit
bbe processor
oem fog switches for neon
firewall grommets
2/0ga power ground run
sub enclosures
custom battery tray
custom xover/eq mount
custom ddc controller mount
front tweets
front mids
front midbass

every single item above has been a battle. consumed more time than it should have. and required several trips to the store (hardware, etc.) eventho i tried to have everything already handy.

i refuse to do a shoddy job, or throw stuff together - which has made this incredibly difficult for me. the details are enough to drive me mad, but nothing a few xanax won't help. details, details, details... every step of the way.

what's left is the custom amp rack, wiring (hooking components up), and final beauty (cover/vinyl) boards in some areas... i have 13 days left to make this puppy work before moab. we'll see....

-biju.

(p.s. - i purchased equip to provide rear fill mids/tweets/midbass. at this time i'm wiring it up, but won't have time to do the custom work to complete the rear fill before zu. that phase i'll tackle after moab. essentially, to make this work something had to give. rear fill got the chop. for now...)

i figure this project is 85% finished - still have the rear fill to fabricate in the ceiling, and midbass kickpanels. i'm burned out on the project tho - and need to step away for a while (my wallet will appreciate it too). i'll pick it up again this winter maybe.

for now - it does sound good. and that's all i was really going for. sound quality.

just a question' why did you decide to face them up? also what did you meter at?
why not? ha!

mostly because it's a SQ set-up and didn't want the subs to overpower everything by having them pound directly into my back or right behind my ears...

the meter numbers? ;puke2; i haven't metered it. i won't meter it. i have no interest in the SPL numbers - more interested in the frequency peaks/valleys and the imaging of the front stage for overall sound quality. (i'm more old school that way...) don't get me wrong... i'm sure it would 'meter' well. i mean, they're two resonant engineering 12" MX's with a solid supply of power!

(sipping beer...)

at one point i was even thinking about putting the subs in an acoustic suspension enclosure to maximize SQ - but didn't have the mono power from the M2 to feed em' what they'd need in that type of environment (less efficient enclosure). In the end, I went with the bass reflex enclosure for more efficiency, but again, didn't want em' pounding directly into my back/ears so up they went!

besides, i had *really* good results from my two mtx 10's in two decware deathbox's that had ports firing up (granted different enclosure, etc., etc...)...

(sipping more beer...)

the spl craze is sad to me. Just my view. There's more to music than trying to figure out how much money you can spend to loose your hearing in the shortest amount of time...

i dunno. i need another beer... ha!

I'm pretty new to this forum. I think its a great thing and im glad I found it. I am on here to make friends . that being said....

thats ok that you have no interest in spl. dont really care. like i said before just a question. as far as firing the subs up ive had more luck firing them back with a vented enclosure, in my vx. i seem to get cleaner, tighter, bass. of course after adding a few rolls of dynamat. (i know, different subs amps boxes etc)hence the question. anyways why mx's for sq and it seems that the dd amps are made for spl. 1% thd??

Im not hating on your system, its a fantastic install, with good componets. just conversation.

how did i miss this reply?

koala,

big part of my involvement in mobile audio is from a hobbyist perspective - or 'daily driver' - with sq in mind as the overall goal. (altho the thought of competing does peek my curiosity!)

my definition of being a hobbyist is exploring, testing and taking chances on brands that interest me - and the only way to entertain that curiosity is to dive in and give em' a try. once that's done - i'm able to form opinions on the equipment - and refine as necessary (to my liking).

thus the choice of the dd amps.

now the re mx's?... sexy, eh? i had the opportunity to hear them in a (optimum volume) acoustic suspension enclosure. i was sold. so i figured i'd give em' a try, and i did! loved them in the vx, but not so much with the ported enclosure i built. (read above for why i decided to go ported if you're wondering...) that's why they went to a new home.

i saw another post from ya where you ask 'what's next'? well, i usually am not one to spout off about 'i'm going to' or 'eventually i'll have' or 'i plan on' getting this equip or that equip. (in other words - i usually wait until i have it and *then* post about it.) however, i think i have enough past history where folks know i'm not just a schit talker - so i'll share some of what i'm *thinking*...

* improved signal quality
* more efficiency
* better imaging
* improved damping/slew rate
* less 'boom' - more tight, low, clean bass

some products i'm researching right now to help me achieve that: zapco, fi, sundown, jl, us amps

not that those are the only ones in the running. they're just the ones i'm doing research on currently. we'll see. i have a long way to go.

i love this stuff.

i did some stuff with ddaudio back when i was competing. i had a 255 sq" port! with an 8 cu ft box! for one of their 9515's. i was hitting 152dbs with 2000 watts. to my amasement the sound quality was there. they have a new z series sub you should check out.
